Re: An Idea Part 3: Same $h!t, Different Thread
So glad I got rid of Orphan on all my slates...
I just moved back home yesterday and surprise! I now have Starz until Friday. Seeing as how I don't go back to work until Friday, I'll try to watch as many movies on there as I can.
The House Bunny - 8/10. I had seen parts of it in theaters, but I finally sat through it all and it was pretty funny stuff. It reminded me alot of Confessions of A Shopaholic, as in a pretty crappy fluff movie made 10x better by the lead (Anna Faris/Isla Fisher). Faris is hilarious and totally carries the movie on her own, with a little help from watching Emma Stone try her hardest to improv.
Rewatched Hancock, still love it - shitty twist and all. Also rewatched Pineapple Express, just ok. Worse than Knocked Up and Superbad, but better than Zack & Miri and Observe & Report. Somewhere in the middle in the downward spiral of Seth Rogen...

I'm curious to know why you think it was amateurish? Was it the use of models? I have to say I prefer that to cheap CGI (hell, even most "expensive" CGI doesn't work).

i thought the opening credits looked a bit "made-for-tv"--but the rest of the movie was totally profesh, imo

I didn't mind the whole low-budget effects feel, i actually love movies that can keep that kind of stuff to a minimum...the things that got me were the crappy transitions, distracting artistic shots, and the fact that the pacing of the story was constantly shifting. I think it was an interesting story with some great genuine suspense and emotion that was, for me, severely held back by maybe trying to be too honest.

considering the schizophrenic nature of the plot, i think that was intentional (and effective, imo)IPKI$$ wrote:the pacing of the story was constantly shifting.

just curious: has Adventureland affected anybody's perception of Superbad (for better or worse), considering that both are from the same director (Greg Mottola)??

Not really. I thought they were different styles of movies to be honest. One was more R-rated comedy, the other was more coming of age dramedy.
To be honest, when i first heard about Adventureland, i thought it would be in the same boat as Superbad, but i liked both movies (Superbad a little bit more) and thought they both delivered what they set out to. My main problem with Adventureland was that it was too slow in some places, while that was never a problem with Superbad. That has more to do with scripts than with director though.
Re: An Idea Part 3: Same $h!t, Different Thread
Actually, I wished it had been more like Superbad rather than the Garden State clone it ended up being.

The Ugly Truth - 8/10 Dirty and hilarious. The movie really delivers right up to the ending, which unfortunately is incredibly forced. One hilarious scene, involving vibrating panties and Katherine Heigl delivering a marketing pitch in a restaurant is very reminiscent of Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, totally over the top and everyone in the theater was laughing and clapping at the end.

Not so much. Mottola wrote Adventureland, while he was just hired on to do Superbad by Apatow after doing a bunch of Undeclared eps back in the day. Adventureland was better IMO, though I liked both.

Re: An Idea Part 3: Same $h!t, Different Thread
Sorry I haven't been able to get on here recently, we are housesitting at the moment with no internet (IN THIS DAY AND AGE!!) and have been kept very busy in work. Anyway, recently I have been to the NZ international film festival and seen:
Dead Snow: 8/10
Absolutely hilarious zombie horror movie set in Norway. Why we haven't had zombie Nazi's before I'll never know. Brilliant in the old Evil Dead/ Braindead (dead-alive) and Shaun Of The Dead format. Taking every horror movie cliche and making a joke of it, as well as having some truly scary moments too. High praise indeed.
Mother: 8/10
The new movie from The Host director Joon-ho Bong. Following in style and genre to his previous movie Memoirs of a Murder, this is a very, very well made movie. Some great cinematography, terrific acting and a a storyline which reveals its twist a little early and then allows us to see the consequences of it.
Broken Embraces - 7.5/10
Almodovar's newest movie. Not as good as Volver, but still highly entertaining with some very good performances. Almodovar is somewhat like this generation's Hitchcock, he very rarely puts a foot wrong.
And on Adventureland, I haven't seen Superbad yet, but if it is even close to Adventureland I will be very impressed. I had the impression that Superbad was more of an Apatow movie and so I was never too bothered about seeing it, but if Mottola had a large creative imput into it I suspect it is very good. I may have to check it out.

The director of Dead Snow is now at work on a Hansel and Gretel movie being produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Reportedly, it's going to be a modern-day sendup of the story and will combine action with comedy.

I was talking to the other half the other day about when they would release some more Brothers Grimm movies, and she thought Hansel And Gretel would be a prime target for a movie. I would also like to see Little Red Riding Hood get made.
I suspect with Wirkola at the helm this version will turn out very good.

You ever seen the Freeway movies? Those are basically modern-day reimaginings of Brothers Grimm stories.

The first Freeway had Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland and was a modern-day version of Little Red Riding Hood.
The second Freeway had Natasha Lyonne and Vincent Gallo and was a modern-day version of Hansel and Gretel. This one is also known as Confessions Of A Trickbaby.

Away We Go - 10/10
Holy hell, I didn't expect to love this movie as much as I did. First off, it's hilarious. Not in a kinda-quirky, I'm-laughing-because-I-feel-I-should way, but in an Apatow, gut-busting way. Bert's antics to get Veronda's (sp) heartbeat up are some truly funny moments. It also has some great dramatic scenes, like the one at the amatuer strip club. I loved every second of the movie, something I can only say about Up so far this year. It's now tied as my favorite movie of the year.
On tomorrow schedule: Moon.

Moon - 7/10
It was really well-acted movie. Sam Rockwell did terrific, and the story was pretty good. It was a little hyped up so I expected more, but it was still a good movie. As for the opening credits, they look lifted directly from Heroes and I'm not sure that's a good thing. It was a nice change of pace to

- Spoiler:
- have the HAL-like computer actually helping the characters, instead of trying to take over the base and being evil and whatnot.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-aLong Blog 2/10
I have no idea why people were raving about how funny this stuff was when it first appeared on the net. For those that don't know what his is, it was created/produced by Joss Whedon and Neil Patrick Harris during the writer's strike and originally shown in 3 acts on the interweb. Rented the DVD from Netflix, and I really could use the 45 minutes that I wasted watching it back.

Re: An Idea Part 3: Same $h!t, Different Thread
A friend of mine sent me a link to that a few days ago but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
And I will annoy FriendO but I think Joss Whedon is terrible. Serenity was boring even though a few of my friends liked it.
On a side note, back on topic, I watched a movie with my wife last night. To steal a phrase from Delaney (Craig Robinson) from Zack and Miri Make a Porno, "I am disgusted at how turned on I am."
The movie was Stick It which is a high school gymnastics movie. I agreed to watch it simply because Missy Peregrym is hotter than hell. So we started watching it and I liked it quite a bit. The hot chicks in leotards did not hurt but it was actually not bad. 6.5 / 10 stars
And now I feel dirty.

Ahhhhhhh, Ben Roethlisberger's old girl friend before he apparently, and I did say only apparently, started taking up with hotel employees in Tahoe
