I just watched Casablanca for the first time -- and my immediate thought is that it holds up pretty damn well, even after almost 70 years.

Did you get to see Nick & Norah? I thought that was another great teen movie, although it would've worked no matter how old or young the leads were.

Good to see musical comedies get some appreciation. I saw this when it was first released on video and could not believe what I was seeing. I think I was laughing, or at least smiling, for the whole movie.

3.5, 3.0, 3.0. Nothing great nothing terrible.

Irreversible seems like your type of movie. I'm surprised that you only thought it was alright.

You would think so but the annoying camera work just got obnoxious. It was as if they watched Memento and Sunshine right before filming Irreversible. "Hey lets make the story flow backwards and then use a jittery camera to simulate the cutscene and make it intense."

I liked the story but the film just didn't perform in my mind. There was no real need for the film to be broken apart instead of linear and the whirring camera and flashing lights annoyed me. Went from a 3.5-4 to a 3 quick.

I watched Idiocracy earlier.

I love that movie. Genius!

I actually just finished it (as in, within the last 30 min). I really liked it. I came to the realization lately that he is one of my favorite directors, and my favorite director for the 2000's: Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, The Changeling, Gran Torino are all great movies, and most were the best movie of that year (got Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima on Blu-ray, but haven't watched them yet). He's making films now that are better than his films before, which were already (mostly) top-notch. Gran Torino is excellent, and kind of lingers with you afterward. It is especially fitting given the characters actions, in how it fits with Clint's main character types in the past. It's kind of like he puts what he's learned about things throughout his life into film. Definitely worth seeing. Both this and the Changeling will be in my top ten this year.

Good to know. I am hoping to see it when it goes wide this weekend.

Wimbeldon 5/10 - A bit cheesy but I really enjoyed it, even for only James McAvoy's goofy slacker brother character, plus I adore Paul Bettany... Unfortunately, would have been alot better with basically anyone but Kirsten Dunst as the female lead.

Watched a documentary called Cocaine Cowboys last night...9/10

Really interesting, fast-paced doc on the Miami Colombian cocaine trade in the late 70's, early 80's. Some of these people are so hardcore as to make Tony Montana look like NOTHING. Really informative and entertaining to watch. Highly recommended.

No I didn't see that one since I hated Juno and they apparently made it an anti-gay film (I read somewhere that Nick was originally going to be gay and had they kept that idea, you could have had a great film).

Umm... how the FUCK could the exact same film, with the exact same scenes and same dialogue, the only difference being "make the main character gay" make the film a great film???

My fav part of Idiocracy is the IQ test...almost fell over laughing so hard...

Something to the extent of: "If Gayle has a pail with 4 gallons of water, and Joe has a pail with 3 gallons of water, how many pails do they have?"

Great stuff...

So much for the 'indefinite' future of the boards. I'm glad we jumped ship before we were pushed now, it would have been a crying shame had we clung on until the bitter end to then have no back up plan ready and waiting. At least we took care of our own destiny rather than leave it to those who cared little for us or the orginality of the game.

I am the third category. I do appreciate the satire and find it redeeming. Redeeming in that I have been saying I think the world is slowly becoming retarded and it is nice to know that there are at least a few people who see it as well. Ahh I feel better.

Good to see we have a small fanbase for the movie.

And if you haven't seen I posted a thread about the missing message boards on FM. LOL It is called we do not exist. I was nice I promise. Twisted Evil

You know what especially find funny yet interesting at the same time about Idiocracy? The film is set in Texas (though a setting is never mentioned, it was shot in Austin) and Texas in a way could be the epicenter of stupidity right now.

watched the original Prom Night (finally).. whose terrible idea was it to film the ENTIRE movie like a Saved By The Bell dream sequence?? The cloudy camera lens made sense in the first scene--seeing as it is essentially a "flashback".. but why did it stick around? it was like watching bad 70s porn.. anyway, it was okay for historical value and definitely worth watching for the van that explodes mid-air as it tumbles off the side of a cliff.. i also like how Leslie Nielsen simply disappears in the second half of the movie.. (despite not being the killer or involved in any of the crazy antics going on in the plot).. in summary, it comes off dated and its "scares" don't hold a candle to even mediocre modern horror, but if you're a fan of the genre, you gotta see it..

watched a couple episodes of Big Love.. i see the draw (and it has GREAT casting), but TV drama simply doesn't interest me.. Lost is about as close as I get--and that doesn't count.. Band of Brothers would be the sole exception, but I view miniseries more along the lines of extended movies rather than short tv series..

Austin is the 5th most educated city in America...

http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/departments/elearning/?article=educatedcities

edit: it's also ranked as the 10th "greenest" city as well:

maybe it's just relative. perhaps Austin is on SUCH a plateau that, had it been constructed between Harvard and Yale, even those ivy league kids would look like a bunch of cousin-kissin' banjo players... that's one theory anyway..

So for every Mike Judge and Richard Linklater (from Austin), there's a Jessica Simpson (not from Austin)?
