What's the WORST 'Best Picture' Academy Award winner of all time?
Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
You say "of all time", but you only list those after 1990... does that mean you think every single one that won before that was deserving?
Shakespeare in Love gets my vote.

No... Only that the very LEAST deserving are all clustered, like hyperdimensional rat pellets, around the last two decades of the space-time continuum. You say "of all time", but you only list those after 1990... does that mean you think every single one that won before that was deserving?

Anytime I get to vote for Crash on a worst of list is a good day. Thanks Swedgin!
Shakespeare in love would be second, only because it is the most undeserving, as no way in hell should it have beaten Saving Private Ryan.

I know a lot of you disagree with me, and I have discussed this (briefly) with Buscemi before, but following your criteria of "Pick one that drives you f@$%in' nuts." For me it is Forrest Gump that does that.

I'll second that- I actually like Shakespeare in Love, but it didn't deserve the Oscar. Crash on the other hand is a piece of heavy-handed garbage. I've seen instructional videos with more subtlety.
The forgettable Million dollar Baby comes a close second

So, I went with Million Dollar Baby, but I don't see why American Beauty is on here. It was definitely more deserving than the other four movies in its year...although I guess you could make an argument for any one of them that year. That was a good year.

And no way in hell would I put Saving Private Ryan (certainly a fine, visceral war movie) ahead of 'The Thin Red Line' which was the real prize that year.

Keep in mind that The Thin Red Line divided people when it first came out. I still remember seeing the nomination ceremony that year and most of the people in the audience booed when it came up.

Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
I haven't seen the Thin Red Line because my parents thought it was boring and it sucked. They let me watch Saving Private Ryan when i was young because they felt it was so vastly superior and a must see film that I should watch it. I've been in love with it ever since.
Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
I can understand your parents not liking The Thin Red Line. Just from reading about your taste, they seem to be into the mainstream war titles. The Thin Red Line is more of an art film and probably wouldn't be enjoyed by the average taste.
They (maybe you included) probably would have hated Malick's rough cut even more. It runs five and a half hours and contains even more characters and story.

Yeah, the way I see it, Saving Private Ryan is like a pulp novel, and The Thin Red Line is like poetry. The latter is more insular, reflective. I personally prefer it, but I could see people hating it.

Braveheart was infinitely more infuriating than any movie on this list* and gets my vote for the Worst Best Picture of my lifetime.
*(I haven't seen Chicago because I hate musicals, and I haven't seen Crash because it looks awful, but it couldn't possibly be worse than Braveheart.)

YES, YES, A thousand times YES!!!!!!!!!
Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
'Braveheart' is one of those kinds of movies that I loved when it came out, I glad I saw it and I will quite happily never watch it again. Maybe I just need to give it some time until misgiving fades into the fog of nostalgia.

Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
Watch Crash. I beg you. Seriously, do it. If you honestly think its better than Braveheart, then well, I don't know what to tell you. I just can't see that happening.
Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
I kinda wanted to vote for Crash or Chicago, but having seen neither, I didn't think it was right to do so. Went with Shakespeare in Love...whjich I only saw pieces of, but got the general feel... Would've voted for Braveheart if the opportunity to do so was there (and why wasn't it, out of curiosity? Especially when stellar films like Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby are...).

William Wallace would kick William Shakespeare's ass any day. Shakespeare seems like a brawler but Wallace had the chivalry. But in a fair fight, Wallace would still win.

Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
I don't understand the hate for Braveheart. I have watched that film probably 6 or 7 times. One of the only film Geez and I agree on. Plus it has swords cuttin legs off and guys getting their heads bashed in with warhammers while Chicago had women in prison and no rape...
I liked most of the other movies on the list.
You all know which third term bloody, worm-ridden, maggot-infested pile of an incestual miscarriage that I voted for...
Titanic Blech

Donte,
I can't disagree with ya there. One of the worst pieces of drec(sp) ever put on celluloid and doubly so since it prevented one of my all time favorites, LA Confidential from claiming its just reward. I just happen to dislike Braveheart a smidge more than Titanic which should tell you just how much I depsise it. Bleh!!!!!!
Re: Worst 'Best Picture' ever?
hmm, i have to disagree. not because its good or anything. but because you've said that you've never seen it.
