Shryke:

It must be the way that I'm wired but with music there are songs that just infect me. I knew of that Gnarls Barkley song long before you played it here and it is a definite favourite. When I first heard it, I sought it out, got a copy and played it over and over obsessively -- we're talking 30 or 40 times on repeat. It gets in, takes hold and never lets go. Excellent choice my friend, excellent choice! I don't care to speculate about their costume choices though, *lol*

Keyser:

Weren't the Digital Underground just wonderful? Remember their cameo in the Aykroyd/Candy/Chase/Moore cringe-fest 'Nothing But Trouble'? A bit better than the current 3.9 on the iMDb... but not by much! The song they played in that one was this one (keep your eyes open for Tupac Shakur):

Donte:

Only one thing to say... \m/ Twisted Evil \m/

numbersix:

You've given me some new artists to listen to. Thank you my friend!

Ah, the rap of the early 90s. Digital Underground was a hoot.

I remember watching one of those VH1 “Behind the Music” thingies, where they were interviewing Sir Mix-a-Lot about the success of “Baby Got Back” and how gangsta rap came about not long after that. He basically said, “Dr. Dre and Snoop came along and put a cigarette out on my ass, saying ‘Thanks, we’ll take it from here.”

I remember when all I knew about rap music was found in the lyrics of Mix-a-Lot, Young M.C., Tone Loc and Rob Base/DJ E-Z Rock. Good, harmless fun, and cool to groove to.

Oh yeah, and then there was this guy, who proved that rappers don’t necessarily make good singers. Of course, if he hadn’t, we wouldn’t have one of the most hilariously, hysterically awful songs ever created. And it still makes me laugh my ass off.

My video pick for Tuesday, January 6th:

Biz Markie – Just a Friend

Here's a thought; If you can't sing and are hot maybe you should be in porno sucking cock on camera instead of making music videos with bad music!!!! (that goes for kanye also)

Haha, fair enough. I hate Auto Tune also, ever since Cher introduced it to my poor, poor, suffering hearing. But what can I say, Kanye pulled off a great tune, reigning in lots of strange elements (Japanese drums!) to make a unique song.

And Roodey, you're welcome!

Roode,

Had forgotten all about that Digital Underground song being used in Nothing But Trouble. Like you said, an underrated movie and definitely better than the 3.9 rating on IMDB.

As long as we're kicking it back to old school rap days, here's another personal favorite of mine that will hopefully help me wash out the remaining strains of Shryke's pick. (Sorry, Shryke, but I can only imagine that song being used as some sort of torture in third world countries)

Hahaha It is hilarious because as I was writing that rant I thought...
"Didn't Cher use it for a song in the 90's. So that whore is to blame for this current trend."

And then I thought.
"Boy I sure wish Cher had taken up skiiing instead of Sonny..."

And then I thought.
"Gee is this why nobody likes me?!?!?"

I'll be back to play some of the 90's rap music later, but wanted to go for something a little more in the ass-kicking department first. 'Tygers of Pan Tang' with six and a half minutes of some of the best rock and roll you'll hear. Damn these guys were under-rated!:

Since everyone's on an old-school rap kick, here's a little something from one of the men who came a bit afterward, and changed the cycle (along with Dre, Snoop, and the like). Probably the HARDEST song I've ever heard, especially being directed at one group of people. The first time I heard it in a friends car back in the day, I sat listening awestruck at how crazily-pissed, and almost hateful, the lyrics were. I played it for my dad once, when driving. He kind of laughed and said it was better than the metal I was listening to at the time (which consisted of Slayer, among others). Gotta listen til the end, that's when it gets a little more hardcore...

What, because you want Cher dead? That's about as exclusive a club as the Yellow Pages. Because you spell skiing with three "I"? Not at all, in fact, it looks cooler that way, more symmetry.

The truth is, we ALL here in the Fantaverse, every man Jack, we all loves us sum Donte. We just pretend that we don't. You're the 'verse's Rodney D.

My submission for today; a song from a band who having released one of the best debut albums of the last decade, disapperared off the face of the planet. They released an EP last year, and I hope more is soon to follow. They were one of the first bands the wife and I danced to back in the UK, and this song always makes me smile:

Well, I'm not really into rap/hiphop but just like with country, there are exceptions, so I'll throw in one I love that falls into the G's! :

Grits - All Fall Down (i've always found this to be a very striking video/song, probably near a decade old at this point)

Hmm... 24 hours and no one's posted? Guess I'll have to keep it going...

Back to the letter "G", with a classic band, a classic song, a classic video.

My video pick for Thursday, January 8th:

Grateful Dead - Touch of Grey

And while I'm at it, here's my video pick for January 9th. One of those cool little ditties from the early 90's. Does anyone remember THIS group?

Shryke,

You know batting .500 will get you into the hall of fame easily. Thought I was the only one who remembered Grapes of Wrath or "The Canadian REM" as they were referred to, but that Grateful Dead song is just awful. Even Bob Weir considers it the worst thing they ever released.

My choice for today: Ned's Atomic Dustbin with "Kill Your Television"

They were a great little band who had two decent radio hits (I'll play the other one tomorrow) that I championed the hell out of when I was a radio dj back in college. They've since splintered off into a couple of other decent bands too: Limblifter, The New Pornographers and have worked with Matthew Good as well -- Matthew Good is on my list of artists to play here because, aside from 'Hello Time Bomb', he's never really taken off in the US market. Lot's of great music to come!

Keyser,

You know, I think it's almost become routine for me to ask myself two questions before I post a video on this thread:

1. Will Keyser know this song?
2. Will he like it?

Honestly, it seems that we share the same brain on so many different taste levels. I used to LOVE Ned's Atomic Dustbin... not only one of the coolest band NAMES ever, but one of the coolest bands. Though my favorite song of theirs is "Not Sleeping Around", and I also love "Grey Cell Green".

Keep it up!

Shryke,

Pretty scary. I think almost along the same lines except I'm usually pretty sure you will know my selection. It just comes down to whether you will like it. I actually like "Grey Cell Green" better, but I thought "Kill Your Television" might be liked better by the group as a way of introducing them to the Dustbin.

The answer to you first question will almost always be yes. If I hadn't known it on my own, I've since been introduced to it by the Mrs. I've got a feeling that our CD collections would match about 90% with the other 10% being you a little more on the lighter side, and ours (Again thanks to the Mrs. - Not my cup of tea) being a little more on the heavy/industrial side. She's a huge fan of Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, The Revolting Cocks, NIN, Rage, Ministry, etc. That stuff makes my ears bleed

Just found out today that Morrissey will be stopping here in Pittsburgh on his Spring tour and playing a 1,000 seat venue as well as our annual Winter appearance by Dave Wakeling and The English Beat.

Wow. Now THAT's a show. I envy you. One of my favorite songs ever is Morrissey's lilting strains on "Every Day is Like Sunday".

I only like a little bit of that hard-edged industrial stuff myself. My favorites include Ministry's "NWO", NIN's "Closer" and KMFDM's "Juke Joint Jezebel". The Cocks' cover of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" I actually found hysterical.

In fact, my video pick for tomorrow (a "G" group) will probably fit in this genre as well. Stay tuned.

Interesting experiment here. A member of the band says this is their worst song. They made music for damn near 4 decades and he thinks this is their worst song.

It is the only grateful dead song I do like. I think the rest of their music is blah and some I downright want to erase from my mind.

1 man's Trash = 1 man's treasure indeed. My turn.

A friend's dad died this week and opened some old scars so I thought this was appropriate.

Technically, something would have to be the worst song he thinks they recorded. Just a coinkydink that it happens to be the one you like the best. Sorry to hear about your friend's dad. Nothing like a little Neil Young to help you feel the mood. The one that I always grabbed a hold of in times like that was this one
