Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
(500) Days of Summer just made the top 250 as well. Its currently at an 8.3 IMDB rating and a #111.
Moon just made the top 250 as well. It currently has an 8.0 IMDB and is at #236 just above Good Will Hunting, Magnolia, and Mystic River.
Do you know what this means for legs for District 9, most likely? The other three that opened wide and hit the top 250 this year are Star Trek, The Hangover, and Up.

TTW is doing well. I have been pretty high on this film and i was pretty sure it would do well due to it being a sucessful book. Also thanks Bandslam for tanking and just putting another dagger into my draft league slate.

Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
Besides Vanessa Hudgens not being the lead, here are some more reasons why Bandslam flopped:
-PG rated films do not appeal to teen audiences (see Sky Captain and The World Of Tomorrow)
-Films that are solely focused on rock music never make money (The School Of Rock is an exception but that was more of a Mr. Holland Opus-type film than a Rocker/Bandslam/Detroit Rock City-type film).
-Walden Media produced it. When Walden Media produces a film and the word Narnia isn't in the title, it's going to be a dud.
-Teen movies with creepy looking male leads haven't been doing well (500 Days Of Summer meanwhile avoided this by casting the decent looking Joseph Gordon-Levitt as its creepy male lead).

Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
Box Office Mojo estimates.
Top 5:
5 pts - District 9
4 pts - G.I. Joe
3 pts - Time Traveler's Wife
2 pts - Julie & Julia
1 pt - G-Force
PTA:
5 pts - It Might Get Loud
4 pts - District 9
3 pts - Time Traveler's Wife
2 pts - G.I. Joe
1 pt - Julie & Julia
How about that - Julie & Julia made more per theater in its second week than Ponyo in its first. And kudos to the few people who picked It Might Get Loud (June: brockman, codeslinger, Aquamann, mfrendo; July: W, leestu, Banks; August: none)
G-Force and GI Joe will both cross $100 million in the next couple days. Public Enemies will fall just shy of $100 million, just as Monsters vs. Aliens will fall just shy of $200 million. Harry Potter has an outside shot at $300 million. Transformers is slowly creeping up on $400 million.

I thought The Hangover was the funniest movie since Tropic Thunder (although Role Models was hilarious).
Zack and Miri was great but one line may be the funniest thing I have ever heard.
"That chick frosted me like a chocolate cake."
Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
Hehe, I only thought it was appropriate in a Tropic Thunder discussion
Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
Interesting piece of trivia: District 9 is now the highest-grossing South African production ever in the US. Previously, the most successful South African film at the US box office was The Gods Must Be Crazy at $30 million back in 1984.

Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
This just in: many Hollywood insiders are calling the Bandslam ad campaign the worst in recent memory. The reason being that the studio decided to promote as another Disney/High School Musical-type film rather than the well-reviewed rock drama that it actually is.
Well that, Vanessa Hudgens isn't the star and the lead male looks like a young Robert Englund (which is freaky).

I didn't mention it in my review, but Aly from Aly & AJ is a pretty good actress. She could probably have a nice movie/singing career, like Mandy Moore or something.

Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
One problem: Aly and AJ never really made it. They did alright for awhile but Miley Cyrus surpassed them and they never had any major hits.
Also, you know that your career is dead when you star in a film version of a reality show (My Super Sweet 16: The Movie).

Hey Banks,
One review of bandslam that I heard mentioned something along the lines of the film containing something for David Bowie fans. Care to elaborate or would that be a spoiler?

Um yeah, the main character has a weird obsession with David Bowie. Periodically, he'll have a voiceover which are letters he writes to Bowie. It's very unneccesary and annoying but
- Spoiler:
- at the end of the movie, David Bowie writes back to him, saying that he's seen the characters' band on Youtube and wants to sign them to his new indie label.

Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
off topic but I just noticed that this past weekend at the overseas boxoffice Ice Age 3 crossed 600million. This is pretty huge because it is the first animated film to ever reach those numbers. Considering its soft start here in the usa where the film has ended up is pretty impressive. It is the 25th biggest movie of all time worldwide. And overseas it is the 9th biggest movie of all time, trailing only 4 of the 6 Harry Potter films, POTC 2&3, Return of the King, and Titanic. With a budget of only 90 million and a worldwide gross that will top 800million, be on the look out for Ice Age 4 in the very near future. It would be crazy for them not to make one, the 3 films cost 229 million total (probably less than Transformers 2) and have brought in a whopping 1.8 billion.

Very Well said geez. Comedies are proably the biggest opinion splitters out of any other genre because like you said different people find different things funny. IMO The Hangover is the funniest movie of this year and one of the funniest in recent memory. Thats what i love about this site different views is one of the many things make this site so interesting.

Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
That is true. We all agree that nazis killing people is bad (well, except nazis) but not everyone agrees that a naked asian man leaping out of a trunk to beat people with a tire iron is comedy gold (it is).
Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
Exactly, and to your point, I didn't find that funny at all. Just stupid.
However, it was funny to hear "Suck on these Tiny Chinese NUUUTS"

From what I understand, Jeong asked to leap out of the trunk naked... They made him sign a waiver.

Re: Weekend Box Office (August 14 - 16, 2009)
The naked jump from the trunk scene was Ken Jeong's best scene in the film. The rest of his scenes felt like insults to gays and Asians.

The naked trunk scene was one of the funniest parts of the entire film. I thought Jeong was funny not hysterical like the leads but he was funny.
