Re: The DVD Thread
Very disappointed with bargains at our local Circuit City. They're only down to 30% off! I did almost pick up Defcon: The Game for my computer, but decided to hold off.

Re: The DVD Thread
At 30% at my CC, there are still a ton of DVDs left. It doesn't look like they're gonna sell much until at least 50%.

Actually, they are not 30% off. They're 30% off of the prices they raised everything to before they announced the going out of business sale. When something like this happens, the sale is run by a liquidation firm who comes in and raises the prices so they can make it look like they're gving huge discounts. We shopped around and found that prices on some items were 10% - 25% higher than they were on Black Friday (Day after Thanksgiving). A 46" TV that was $649 on BF was $1079 less 30% the day we went in. That's alomost $100 more. What's even funnier is that the same TV was available at Best Buy for $729.
Re: The DVD Thread
Guys, I'm coming to the U.S for a month or so in June. I'll be in San Francisco and then Florida. While I'm over there I'm gonna try and buy quite a lot of dvds and cds at U.S prices. Which stores would you recommend I try. I've heard Circuit City, Target and Best Buy mentioned quite a lot. Are these the best places to start?

Surf,
Those are definitely good places to look. Wal-Mart is another one. Also, thrift stores sometimes get DVD's and sell them at really low prices.

Re: The DVD Thread
Circuit City will probably be all gone by then. You can't go wrong with Best Buy. Wal-Mart and Target usually have a good selection of deals. Just don't go to FYE. Damn is that store overpriced. I don't even know how they get customers when the competition is so much cheaper.
Re: The DVD Thread
That's probably why the FYE here closed down back in late 2007. However, I got the two-disc Monster there new for $4.99 before they closed (I also got Slither and Land Of The Dead used that same day there).

Well, I'd only go to FYE if they're looking for steelbooks. They usually have the better exclusives and whatnot.

Re: The DVD Thread
for new stuff: Amazon (particularly if you qualify for free shipping)...
for used stuff: blockbuster video, hollywood video / gamecrazy, locally owned videostores, ebay, used cd/dvd shops, netflix (although i think they're about to terminate that part of their sales department), thriftstores, goodwiil, etc..

Re: The DVD Thread
Not to be a rain cloud, but do you have a 'Region Free' dvd player Surfer? New Zealand is region 4 and US discs are region 1 so there could potentially be playability issues for you.

Re: The DVD Thread
I have codes to pretty much make any dvd player region free. So all my dvd players are as such. That would have been a tad embarassing though... Anyway thanks for all the help everyone, I'm looking forward to some bargains.

Re: The DVD Thread
one tidibt about Best Buy: their in-store prices are oftentimes higher than the prices advertised on their website.. however, they'll honor the online prices if (and only if) you take the time to specifically mention it............ (but, even then, Amazon consistently has better prices for new movies and music)

Re: The DVD Thread
I would use Amazon more often but because of where I live delivery charges make it less of an option. Plus, I like actually going into stores and rummaging through the records, you just can't get that shopping online.

Re: The DVD Thread
The Circuit City here officially closed today. I didn't see anything when I went the Friday before closing (they had a copy of Talk To Me at 80% off but I didn't get it) but I guess it was worth it to see the place one more time.
Meanwhile, I recently got these DVD's.
At Big Lots:
Bowfinger $3.00
Man On The Moon $3.00
Waking The Dead $3.00
Born On The Fourth Of July (special edition) $3.00
At Entertainmart (a locally-owned store that sells new and used DVD's, CD's, video games and other things):
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut $4.00 (though if I get the 14-disc Superman boxed set, I may get rid of this one but that will be awhile)
Cliffhanger (special edition) $4.00
Double Feature: Romeo Must Die/Cradle 2 The Grave (with the same extras from the previous releases) $4.00
Now I Have These Jennifer Connelly Films On VHS or DVD:
Phenomena (VHS, in the edited version known as Creepers)
Seven Minutes In Heaven (VHS, very rare but I managed to get a used copy for a dollar)
Labyrinth (two DVD copies)
The Hot Spot (VHS)
The Rocketeer (VHS, don't know if I still have it though)
Dark City (DVD, older release)
Waking The Dead (DVD)
Requiem For A Dream (DVD, uncut version)
A Beautiful Mind (DVD)
The Hulk (DVD)
House Of Sand and Fog (DVD)
Dark Water (DVD, director's cut)
Meanwhile, I'd Like To Get Or See These Come Out:
Once Upon A Time In America (2-disc DVD)
Phenomena (the uncut version on DVD)
Some Girls (DVD)
The Hot Spot (DVD)
Career Opportunites (a DVD with all of the deleted scenes as extras, mythical wish list)
Of Love and Shadows (DVD)
Higher Learning (a DVD with John Singleton's 150 minute director's cut, featuring more Jennifer Connelly/Kristy Swanson action)
Inventing The Abbotts (DVD)
Dark City (DVD, director's cut)
Pollock (DVD)
Blood Diamond (2-disc DVD)
Little Children (a new special edition DVD with some extras)
Far Harbor and Etoile (along with Seven Minutes In Heaven, the lost Jennifer Connelly films, in any format possible)
I'm sure that I'm missing a few. However, I am not a Connelly completist since I never plan to buy The Day The Earth Stood Still or He's Just Not That Into You. I am not a Paul Bettany completist either since I will never buy The Da Vinci Code (in fact, I walked out on that one when it came out in theatres).

On the weekend I purchased :- From Hell (2 disc editiion) $14
The Diving Bell & The Butterfly $10
Brokeback Mountain/Brothers Grimm Double $19
Not as cheap as you can find them over there but here the first 2 are good value considering they are new (as in not 2nd hand or ex-rental).

Wow, Buscemi, that's....uh, a lotta Jennifer Connelly.
Circuit City closed here too, the last DVDs they had were a ton of 1-disc Hancock and Walk Hard's.
