Here is the bracket for the completed 1976-1985 era

1 The Clash
vs.
16 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

8 Joy Division
vs.
9 U2

4 Metallica
vs.
13 Iron Maiden

5 AC/DC
vs.
12 Bruce Springsteen

2 The Ramones
vs.
15. The Specials

7 Talking Heads
vs.
10 Devo

3 The Smiths
vs.
14 The Sex Pistols

6 Prince
vs.
11 The Violent Femmes

Some very interesting match-ups. Especially Metallica vs. Iron Maiden. I personally hope Maiden pulls the upset.

Tom Petty had the unfortunate task of matching up with The Clash, I think the 3 votes he managed to get are impressive.

Terrific match-up now between Joy Division and U2. Obviously U2 is more popular, but will the Joy Division fanboys drive them to a win?

While this isn't an attempt to claim Joy Division are better than U2 (even though they are!), Bono has often said JD were an inspiration for him and the band. In fact, he said a JD gig he attended was the best gig he's ever seen. And, Bono got Martin Hannett (JD's revolutionary producer) to record a few songs for them, back in the start of U2's career.

U2 takes down Joy Division (thank the rock gods!). Wasn't even as close as I expected.

My favorite match-up of this bracket up next: Metallica vs. Iron Maiden.

Metallica for me. I've got a couple of their albums but I won't even listen to an Iron Maiden song if I have any say in the matter. I would run to the hills to avoid it.
Bugger about Joy Division. U2 are alright but they have their ups and downs. some songs I adore, some that are just so-so, and some that are rubbish.

I like yours even better than mine. Very quick of you too Buscemi! There's a pretty amusing series of 'inappropriate soundtracks' as well. Listened to the '300' one yet?

I haven't seen the 300 one yet. Another couple of my favorites are Return Of The Jedi (Lucas should have used this for the Special Edition) and The Matrix Revolutions (bad movie, great episode).

I've just gone through them all. Best one is probably 'No Country for Old Men' (I have a demented sense of humour) and 'The Godfather' one plays to my sense of humour as well. Bronze medal to 'Starship Troopers.' Excellent use of Devo. And that, my friend, is a phrase no man ever thought they would utter, *lol* Razz

It saddens me, but Metallica holds off the challenge by Maiden to advance to round 2.

AC/DC squares off against the Boss in the next poll. I think it should be another fairly close vote.

AC/DC takes it down without much of a challenge.

Up next, The Ramones look to remove The Specials from contention.

The next poll is going to be hard. The Smiths vs The Sex Pistols. 2 totally different styles, one technically proficient, one not. One poetically lyrical the other blunt angry lyrics (but both with a sense of humour to their lyrics). That makes it seem easy BUT they both had a major influence on me and the musical landscape of the time, and I still listen to both of them today. AT this stage I honestly don't know who I'll choose. confused

Yeah, definitely The Smiths. The Pistols had one very good album, The Smiths produced countless and were one of the biggest musical inspirations I had growing up.

Couldn't agree more- I can't help but feel that the Pistols were more punk pin-ups than an actual band. Their music never grabbed me like The Clash or the Ramones did. I think PIL were far better than the Pistols. So The Smiths will be getting my vote.

Smiths no questoin about it. As stated earlier, the Pistols were just a concoction of McLaren basically to help sell clothes in his shop. It was more a circus act than a musical one, and while that first album was a killer, it turns out that that's all they had in them.

As for The Smiths, Johnny Marr is one of the best guitarists of the 80's, and Morrissey's lyrics resounded with a whole generation of pre-Nirvana disaffected youths.
