Wow, I didn't know that Becs, thanks for the info. It does annoy me that the band are taking the words of others and using it as their own, but at least it makes sense!

Now explain these lyrics:
"My global position system is vocally addressed/ they say the Nile used to run from East to West" (????!?)

Ok, so my last pick for 2008 was actually released in 2007, I figured I'd better go and find one that was actually released this year (Although it could quite possibly already be next year to some of our members).

This may have been released in 2008, but it could just as easily have been released in 1980. If the Sex Pistols and the Buzzcocks had a love child, it would have been Eddy Current Suppression Ring. This is "Which Way to Go"

Not bad, Keyser .The only thing I'd say is that your comparisons are so right that listening to that band just makes me want to listen to the Pistols or the Buzzcocks instead. They don't have anything else o offer, based on that song anyway. For all I know they could be Britney Spears backing-band for the rest of their songs...

Numbersix's Best Songs of 2008 Part 4

Speaking of musical lovechildren, here's what you get when you cross the moody atmospherics of Joy Division with the static of shoegazing 90's bands such as My Bloody Valentine. A Place to Bury Strangers are from Brooklyn, and the lead singer makes his money designing guitar effects pedals for the likes of U2 and Wilco. These guys love their noise. Excuse the poor video, they're a pretty low-key band.

My video pick for the very last day of the year is one of my all time favorite songs. So haunting, so emotional, so spot-on perfect, and you couldn't find a better voice than Johnette Napolitano to deliver it.

After spending all day yesterday listening to Blue Rodeo, I'm playing some more of them today. My choice is 'Hasn't Hit Me Yet' with a beautifully filmed video that you might appreciate the artistry of, even if you somehow don't like the song:

Good song choice there, Roodey. It's been almost fifteen years since I've listened to Blue Rodeo. Thanks for the memories.

I've had my ass kicked by a fever these last two days, and trust me, when your body is going haywire and your brains are scrambled, there's nothing that can calm you or soothe you more than a song by Enya. Some find her to be one-note and boring, but I honestly believe she has the most angelic voice I've ever heard. My video pick for January 1, 2009 is:

Enya - Amarantine

And I'll follow that up with my video pick for January 2, the song that is, quite simply and without question, my very favorite song of all time. It has been my favorite song almost from the moment I first heard it. I've seen Depeche Mode perform it live five times, and if you've never heard your favorite song sung by 15,000 people, it's a killer experience.

Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (live)

Enya? I believe South PArk got it right by saying her music is like being realy old- sweet in some ways, but in other, moer accurate ways, you just want to die and get it over with ;-)

Enjoy the Silence is indeed a fantastic song, so I consider it atonement.

Numbersix's 6 songs of 2008 Part 5

I'm bored of genre songs. We've been through them so much that they all start the same. What I like is a genre song that subverts itself somehow, usually incorporating a change of time signature as a sort of twist, to keep things interesting. I don't like dance music in general, but Crystal Castles do two things. First, the use music from Commodore 64's and 8-bit gear, which admittedly involves nostalgia into the appreciation. But secondly, their dance music has just an ounce of melancholy, injecting a morsel of self-conscious alienation that just about rises their music beyond night-club crap.

Shryke,

Like Meatloaf said, "Two out of three ain't bad". Since a member of Concrete Blonde is from this area, they seem to play here quite a bit, and we make sure never to miss them, and "Enjoy the Silence" is also one of my favorite DM songs. Enya, on the other hand, sounds like nails on a freakin' chalkboard to me. Even when she was with Clanad (sp), I just found her voice irritating.

Roode - Keep the Blue Rodeo coming!!!!!

Six - The Crystal Castles sounded like someone strangling a cat but with a heck of a dance beat.

Thought I'd kick off '09 with a little Elvis Costello from back in his angry young man days.

Funny how his words about the state of radio 30 years ago still ring true today.

This is "Radio Radio"

Okay, back to my almanac.

Unbelievable that this group was formed back in 1967, two years before even I was born. This is one of the true rock anthems of the 80's, and one of the coolest driving songs EVER. The video for the "short" version was pretty cool too, but one really needs to hear the extended version to get the full power of the song, I think you'll agree.

My video pick for Saturday, January 3rd:

Golden Earring - Twilight Zone

And this song was right below it....

Goldfinger - Here in Your Bedroom

This is not normally my genre but this band is worth it. Their lyrics are always saying something worth listening to and can sometimes be confronting and unpopular. In other words they say the things that need to be said that most people are too afraid to say. For a perfect example of this check out their track 77%.

If you liked/agreed with what they are saying then listen to Starship Troopers for their take on the desert storm conflict.

My next "G" video will be a huge departure for me, most will agree. I don't like a lot of rap music, but I appreciate those who pioneered it in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. This song has always been cool (like Shaft), and the lyrics resonate even today.

I agree with that statement 100%. Most rap artists have forgotten how to be cool afro and meaningful at the same time and that song will always fit the times. At least until we have a star trek federation type of world. Very Happy

Wonderful choice, Shryke. Grandmaster Flash started hip-hop on the basis that a huge section of the USA was not being represented in music. Sure, there was jazz and soul, but hip-hop was the music of the streets, music about social, class, and racial alienation. I know everyone says this, but it really is saddening to see most hip-hop these days being more interested in parading a collection of bitches and being only concerned with amassing wealth, while maintaining this infantile notion that guns and shootouts make you a man. At least there's Kanye West, who is struggling to do something different with his music.

Good choice, there, six. That song by Kanye got me thinking about another song that I love... it's way to recent to be in my almanac (which only goes through 1996), but, as luck would have it, this group also happens to begin with "G". How's that for serendipity!

This guy looks a little like Biggie, but his voice just blows me away, especially with this song, which is my favorite. I couldn't find my favorite version of the video on YouTube, so I chose an appearance they made on Letterman. My video pick for Monday, January 5th:

Great posts guys. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 really takes me back. Never a big rap fan myself especialyl once it became all about bitches, ho's, guns and money (As opposed to the great Warren Zevon song, "Lawyers, Guns and Money"). I long for the day when rap could be whimsical and fun just like this:

Okay, maybe there's a few bitches and ho's in it

Another great song, Shryke.

Anyway, time to finish

Numbersix's 6 Songs of 2008, Part 6

For my final pick, I've gone with an underdog of music. Most modern music involves people finding their feet at a young age (too young, for some). Just look at the success of MGMT, for example. Santogold has been around for a while, writing for acts, and working in punk bands but not getting anywhere. In her early 30's, she made her debut solo album, and it's a huge success. What's great about Santogold is that she manages to make urban ska-tinted music accessible by adding an element of punk-rock. I can hear he Pixies in a lot of her songs, for example. This song, LES Artistes, is an anthem to being the underdog, a dedication to individuality and not following the crowd (which is ironic, considering how popular she is becoming). The video is quite interesting, like a kind of social revision of the Sony Bravia commercials.

Some day people will look back on this decade and here that Auto-Tune shit in nearly 75% of the music on the Top 40 and they will think...

70's was Cowbell, 80's was the Synthesizer, 90's was the cracking voices of grunge singers and the 00's were about robotic sounding voices.

Auto Tune was cool for about 2 songs (and barely then). Now any person who cannot sing uses it to make themselves not completely fucking horrible.

Here's a thought; If you can't sing and are hot maybe you should be in porno sucking cock on camera instead of making music videos with bad music!!!! (that goes for kanye also)

Rant over. Smile

And now to get some aggression out of the way.

Pantera! Fuckin Hostile!!!
