I've been excited for this ever since they first announced that they would be expanding the short into a film (I first saw the short in a complilation of Oscar shorts in 2006). Hopefully the final result is just as good or even better than the short. A great cast and two major fantasy directors as producers help things.

Re: _____9_____
yeah, i'm pumped that Shane Acker is directing.. after seeing the original (in that same compilation of Oscar shorts a couple years back), we heard rumors that Tim Burton was going to adapt it into a full-length movie.. we were pretty devastated to think that Johnny Depp would be playing 9 and Helena Bonham Carter would play whatever character Burton could find for 9 to make out with on camera.. fortunately, the rumors turned out to be only half-true and Burton is serving only as producer.. phew!!! the trailer looks great (seen it on the big screen twice now) and i think its getting a decent-enough response from audiences... i predict (and hope) that this will be bigBuscemi wrote:I've been excited for this ever since they first announced that they would be expanding the short into a film (I first saw the short in a complilation of Oscar shorts in 2006). Re: _____9_____
The film could do Coraline numbers but since this one will be more adult-oriented (I believe it's PG-13 though) and it's opening in early September, I'd say that $35-40 million is the ceiling.

I always get this confused with the Nicole Kidman/Kate Hudson/Fergie musical of the same name coming out later this year.

Re: _____9_____
That's Nine, as in the word but expect The Weinstein Company and Rob Marshall to rename it before it opens (I'm expecting the film to be renamed to Nine and a Half, as a homage to Fellini's 8 1/2 and because it's based upon 8 1/2).

Re: _____9_____
Although that could be confused with 9 1/2, 9 1/2 minutes or 9 1/2 weeks....

But 9 1/2 Weeks isn't as recent, so they can get away with it.

Re: _____9_____
arg. i forgot Nine is coming out too.. that can't help things..
that's it? yikes.. i was thinking more in the range of $65-75M.. maybe i'm a delusional idealist in this case, but i feel like this movie has the potential to be far greater than Coraline could've ever been (Selick was limited by Gaiman's simplistic story.. Acker has free-reign to expand on the already-engaging little universe he's created)

Re: _____9_____
Remember that Coraline was a best selling children's novel while 9 is based upon a small animated short film not necessarily for children. The appeal was far greater and the release date was a better one (though 9's 9/9/9 gimmick could make for a nice opening day).

Re: _____9_____
Yeah, well, early September is a terrible spot for movies. It would take some serious chops to perform well, no matter how good it is.
Re: _____9_____
I think it looks quite intriguing, but yea that september slot wont do it any favors.

Re: _____9_____
As you probably may guess, the September release is a gimmick. I'm guessing the plan is that Universal is using the date to promote the film (similar to The Omen remake coming out on 6/6/6). But it could go either way.

Re: _____9_____
I have not seen that trailer and it looks astounding. I was only familiar with the original short. Good things can happen for this Acker dude if this movie works. And with having Timur and Burton as producers he is apparently getting some good help with his career.

Re: _____9_____
Buscemi I don't see why it would be rated PG-13 if Coraline was rated PG. There's no talking (at least not in the short), and nothing violent but the soul stealing thing will definately make it an edgy PG.

Considering there are voice actors (starring Elijah Wood), and there is talking in the trailer.. I'm gonna say this is not correct of the feature..

Re: _____9_____
The film is supposed to be dark and it's not really a kids' film. Also, it's being released under the Focus Features label and (other than Coraline) those films are usually PG-13 or R.

So what's that thing in the trailer, the big spider/robot with the red dot, that wasn't in the short film?

i didn't think this deserved its own thread, but here's an Oscar-nominated animated short from this year that I like:
