Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
My argument can be summed up in this wonderful video, as provided by mfrendo.
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1910892
and I'll quote myself about my explanation of the similarities between the ice planet sequences:
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1910892
and I'll quote myself about my explanation of the similarities between the ice planet sequences:
Things they had in common:
Main character alone in a desolate wasteland
That wasteland being covered with ice
That character being attacked by a large, vicious space creature.
That character entering a cave.
That character seeing a wise, older man who tells him his next move
All we needed was a Taunton to ride on and it would have been complete. No, they are not shot for shot the same, yes, they have so many similar elements that saying they had just one thing in common is moronic. I am only referring to the Luke riding out into the snow alone portion of Hoth, not the entire damn Hoth sequence with the battles and everything.
Oh and another thing, nice touch with the Spock/C-3PO odds of success rate thing there at the end. Damn they were similar...

People, please tell Geezer that Star Trek is not a ripoff of The Empire Strikes Back just because of that one sequence.

Dude, really, I think it is way more of a rip off of A New Hope, but you don't listen to arguments, you just spout off your own bullshit opinion. That's the only sequence that they took from Empire, the rest of it was generally A New Hope. Did you even watch the video?
Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
But your whole opinion is based on the scene on the ice planet. You can't say that a movie is a total ripoff of another movie based on a single scene.
For example, Quentin Tarantino referenced the dance moves from the 1960's Batman movie and The Aristocats for the twist contest scene in Pulp Fiction. But no one calls Pulp Fiction a ripoff of those two movies because of that one scene. You know why? Because people actually don't dwell on that one scene!

No... my whole opinion is not based on one scene, you just assume that it is because you don't fucking listen. I only brought up an explanation of that scene because it is the only scene you challenged, and it is the only blatant rip off scene that was not mentioned in the video, that does an outstanding job of presenting the same argument that I would make, only its funnier.
You are the one dwelling on one scene, I am talking about the whole story and how it is really similar to the storyline that a New Hope followed. Which is wonderfully explained in the video. Which you haven't once tried to dispute, because you'd come off looking like a dumbass. Do you even think before you type? Or ever have any sort of facts for your arguments? Or do you just take one aspect of what someone says, disagree with it, and hammer them with your dumbass opinion?

And Geezer, the video has no basis. That is the plot to every sci-fi movie ever made.

But.... There's no way in Hell George Lucas could have taken anything from the original Star Trek series when writing Star Wars?

I dont think that Star Trek was a rip off of Star Wars in any way. They are both great and i stand by that Star Trek is the best film of 09 so far.

Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that isn't the plot to EVERY SCI FI MOVIE EVER MADE. But if you say it, it must be right, eh Buscemi.
Lucas may have been inspired by elements of star trek, but there was a distinct difference between the two. Why do you think so many people who loved Star Wars hated the Star Trek series. I know I was one of them. Star Wars focused very much on the space aspect and their own world and their fans were so hardcore involved in that universe. Star Wars was always more of the "everyman's" sci fi films and focused more on stories and characters than alien species and space terminology. This new version of Star Trek struck such a cord with the masses because it was very like the Star Wars movies, and a lot less like other Star Trek movies.
But the point I was trying to make is to counter Buscemi's point of saying that people don't like blatant rip offs. I was trying to be humorous, but also with a point I believe to be true. My real argument to counter his point would be that people like what people like. They will go see regurgitated films again and again if it is what appeals to them. I Am Legend made a ton of money, so a film that is very similar to that will probably also be successful, so long as it doesn't look terrible. Hell, most movies out there today are at least rip-offs in some ways. Buscemi seems to think that because he doesn't like regurgitated film ideas, then everyone will agree with him. As we all know, he loves to present his ideas as facts without anything to back them up. I was trying to make the counter argument, not go into a long detailed argument about the genius of JJ Abrams Star Trek reboot.
Tranny, have you watched the video? You are usually a pretty reasonable guy. If you can watch that and still not say that it was a rip off "in any way," I may have misjudged you grasshopper.

Shryke, how do you imbed the videos so big?
Uh... Viagra?
No, I just fiddle with the embed codes that come on YouTube. You can change the size, the color, the border, whatever.
Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
Okay, let's get back to the basics.
Here were the trailers that I saw before District 9:
The Final Destination
Legion (shorter green-band version)
9
Zombieland (red band)
Jennifer's Body (an even shorter version of the previous green band trailer)
The green band version of the Legion trailer is not as good as the red band trailer but it still gets the job done. At least the green band does make mention of the longer red band trailer at the very end.
The red band trailer for Zombieland is a lot better than the green band teaser. It explains the plot a lot better and puts more emphasis on the comedy. The trailer got a good reaction from the audience.
Jennifer's Body still looks like shit. They dropped the really bad CGI shots but kept the worst line in the previous trailer (the one about gym class). Oh wait, they are all pretty bad lines. The trailer got the audience talking after it ended but it seemed like mixed word at best.

Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
Who cares if it's somewhat like a Star Wars movie? 99% of everything that comes out is based on something else or has taken elements from something else or has mixed elements from two seperate original things. If it's good, it's good.

I never said it was a BAD thing. Absolutely not! It was the only Star Trek I ever actually liked for this very reason!
Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
Trailers shown before my showing of Ponyo:
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Planet 51
The Princess and The Frog
Where The Wild Things Are (new trailer)
Toy Story Double Feature
The best reactions came from Planet 51, Where The Wild Things Are and the Toy Story Double Feature.
The new Where The Wild Things Are trailer actually makes the film look good. It no longer looks like a $75 million pretentious exercise but a classic book coming to life. It may be too different for some audiences but I think I'll enjoy it.

When In Rome:
Same old same old.
Gentlemen Broncos:
Is this guy ever going to make a movie that isn't just a re-imagining of ND?
Motherhood:
This could be interesting.

Nacho Libre wasn't a reimagining of Napoleon Dynamite. In fact, that was quite the opposite of Napoleon Dynamite.

Oh please. It had an awkward lead, with awkward humour, and an awkward Mexican sidekick. Sure, the story might have been different, but the characters were exactly the same. Same thing with GB, if you look at that trailer, it's basically the same characters in a different movie. He needs to do something different.
Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
Ignacio and Napoleon were nothing alike. Ignacio actually had ambitions and a reason for living. Napoleon was just there and had nothing to prove.

I haven't seen Napoleon Dynamite or Nacho Libre nor do I care to, so I'm pretty sure I'll be passing on whatever the hell Gentleman Bronco is.

When In Rome looks like more stupid rom-com crap. 2009 has been a good year for rom-com's, looks like 2010 is back to the same old shit.

Re: The Official New Trailers Thread
Sam Rockwell, the dude from Flight of the Conchords and the writer of ND in a retardedly hilarious movie about writers. I am FUCKING THERE! LOL Looks awesome.
Motherhood doesn't look bad ("Baby Klansmen outfit" hahaha)
Didn't even bother with the rom-com.

It looks ok, but i find it very underwhelming after all the hype, but i guess it was meant to be seen in 3D.

the trailer looks pretty cool but it reminds me alot of a live action battle for terra. Is it possible to have a live action movie with more CGI than its animated counterpart?
