I'm actually kind of jealous. He's going to get to experience all of those movies for the first time. Lucky guy.

I find it quite amusing that all of us so called movie 'buffs' have not seen so many supposed classics which you would expect us to have. Actually its quite a relief to find that despite our obsession we still have so much to see and so much to learn from cinema, and that none of us are above this.
Yeah, I kind of had a phase as a "niche" film viewer. Like I would only watch stuff on IFC, Sundance, or stuff like that. Very few blockbusters or classics. It was pretty much anything made in the 90s-00s. But now I have been able to shed some of that stigma I had towards older films. I've got over 300 films in my Netflix queue and more then half of them are "classics."

Re: Movies That You Are Ashamed to Have Not Seen
that's a big chunk straight out of my personal Top 100 List right there! you got some Summer Homework to do..BanksIsDaFuture wrote:Psycho, Terminator, Godfather, Star Wars, Taxi Driver, Rocky, Raging Bull, Serpico, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now, Alien(s), A Clockwork Orange, 2001, The Shining, Chinatown, Rashomon, Braveheart, Fargo, Die Hard, Annie Hall, Heat, The Deer Hunter, The Graduate, Snatch, Trainspotting, Ed Wood, Patton, Network, Glory, or any Coen Brothers movies not named No Country For Old Men.
i came up with my almost-complete hall of shame: Lawrence of Arabia, Ikiru, Some Like it Hot, The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi, Sunset Blvd., Interiors, Short Cuts, Night on Earth, Kagemusha, Bullitt, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Long Goodbye, Battleship Potemkin, Dolemite, The Bicycle Thief, Peeping Tom, True Grit, Giant, The Pawnbroker, The Sword of Doom, Long Day's Journey into Night, Fellini Satyricon, Alice, Boxcar Bertha, Throne of Blood, La Dolce Vita, Zatoichi meets Yojimbo, A Very Long Engagement, Krull, Before Sunset, The Lower Depths, The Bad Sleep Well, La Strada, I Vitelloni, Rambo II & III, Amarcord, Alphaville, The Sorrow and the Pity, Tokyo Story, Pierrot Le Fou, The Passion of the Christ, and Marty (but i just got it from netflix, so that will be remedied shortly)
if there's a certain movie on this list that any of you haven't seen, we should agree to each rent it on the same weekend and then return to the forum after having seen it with our thoughts.. that might be a good way of finally watching some of those classics that you never seem to get around to actually sitting down and putting in the dvd player..
and, seriously Surfer.... watch 8 1/2... like NOW... same goes for you Roode, but with Annie Hall.. !!

I've never seen on your list:
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Dolemite
Zatoichi vs. Yojimbo (even though the basic plot of the film sounds dumb)
Alice (1990, I have it on VHS though)
and probably a few others

Re: Movies That You Are Ashamed to Have Not Seen
Off that list, I need to see (and want to see): Lawrence of Arabia, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, The Bicycle Thief, La Dolce Vita, The Bad Sleep Well, Satyricon, Boxcar Bertha...and I need to see Night on Earth again, as it's been forever...
I'm down to do the whole rent-it-at-same-time-and-discuss for any of those above movies...hell, I'll do it for some of those I haven't seen (and didn't have a particular desire to) too if that's what others want...

well, there's at least four of us who haven't seen Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.. if we make this happen, that might be a good pick for the first movie
(it's also available to "Watch Instantly" on Netflix.. making it extra accessible)

I haven't seen it either, but netflix isn't available outside the US and I doubt I'll be able to get my hands on it easily.

I've never seen it to rent anywhere outside of Netflix, despite it being on DVD, being directed by Scorsese and featuring an Academy Award winning performance.

Re: Movies That You Are Ashamed to Have Not Seen
I haven't seen Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore either and it is a movie that I have gone to all my local video stores to look for without success; but I would love to take part in a 'specific movie this weekend' scheme. I was thinking after reading the thread about the state of the forum that one thing I miss (or would like more of) is discussion about older movies. (by older I mean movies not currently screening). The plan from Nspan could help this.
And Roodey, if I win lotto in the immediate future can I come to your 'Hitchcock in chronological order' extra long weekend?

I think I actually own Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore as part of a Scorsese DVD package...so it's available as part of that...

Re: Movies That You Are Ashamed to Have Not Seen
I think NSpan's idea sounds great. I would be like a book club but with dvds. I have a huge collection so I will probably have a number of the movies a lot of you want to see so I will be happy to participate. Maybe we should arrange to do it once every weekend when we may actually all have a chance to sit down and watch one, and then comment on it on the monday. We could set up a separate thread just for the dvd club?

I'm down. Which movie should we do this weekend? Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore? Or something else (if we're gonna do it this weekend, it would be easier if it streams from netflix...).

The Pawnbroker
Long Day's Journey into Night
Boxcar Bertha
La Dolce Vita
The Lower Depths
La Strada
I Vitelloni
The Sorrow and the Pity
Pierrot Le Fou
Marty
Movies I have never seen:

Wow, I'm amazed that there were actually 20 movies on your list that I have not seen
Re: Movies That You Are Ashamed to Have Not Seen
The thing with me is that I go through phases when it comes to movies. And I'll watch so many similarly themed films, or films within a certain genre or by a certain director or starring certain actors or actresses, and I just am constantly changing speeds. So, I never get around to seeing every movie I want. Also, I tend to go for obscure titles over more well known classics whenever they present themselves because my mindset is, "10 years from now I may not be able to find this movie anywhere." As opposed to say Lawrence of Arabia or Dog Day Afternoon which I could probably find and watch pretty much any time I wanted.

Re: Movies That You Are Ashamed to Have Not Seen
Before I put my list together, let me just announce that I am just noticing that Shawshank is on top of the imdb top 250!!! I don't know how long it has been there, but hell yeah!!! Finally The Godfather is off the top! Shawshank is about 10000000000 times better! Now on to constructing my list, using that very top 250.
Almost entirely from the 250. If I have absolutely no desire to see a film, I didn't include it.
12 Angry Men
Casablanca
The Usual Suspects
North By Northwest (soon to be rectified)
Citizen Kane
It’s a Wonderful Life
Taxi Driver
Lawrence of Arabia
Vertigo (also soon to be rectified)
M
To Kill a Mockingbird
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Requiem for a Dream
L.A. Confidential
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Raging Bull
Indiana Jones Temple of Doom and Last Crusade
Blade Runner
The Green Mile
Cool Hand Luke
Fargo
Annie Hall
Heat
The Deer Hunter
Platoon
Life of Brian
Dog Day Afternoon
Gone With the Wind
Trainspotting
Children of Men
Twelve Monkeys
Dial M for Murder
Planet of the Apes
The Untouchables
And any foreign film
I'm sure there are tons not on the 250 that I am ashamed to not have seen, but I am not going to track them down. If anyone wants to know if I've seen a certain film, they can ask, but for now, here is my shame list.
