I second Brokeback Mountain and unnominate Waiting... (a bad American Pie wannabe).

I nominate Wallace and Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, Saw II, Wolf Creek, Munich, Transamerica and The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

I'll second both Syriana and Match Point.

As for Waiting, I don't think it's an American Pie wannabe so much as if you haven't worked in a restaurant or a similar job, you won't connect to it on the same level.

I'll second Walk The Line, Wallace And Gromit, Saw II, and Wolf Creek. The guy that played the villain in Wolf Creek is an actor who has made a well-respected career in Australia from playing nice guys, normal decent husbands and fathers etc. To see his transformation in this movie, totally unlike any character he has played before, was mind-blowing. For those who haven't had the oppurtunity to travel outback Australia he has captured exactly what the people who live out there are like, the way they talk, act etc. Obviously without the evil, sadistic, demented elements. I am referring to the way he is when you first meet him in the movie. The friendly, rough, helpful, charismatic story teller who is a bit strange.

I have only seen a couple scenes of Manos (which in English means "Hands"): the Hands of Fate. It's probably the real answer to the worst film, of any kind, ever made. The title is freaking Hands: the Hands of Fate!!!

i give it a solid "meh". Baumbach was apparently unable to write in more than one voice while creating this screenplay.. so, despite there being several major characters, they all sound and act exactly the same.. and, unfortunately, that single archetypal character that Baumbach came up with comes off as a pompous ass 99% of the time..

it's pretty much like trying to recreate a Wes Anderson movie--but casting Juno in all the lead roles.. ugh..

But the pompousity is intentional- that's where the humour comes from. As for the characters sounding the same- well they're a family influenced by a strong-minded father- it's natural that the children (especially the eldest) use the same way of speaking as their father. So that wasn't really an issue. And even saying that, I dont' think thje younger child's dialogue sounded that much like the father's.

Still, Baumbach's limitations are evident. More because of MArgot at the Wedding than this film, though.

If you haven't seen them, you should definitely check out my other nominations Donte. They all came out in those first two months and are all very good. Fateless is a very harrowing Holocaust drama from the point of view of a Jewish boy. Some fascinatingly shocking scenes with brilliant performances. Tristram Shandy is absolutely hilarious from Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden, and Tsotsi is a very brutal portrayal of South Africa and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film that year.

Second Hostel and What The Bleep. Coincidentaly have watched both of them the past week. Some of What The Bleep went right over my head, but some of it I hope to find useful. The whole Marlee Matlin at the wedding section was so funny.
