No stadium here as they opted for a 4,000 seat arena (about as intimate as they can get here without going to a smaller auditorium where I'd be getting a mortgage to pay for the tickets). The concert has only been lightly promoted so far so I lucked out: centre stage, six rows back! I have no idea what they'll be playing. Probably the commercial stuff like 'Take Me Away,' 'Godzilla,' and 'Don't fear The Reaper.'

*lol* Geezer, I've got the lamest of all cop-outs: I just never think too! I vote when I can but to be honest with every thread in the forum be stickied, I can't keep track of what I've already participated in or not. I was one of the votes for Iron Maiden in the last poll. And early onset senility strikes because I just voted in the new poll for... damn, it was either Van Halen or Aerosmith. Maybe I'll throw together some nominees for the 90's.

Woo-hoo, Sex Pistols have 3 votes first. Very Happy

Excuse my ignorance, but what does a 'sticky' post mean anyway? Embarassed

That's right frendo you did, just missed them while I was reading over it. Would have still only been 2 votes which wouldn't have been enough for the runoff, so you're right, it wouldn't really have mattered.

It's ok Roodey, they probably wouldn't have gotten in anyway with the lack of support.

And a Sticky post is one that you never have to bump. It will always stay on top of all other non-stickied posts.

The Sex Pistols move on. Only two spots left!

Edit: I've decided that since Donte is a good guy, and he went through the trouble of putting together his list. I will add his votes to the bands that made the tournament prior to the runoff, which will improve their seeding for some. It's about all I can do for ya Donte.

God Damn it. I've never even heard of the Specials and they move on over Aerosmith, Van Halen and Tom Petty. Oh well. One more to go. I will put up the final poll. When that is concluded, Nominations for 1986-present day will be open.

I think I'm pretty educated when it comes to music Surfer. I just think that some of the bands that have made it on here are a little obscure. But I guess the voters feel they are one of the 16 best bands of the era, so they must be allowed in.

At least I know who The Stooges are study

Don't worry Geez, I was only playing with you. Heck I'm sure there are a lot of US bands I haven't heard of that you love. But regarding the poll, I'd say there are quite a few die hard music fans on here and if you compile all us geeks into one room you are gonna end up with the more obscure acts finding prominence ahead of the more commercial bands. In fact, I'll say right now, I doubt The Beatles will win this thing, even though they are widely seen as the greatest band ever.

And Donte, what you told me about Geez's mum was in the strictest confidence. I'll never let out anything about ...[blanked to avoid a severe beating]

If the Beatles don't win, I will be perfectly ok with that. Personally I consider them the second best. I put them behind only Nirvana, who I hope unleashes a righteous ass-whooping on the next era. I would like to see them matched-up in the finals. But I doubt it. They are putting a serious hurting on Marvin Gaye though.

P.S. Since there are far fewer choices this time around, I am leaving this poll up until it gets at least 10 votes.

Dinosaur Jr. is from Amherst Mass. Which is about 15 minutes from my home. When My dad was in a band he actually knew the members of Dinosaur Jr. a band that he opened for toured with them quite a few times.

i caught Dinosaur Jr. play with Dead Meadow a few years back.. great stuff, but dead meadow's set blew them away.. anyway, here goes

1986 - Present Day
(i noted any directly associated acts that deserve recognition. in other words, i saved space by not adding redundant acts. eg. nominating the beatles, john lennon, george harrison, AND paul mccartney for the 65-75 era)

The Pixies (1987) - frank black, the breeders
Soundgarden (1988) - chris cornell, audioslave
Nine Inch Nails (1989)
Ween (1990) - the moistboyz
Primus (1990) - les claypool, oysterhead, sausage, flying frog brigade
Blind Melon (1992)
Keziah Jones (1993)
The Toadies (1995)
Gov't Mule (1995)
Elf Power (1995)
Mike Patton (1996) - faith no more, peeping tom, mr. bungle, lovage, fantomas
The White Stripes (1999) - the raconteurs
The Warlocks (2001) - the brian jonestown massacre
The Sound of Urchin (2002)
The Redwalls (2003)
Black Mountain (2005) - pink mountaintops, lightning dust, blood meridian
Dan the Automator (2006) - lovage, handsome boy modeling school, peeping tom, dr. octagon, gorillaz, deltron, everything else you've ever heard

Surfer I kinda just have to ask, when you are in a discussion of the absolute greatest artists in the history of rock and roll, you truly feel that it would be a tragedy if any one of the bands you posted would not be mentioned? Or did you just want to get some names up there that you like, and not too many people may know, so you decided to try and get their names out?

All I'm saying is, we're talking about the best of the best, the cream of the crop, and you throw 50 bands at me at the drop of a hat. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, I left you open to do that. But, I just can't believe that you think every one of those bands is potentially deserving of the title "Greatest in the history of Rock."

For Example, The Silversun Pickups have released a mere one album and you have them listed here. How can you defend a small indie band who has released one album and has had only one song that 95% of the earth's population has ever heard (if they have even heard that), as being a contender for the Best Rock Band of all time?

I've heard of probably 25% of the bands you listed. And I know that being popular does not make someone good, not by any stretch of the imagination. But when you are discussing the all-time greats, you have to get some kind of recognition. I hate to be hard on you, but To put bands like Silversun Pickups, Arcade Fire, the Killers (all of whom I actually really like) and Interpol (who I can't stand) all on the same level as Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden and the Smashing Pumpkins, is a little silly, in my most humble of opinions.

That said. This will be very interesting to see who actually does make the poll. Lets see how the rest of the voters go. Don't let anything I've just said persuade you, list whoever you want, as many as you want, and I'll sort it out. I was just voicing my opinion.

i'm torn by my hatred for Billy Corgan and my fondness for the pumpkins' music from the early 90s--though, to be honest, nostalgia plays a part in that.. i found Melon Collie & the Infinite Sadness slightly more profound as a 12-year-old than i do now..

edit: hey, my post-count has surpassed my age.. i'm sure that's SOME kind of milestone

NSpan, do you really think that the Breeders should go under the Pixies? I know Kim Deal was in both bands, but her songwriting was scarcely used during the Pixies era, due to Frank Black. Him I can see under the Pixies, the way I kind of figured the Amps were under the Breeders, but I'm not sure I see the other to be similar enough. Kind of feel the same about Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, but I see your point. Good list. Glad to see someone else bought the Lovage album.

Oh, and Geez, while I can see a point to your post, I would say that Arcade Fire is definitely up to the level of Rage, Chilis, Soundgarden, and maybe Pumpkins. They've had two albums and one E.P., which isn't too far removed from the number of Rage albums released. They don't hold a candle to Nirvana, however.

even though Frank Black (Black Francis, whatever) definitely dominated the Pixies--especially towards the end--i think Kim was a critical factor.. particularly in their live show, i don't think fans would've accepted a Deal-less pixies.. and, anyway, there was that brief period where they actually functioned as a band..

interesting sidenote #1: famous Pixies-producer Steve Albini produced the breeders' debut
interesting sidenote #2: pixies drummer David Lovering went on tour with the Breeders...as their opener

(you'll notice i left out the Martinis..)
