You would think that the trekkies would be hoping for it to appeal to a wider audience. If it is popular, then it's more profitable and in turn more star trek movies for the trekkies... everyone wins

That just isn't how things work though is it. I mean, I suppose all my favourite little bands should become huge so that they can continue to release albums, but the snob in me hopes that I will forever remain in the minority of those who know them. The same for Trekkies. They have their own little world in which they are obsessed and don't wanna see it become diluted by the general public.
I myself am not really a Trek fan, I watch Next Generation and DS9 a long time ago, but I've never really been into them. Too much questing and not enough lightsabers. I've seen a few of the movies and didn't really do anything for me. This one looks fantastic though.
And I know for certain that Bouushh does not like Spider-Man. But then there isn't that much he does like....

I will disown anybody who doesn't like Spider-Man. You are not a well person...
I was mainly talking about the comic fanboys concerning Spider-Man however. We all know certain comic fans hated Daredevil or Ghost Rider, etc, but Spider-Man was universally well liked.
And Busci doesn't count as he is the youngest grumpy old man I know. And that is including me. He is both younger and grumpier than me.

Re: what are you watching RIGHT NOW.... or somewheres about close to "right now"
That is largely correct. All my comic friends love Spider-Man, especially Spidey 2. Spidey 3 is a bit of a sore point, for me included, but I blame the studio for that and have complete faith in Raimi for the fourth now he has total control. I think most fans are of the same opinion.
And you are not grumpy, Donte. Slightly perverse but never grumpy. You're like the old guy out of Family Guy....

I was actually really into spiderman comics when the movie came out and i ended up walking out, but I will admit it was not neccesarily the movie itself as it was the shitty unbelievable CGI...I have since seen it a whole bunch of times and have grown to love its pure Sam Raimi-ness!

Watched a Disney twofer yesterday. Aladdin and Hercules. Both are still fantastic. I was very surprised at how well they have held up, and despite the fact that the last time i watched them i was a kid, they were both still great films.
Great soundtracks too.

Two of my least favourite Disneys. We recently bought The Aristocats, Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty, all of which I find far superior to those two. Sleeping Beauty especially is outstanding.
Last night we watched Eyes Without A Face, a french movie from 1959 about a scientist who experiments with reconstructing his daughter's face using the faces of other pretty young girls. Some of the scenes are kind of like Face/Off but much better. Pretty shocking considering its age, and very fascinating. Some of the scenes are very brutal.

I hated the direction they went with Spider-Man 2. I hated Spider-Man 3 completely (especially the way they turned Gwen Stacey into a pointless foil).
I still think that should reboot the series and follow the comic books more closely. Start in the 1960's, Peter Parker as a child and the death of his parents. Enter his high school days, his first love and first friends and the beginning of Spider-Man. Go to his college days and adulthood, enter Gwen Stacey. Go to Gwen Stacey's death and finally bring in Mary Jane Watson. Enter the 1980's and Spider-Man's battle with oneself and age. End the action in 1987, with Spider-Man's wedding and his retirement from the trade.
If a sequel is needed, go to modern-day where Spider-Man must return to the trade after Manhattan goes to hell. Team him up with his daughter and together form a team of superhero vigilantes. Spider-Man battles personal demons and an alcohol addiction following Mary Jane's death. Think dark. Very dark.

John Carpenter based Michael Myers's mask from Halloween off of the mask from Eyes Without A Face. He revealed so in "A Cut Above The Rest" on the Halloween 25th Anniversary DVD.

I can most certainly see the resemblance. It's shockingly vacant and seriously terrifies the girls. An obvious choice for Michael Myers mask. I don't like the direction Zombie took the mask. I prefer the pure and absent expression of the original.

I have Eyes without a Face on my queue and I was hoping that it would be good. Sounded fantastic. I shall have to move it upwards a few slots.
I have never see Hercules but I remember liking Aladdin a lot. And the Lion King. I think I liked the Lion King because it was basically Shakespeare with animals. LOL Aladdin was good because of Robin Williams (though how he cleans up for these disney movies is a mystery).

i, for one, am hoping that this new Star Trek is a total departure from the usual franchise fare.. Wrath of Khan aside, i hate all things Star Trek.. Casino Royale broke the mold, and it was a fantastic movie.. maybe JJ Abrams can do the same for this series

Aladdin and Hercules are probably number 2 and 3 on my list of Disney's. Although that would be a very difficult list to compile. They are both amazing.

Have you watched many of the older Disney's Geez? If not, you gotta, as I for one find them much, much better than the more recent fare. The newer ones seem more interested in the sing a long songs and slapstick comedy than just a great storyline.

And off the top of my top some of Disney's movies I rank as so (not including their collaboration with Pixar):
1. Robin Hood
2. Sleeping Beauty
3. The Emperor's New Groove
4. Peter Pan
5. Alice In Wonderland
6. The Sword In The Stone
7. Snow White And The Seven Dwarves
8. Pinocchio
9. Dumbo
10. The Jungle Book
11. Lady And The Tramp
12. Beauty And The Beast
13. The Lion King
14. The Little Mermaid
15. Cinderella
16. The Fox And The Hound
17. Bambi
18. One Hundred And One Dalmatians
19. The Aristocats
20. The Black Cauldron
21. The Rescuers
22. Aladdin
23. Mulan
24. Pocohontas
25. Hercules
26. Tarzan
There's probably a few more which I don't own, and I don't really care about them. Anything above position 18 I'd rank as outstanding though.

Wow.. you and i differ alot with that list.
Re: what are you watching RIGHT NOW.... or somewheres about close to "right now"
Bar The Emperor;s New Groove which I find a comic masterpiece, I much prefer the old storybook Disney to the more modern singing, dancing, happy, clappy Disney. Not that that is entirely bad, just not as good in my opinion.

Absolutely Surfer. I grew up on Disney. Out of that list I haven't seen Emperor's New Groove and The Black Cauldron. But I have seen everything else. I like the new stuff. Mulan is very high on my list too. I love the old stuff too. I love it all. I'll put together a list for you.
1. The Lion King
2. Aladdin
3. Beauty And The Beast
4. Hercules
5. The Jungle Book
6. Mulan
7. Robin Hood
8. Pocohontas
9. the Great Mouse Detective

13. The Little Mermaid
14. Cinderella
15. The Sword In The Stone
16. One Hundred And One Dalmatians
17. Oliver and Company
18. Alice In Wonderland
19. Bambi
20. Pinocchio
21. Snow White And The Seven Dwarves
22. Sleeping Beauty
23. Dumbo
24. Lady And The Tramp
25. The Fox And The Hound
26. Tarzan
27. The Aristocats
A few of the older ones actually scared me when I was a kid, like Sleeping beauty, Pinocchio, and the Pink elephants song in Dumbo. That's why I didn't like them so much. However, they are all pretty great movies, and don't really start falling off until Sleeping Beauty in my opinion.

I love the fact that Disney scared the shit out of me when I was younger. It's because of these over protective mothers that we now get High School Musical instead of some of the most powerfully emotive scenes in children's movies nowadays. i would much rather my kid be petrified but engrossed in Dumbo rather than numb through HSM etc.

Oh I agree, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I still can't really even watch Sleeping Beauty it creeped me out so much. Also probably contributed to me having a phobia of needles. I rank it higher than some others though because its still a better movie.
Re: what are you watching RIGHT NOW.... or somewheres about close to "right now"
My eleven favorite Disney animated classics
1.The Great Mouse Detective
2.The Rescuers
3.Beauty and The Beast
4.Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs
5.Lady and The Tramp
6.The Lion King
7.Dumbo
8.Aladdin
9.Oliver and Company
10.Sleeping Beauty
11.Cinderella
Meanwhile, I've liked all of the official ones....except for Home On The Range. If there is any case of a company trying to run a popular line to the ground, this is it (another good example is Warner Bros.'s attempt to "reinvent" Looney Tunes with Loonatics Unleashed).

Re: what are you watching RIGHT NOW.... or somewheres about close to "right now"
As far as I am concerned Sleeping Beauty is a stunning, stunning movie which really stretched Disney in terms of animation techniques (they left behind their traditionally 'curvy' style in favour of more strikingly sharp images, as well as really playing with depth and scale), as well as a brilliant story and fascinating villain. The villains really make a Disney movie for me. If it's a good villain it makes for a good movie generally.
It's funny, my wife and I were having this same discussion last night. She had been babysitting with her brother who has his own son and they were both babysitting a friend's five year old daughter. The little girl wanted to watch Jaws. My wife was all for it, but her brother said no, it was too scary. My wife then proceeded to list the amount of movies which could be deemed scary at the age of five which they had watched and so why couldn't the girl watch it. Even so, he won the battle and they ended up watching some mind numbingly awful singing and dancing tv program which they all admitted was awful.
It really frustrates me to hear this, and I for one will not be doing it with our kids. They will be experiencing the best cinema has to offer with no measure taken to prohibit their viewing (of course within reason). So anyway, back on topic I urge you to rewatch Sleeping Beauty. It is a masterpiece and I love it.
