An Idea for Future Seasons - a change to the "User Rating" category?

Post by Shrykespeare on Sun Feb 22, 2009 11:36 pm

I had an idea, which, if enough of you agree, I might implement in a future season.... how about, instead of having a "User Rating" category based solely on IMDb's numbers, we have a category called "Overall Rating" which would work like this:

1. Take the movie's IMDb User Ratings score (from ordinary moviegoers), and multiply it by ten, to get a whole number between 10 and 100.
2. Take the movie's Rotten Tomatoes "% Fresh" score.
3. Average the two numbers together. This would provide a balance for those movies that don't get a fair shake from IMDb users, as well as for awful movies that get high numbers based on fanboy participation.

Granted, Madea Goes to Jail wouldn't improve that much, given its RT score is currently 36%, but it would help shorten the often wide abyss between professional and everyday critics.

What do you guys think?

I'd be very happy to implement that. Far too many movies are either underrated, or in the case of some films over rated. The demographic that put the scores on imdb is too narrow to give a fair reflection. I think the idea is simple enough to use and would give at least a more balanced view of the film.

I vote no. I am too use to imdb's system to want to change it now. I am not familiar with rotten tomatoes and how they rate films or what they may consider good or bad. I vote to keep it the way it is. Does rotten tomatoes release their numbers before films get a major release? To my knowledge they do. IMDB doesn't do this except for small festival type films. If they do, and you are able to get that information ahead of time, I especially votew to keep it as it is.

I'm all for adding the Rotten Tomatoes scores in to create a more fair score.

My idea is to combine the IMDb score and a converted Rotten Tomatoes score (to 10 instead of 100) to create a score that will be divided by two.

A couple of examples:

Madea Goes To Jail
IMDb rating: 2.6
Rotten Tomatoes score: 36% (converted to 3.6 out of 10)
Combined Score: 6.2
New Score: 3.1

Wall-E
IMDb rating: 8.5
Rotten Tomatoes score: 97% (convered to 9.7 out of 10)
Combined Score: 18.2
New Score: 9.1

I think that was generally the idea Shryke was putting forward.

as of this moment, RT has Madea at 31% while IMDB has it at 3.4.. So, if this proposed system were in place, Madea would actually get LESS points than it is getting now..

i think it's a good idea.. an even average will penalize movies whose scores have been inflated by fanboys, and movies that have been unfairly discriminated against by imdb voters (for whatever reason) will be given a bonus

If you want lower, here's a good example:

The Air I Breathe
IMDb Rating: 8.8 (I believe at it's highest, before the film opened)
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 3% (or 0.3)
Combined Score: 9.1
New Score: 4.6

Under that new score idea, the film would have absolutely killed your slate instead of helping it due to the Sarah Michelle Gellar fanboys.

Yeah, that's the thing with RT. When will the RT % be finalized, since reviews are always coming in? I think once that gets clarified then maybe the system can be implemented.

wouldn't they continually update as new reviews are posted? don't we revise the imdb score as it changes throughout the season?

maybe we could require a minimum number of RT reviews before it is taken into account.. 5? 10? if that number isn't reached, the movie gets the user score exclusively from imdb

Yeah, I had to constantly update IMDB scores throughout the leagues I run anyway, so that wouldn't make any difference.

Opposed. This is needlessly creating extra work.

The iMDb works just fine. Are there abuses? Yes. Do they ruin the game? No. I have a hard time believing that we haven't figured out yet that the haters were going to poison the score for the new Tyler Perry movie and quite frankly I have no sympathy for anyone who picked it on any of their slates in an Ultimate league. C'est la Guerre, Napoleon. Obscure films which receive far fewer reviews than more mainstream films might also see disproportionate lifts or declines if we base off of RT reviews (who, by the way, aren't particularly discriminating in who a "professional" critic is). For all the minor injustices that rampant fanboyism can bring, I'm much happier leaving the voting to the imdb's democracy and it's checks and balances. If I'm smart enough to track where the fanboys are voting, hey, i'm happy to be rewarded for my diligence. Time does balance out a lot of things. No system is perfect and no system is safe from being exploited or abused. We looking through a microscope at minute flaws in individual pieces of a giant puzzle. The puzzle itself is just fine within the greater context of fairness.

Very well put A_Roode. And really, the imdb system works 95% of the time. Rotten Tomatoes would have its own flaws, as mentioned by a few people already. It just wouldn't be worth it. We just need to price accordingly. there is a reason Madea was only $15 in Ultimate leagues. It would have had to be no less than $28 for what it is going to bring in, but because of the hit you take in imdb, you get a huge discount on the stats you will get from the other three categories.

I thank you all for your opinions. Given the arguments for and against, I guess we will continue to go with IMDb as our sole source of User Ratings. (Though, in conversations with MrHam, who is frankly opposed to having that category included at all, I had to make this option available for all to ponder.)

Vive le Fantaverse!

Post by Swedgin! on Thu Feb 26, 2009 1:32 am

Sorry for the delay in replying to this, Shryke, after we spoke I sort of forgot you were planning on soliciting feedback here.

I'm "for" some revision to the current system, but I think we ought to take our time considering the hows and whys and wherefores of it. Changing up the way we do things is not something I'm averse to -- I've long been a proponent of "growing" the game now that we the players, and not FM's (t)PTB, are in complete control. Neither am I a fan of protecting endangered species at any cost, particularly that most irritatingly unextinct genus, the sacred cow, bovidae futilitus maximus.

IMDb's User Ratings system leaves much to be desired, particularly with regard to predominantly African-American-cast films, and is notably skewed in favor of limited-release titles with certain, shall we say, currently viable political and philosophical biases. However, it IS the most comprehensive consumer-driven resource I know, and I for one am unwilling to put this category completely in the hands of the professional critics. I like Shryke's (and Boussh's) composite calculations, but I really think we need to find a third established source to balance things out. This should be a subject of research for interested gamers -- including yours truly -- over the next several months, so we can debut a new system next January, after the current Super Leagues (and Super Contest) season has concluded.

Any additional thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated!
