Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
The New Line turmoil occured between late 2007 and early 2008. By late 2008, which was when The Time Traveler's Wife was originally scheduled, the company had reorganized and by then got some hits (Journey To The Center Of The Earth and Sex and The City both hit $100 million).

New Line Cinema doesn't exist anymore, it's been absorbed by it's parent company, WB. They just have the NLC tag on anything made while it still existed.

Actually, it's a sub-label of Warner Bros. Just like with Touchstone Pictures and Fox Searchlight.

I concur.
Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
Time Traveler's Wife probably won't do too well. $50 million probably but I don't see much more for it.
G.I. Joe meanwhile has everything: a huge marketing campaign including trailers in front of Transformers and Harry Potter, great reviews (yes it is true), an empty market to open in, appeal to families and urban audiences, etc.

Again, what do you base your prediction of Time Traveler's wife on, all of the middle age women you hang out with?
Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
But since there all two movies for middle-aged women, which one will they choose? A lot of older women don't like sci-fi so it's most likely they will go see Julie and Julia. The Time Traveler's Wife will be seen by the readers but probably no one else (due to competition from Julie and Julia and District 9).

Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
You couldn't be more far off base on Julie and Julia. One is a comedy and one is a romantic comedy/tear jerker. Not even close to the same category. Honestly, I don't know one person who even knows that Julie and Julia is coming out let alone is planning on going to see it. It's not the kind of movie that chicks will go to see with their girlfriends or will see multiple times if they do see it. Again, not one of the women I know even considers TTW to be a "Science Fiction" movie. The fact that the guy keeps disappearing only appeals to them more because of the heartbreak it adds to the story.
I do have to keep tempering my remarks by remembering the age group of many of the folks that are members of our little group here, but seriously I have to believe that folks like myself, Dante and Shryke have a little more experience with the opposite sex and what their likes are than some of our younger members.
You guys may want to ask your moms whether they and their friends will be seeing one or both of these movies and wait for their responses before passing judgement on them. I think you might be surprised by their answers.

Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
Women don't care about the sci-fi aspect of the film. They just care about the love story. They don't even really play up how the time traveling thing works in the trailer. They just show the love. Women love them some love.
P.S. My girlfriend wants to see both. She also watches the food channel, which is where most of the advertising of Julie and Julia is coming from.

Another problem: isn't the plot the exact same plot as The Lake House? And I don't remember too many people liking The Lake House.

The Lake house was about sending letters through time. And it starred Keanu Reeves. I really don't see a huge resemblance.

Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
It had time travel, strange romances, a sappy ending and a Canadian actor in one of the leads. See, it's the same movie.
And The Lake House had bigger names so that tells you something.

Wow, you just don't get it, do you?
So, you already know the ending is sappy for TTW even though you haven't seen it, and which lead actor is Canadian in it?

Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
You kind of figure it out in the trailer. Bana has the time traveling condition and it will eventually overcome him and his relationship.
And Rachel McAdams is Canadian. Keanu Reeves is Canadian. Just a bit of a similarity to the two films.

Unless they're from the Congo or have a thick Polish accent or something, I don't think it matters where they're from financially or critically speaking...

Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
I was just counting the similarities between the two.
And here is a new inclusion into my predictions:
August 21st
X Games 3D: The Movie (estimated to be in 1,250+ theatres for one week only)
Pros: it's in 3-D, it's from Disney
Cons: extreme sports movies never do well
Box Office Prediction: $4 million

My mom wants to see TTTW, if that counts for anything. I'd guess about $60M total, which I think is good.

Re: Buscemi's August Predictions
This whole thread is awesome, *lol* I just picture Buscemi at home reading Keyser and Geezer's posts and then cackling to himself as he says "Wait'll they get a load out of THIS!! Bwah hah hah!"
Finding Canadian leads in both movies just about had me in tears, *lol* I think the microscope is too focused. It's a problem we all share here being uber-super movie geeks. Women are going to see both movies and they're going to drag their men along with them. Or their girlfriends. Fingers crossed for me that it's number 2.
And I love that a potential $50 million box office take could be regarded as a failure. The studio will take that money and laugh -- literally -- all the way to the bank.
Part of the delay problem for 'TTTW' is the production rights and not actually the production. This was originally going to star and be produced by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Telling female customers that at the store, by the way, actually even makes them want to see it more, if that's possible. It won't be 'Mamma Mia!' big, but both films are going to do just fine.
