Re: The DVD Thread
I just got The Strangers for free from Blockbuster.
My mom got these "Free Used DVD Under $14.99" coupons from somewhere, but you can only use one at a time so I'll probably go back tomorrow and pick up another one.

Re: The DVD Thread
blockbuster and hollywood video both have good prices on used dvds.. when you see a "3 for $15" ("4 for $20" etc) sign, it's usually just a matter of asking nicely to get them for $5 a piece (in others words, ONE for $5..).. they make money buy only putting one or two GOOD movies next to those signs, so most people pick up the other 2 or 3 just to get the sale price--but it's usually not necessary..

I just tend to wait long enough in between visits to Hollywood Video that there are actually 3 or 4 movies on those racks that I would actually want to buy.

Re: The DVD Thread
I haven't been to a blockbuster (or any video rental place) since I moved to Arkansas so at least 2 years. It is not a 2 minute drive anymore so I just netflix rentals and buy in walmart 5 dollar bin or Best Buy if they are cheap.
Re: The DVD Thread
Blockbuster has all the big summer movies from last year in their 2 for $20 bin. They had anything that came out before that in the 4 for $20 part.
I just went to CC and it's only 20% off on DVDs and 10% electronics. I'm waiting until it at least hits 50%.

Re: The DVD Thread
I'm also waiting for a big drop. Maybe if we're lucky, it will be like Target at Christmastime where some 2-disc DVD's were $5.50 (I mentioned those here earlier).
Meanwhile, here are some movies I'd love to see special editions to:
Desperado- I'm still waiting for the NC-17 version to be released, with the added violence and the crotch gun scenes.
Spy Kids- with the Special Edition cut seen briefly in theatres in Summer 2001, plus some extras
Kill Bill- the full version that was announced in 2005 in a Blade Runner-esque box set
The Hand That Rocks The Cradle- I'd love to hear a director's commentary for this one. The film was a big hit when it came out and I'm sure that some people would buy a copy.
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids- this needs to be released in a widescreen version. Another big hit when initially released, I'm sure there is enough vault material and enough people wanting a copy to get this released.
The Road Warrior- this was one of the first DVD's ever released. Since then, many of the early DVD's have been reissued. But not this one, the film that made Mel Gibson a name in the US? This deserves a two-disc released with all of the bells and whistles.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome- ditto.
The Lethal Weapon Series- the director's cuts of the first three were good but they didn't have enough extras. These films need two-disc reissues with both edits and new retrospective documentaries with making-of material and interviews. The audition tapes for the original would also be great.
the Nightmare On Elm Street sequels- the original got a great special edition so why not the sequels? Maybe when the remake comes out.
They Live- in some foreign countries, they got some extras such as a John Carpenter/Keith David commentary. But here, the only extra is a recommendations screen. This film, being the cult classic that it is, deserves much more. The commentary plus a new documentary, a featurette on the fight scene and the trailer would work.
Creepshow- in the UK (where Universal owns the rights), they got a special edition. In the US, the disc is bare-bones. Unless Warner Bros. sells the rights, we'll always have that same disc.
The Naked Gun- Airplane! got a special edition and Top Secret got some good extras (such commentary and deleted scenes) on its DVD, but The Naked Gun's DVD currently only has the trailer. Not only do we need a new DVD for this film (such as commentary, deleted scenes and other things), but the sequels need new DVD's as well. With Paramount finally doing the right thing (such as giving us a new Flashdance DVD), this isn't too big of an order.
There should be more to come.

After my earlier statement, I hit up Hollywood Video this week. Tropic Thunder, Step Brothers, and Burn After Reading for $25. Not the cheapest deal, but they're all still relatively new releases.

Re: The DVD Thread
Nausicaa is one of my least favourite of the Studio Ghibli. But even then that tops most other animations....
Yesterday we bought Wall-E 2 disc edition - full price $30 (I couldn't wait for the possibility it may drop in price soon, I just had to have it), and The 400 Blows. I've heard a lot of brilliant things about this Trauffaut classic movie, couldn't pass it up for $10.
Also, not dvds, but couldn't contain the fact that I bought 6 new cds for $6 yesterday. Absolute bargain - Viva Voce, The Like, The Longcut, Semifinalists, Junior Senior and Stellastarr*.

Re: The DVD Thread
Yeah, I remember hearing them a couple of years ago when the played a venue in Liverpool supporting The Shins. I thought they were very, very good. Mixing MBV, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Mercury Rev, I thought their sound was enthralling and totally riotous. Never got round to getting their album though, so I was glad to see this one yesterday.

Re: The DVD Thread
It depends on the store, and how early they started shutting down. I know some of them that are already completely closed.

I also saw them at a festival, but it was a weird set-up. The lead singer would stand at the mike and sing for the first half of every song, and then run back and play the drums for the second half. Of every song. Still, I liked them. I think they're working on Album 2 this year.

Yeah, they had the exact same set up. It didn't seem to hamper their performance but it was a little strange.
