Wow, is right about The Lovely Bones. I tried to read the book, but was having a hard time. Maybe after the movie I will.

Can't wait to see what Peter Jackson will do with this.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 Sony / Columbia 7/24/09 7/31/09 Did this really need a re-make? I mean come on, it was an okay film that no one saw the first time. What the hell makes them think anyone would want to see it now. Hi-jacking a subway car was a pretty stupid idea in the 70's. It looks even more lame today.

Here are a couple additional date changes, only one of which has relevance for the current season:

Miss February (working title) moves from 2/20/09 to 3/13/09.
Ridley Scott's 'Nottingham' moves from 11/6/09 to sometime in 2010.
The Wolfman moves from 4/3/09 to 11/6/09, presumably taking the slot Nottingham had (both films are from Universal).
Fast and Furious moves from 6/12/09 to 4/3/09. From potential summer blockbuster (I say that tongue-in-cheek..ly?) to the dead of April. Ouch.

Wolfman's move is a great one. The first (potentially) big film of the winter season, provided a truck load of good things happen between now and then. But F&F giving up almost a sure $100M for an April releases? WTBF is that? (B for "bloody")

And so much for the novelty of having Miss February opening in, you know, February. Not that that story matters much, it's basically "The Hosue Bunny" for guys.

It looks like that they'll go back to the original title of Playboys. I've read the plotline to Miss February/Playboys and it sounds like Sex Drive more than anything. Plus it's Fox Atomic which is a box-office poison label and there are no stars so I wouldn't be surprised if it were a quiet dump or a DTV release.

Maybe 'summer' movie season is encroaching further upon spring; maybe we're just mis-interpreting these moves as giving up when really this and Disney moving Hannah Montana up are just trying to capitalize on an otherwise weak April? I'm not sure I really buy that myself, but maybe it has some substance?

There aren't really any stars to Playboys but Craig Robinson is listed, and I find him pretty funny. Probably not a major role though. Same thing with Cedric Yarbrough; great in Reno 911 but probably a minor role here. The people who ARE starring, though, have this sketch comedy group called The Whitest Kids U Know, and some of their stuff is actually really hilarious. Don't know if this is the same kind of humor, though, and if it will translate to the big screen.

Not to dispute the level of quality in films that are produced and/or released by Fox Atomic, but do keep in mind that as a subsidiary company, they have far more modest goals and generally stick to genre and niche films -- horror, teen comedy, etc. They'll never say no to more, but typically Fox Atomic is aiming for box office takes of between 30 and 50 million. Modest in the greater scheme of things, but lifeblood that helps keep the parent company alive. Lower risk and lower yield but usually profitable. Sony does the same thing with it's 'Screen Gems' (hardy har har) division and Warner used to do it with New Line.

I was thinking the same thing as mr I. The studios are trying to lengthen the summer box office. This april has a few potential blockbusters, and i read that Iron Man 2 was going to open the last weekend in april in 2010.

New Movers and Shakers courtesy of FilmJerk:

Dance Flick (Paramount Pictures): Out February 6, 2009. In August 14, 2009

Bousch says: This change surprised me since the trailer has been running for the last month and the late Winter spot seemed pretty good. Now this actually gives Push a change of getting one Top 5 point (despite what all you guys say, Push is a bonafide flop).

Daybreakers (Lionsgate): In September 11, 2009

Bousch says: This looks like the first film to be coming out to cash in on the success of Twilight. Though the film looks to promise lots of vampires (and blood, as the directors' previous film Severance showed), I don't see people coming in droves this time around. It's opening in the dead month of September and last time I checked, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe really can't open films. I'll say one Top 5 point and it dies until the DVD release.

Jennifer's Body (Twentieth Century-Fox): In September 18, 2009

Bousch says: Sure Diablo Cody and Megan Fox are big right now (though I don't understand why since Cody ripped off Knocked Up, changed the ages and attracted a gullible public while Fox can't act to save her life), I see this being a huge flop. The reasons: horror comedy hasn't sold since the 1980's, Fox has never been the lead in a film, it's opening in a period where a horror film is opening almost every week and it's being produced by the Fox Atomic label who hasn't had a hit since, well, ever. Expect this film to be one the year's biggest disappointments both criticially and financially.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (Columbia Pictures): Out July 24, 2009. In June 12, 2009

Bousch says: Finally a film opening on June 12th that could actually do something. The Proposal should do decent numbers but Nowhereland and Hangover will both fail miserably in Summer (September would be better spots for both films). As for the film, Tony Scott has a good track record with audiences (not so much with critics) and both Washington and Travolta draw well. It will definitely open at Number 1 on opening weekend assuming the schedule stays the same.

Does anyone see why they needed to re-make this movie in the first place? I mean I liked it when it first came out, but it's not one that I sit around and talk about like it was a great piece of cinematic art or even a cult classic. It was pretty much an early 70's throwaway movie that even the actors that were in it probably barely remember. And haven't they already re-made this movie? I believe it was called Money Train.

Re: New Dates (December 19th)

Post by Buscemi on Wed Dec 31, 2008 8:29 pm

Here's the thing: people don't really care if it's an unneeded remake or if they're heard of the original. Gone In 60 Seconds was a little-known film from the 1970's (actually, it's one of the best car chase films ever made but it's still not very well-known) that became a terrible remake with Nicolas Cage. Even though the original wasn't that well-known, the remake still managed to be a blockbuster. Same things with some other remakes (such as The Lake House for example).

Audiences just want their stars, their action sequences and entertainment. It's going to be a hit.

Re: New Dates (December 19th)

Post by A_Roode on Thu Jan 01, 2009 1:48 am

The age old debate about remakes. I've mellowed in my stance about them which used to be utter revulsion. I don't mind the foreign language remakes because you swear some people are allergic to subtitles and so deprive themselves of remarkable cinema from the non-english speaking part of the world. A remake of those films caters to an audience of isolationists, but at least gives them the chance to see things beyond their own limitations.

My feelings about remaking films in general are starting to head in the same direction. If the original film was garbage but at least had an intriguing idea then a remake or a reboot is a great way to potentially cover the same material and do a much better job in the execution. If the remake is of a good or a great film, then I charitably view it as bringing an awareness of the original into the consciousness of a more general and casual movie-going public. We're terminal film geeks and will rail on about remakes ruining everything but I don't mind if more people start to love the same movies that I do too.

Yet another move:

Roland Emmerich's 2012 has been moved from July 10th to November 13th, now going up against Sherlock Holmes and The Tooth Fairy.

Bad move, IMO. Nobody wants a mindless disaster film in the fall when the Oscar films start rolling out. Especially since it's going to be basically The Day After Tomorrow 2.

i dunno, i really liked the original.. i'd say its biggest shortcoming is the fact that it comes off a bit dated nowadays.. in my mind, that makes it a primo pick for a movie to be remade.. unfortunately, i'm just not sure if Tony Scott has the potential to improve upon the original.. at best, we might get something comparable.. in which case, sure--let's take it.. i mean, no skin off our backs.. and we might even get something worth watching..... maybe

I love the original, it's a great crime caper, and I would only say it's dated in that it's part of its time in style and grimy-ness, much like All the President's Men was. I have no faith in this remake. Firstly, tony Scott is one of the most superficial and vacuous directors around. He's like Oliver Stone without the politics, which means he's just bland. I think True romance and Man on Fire would be a lot better if he hadn't directed them.

What I liked about the original was Matthau's character, the reluctant hero, an archetype of New York that manages to be engaging and wry at the same time. I don't think Denzel can pull that off. You could argue that the film will go for something else, something different, but Matthau's dry wit was what made it different, so I just know the remake will be a generic and bland crime thriller, with Denzel on autopilot, playing the wily detective...... Zzzzzzzzz

That said, it may have potential to do well in the summer, maybe 75mil

Yeah, it's pretty bizarre, but you just know Herzog hasn't seen or cares about the original, and will be too busy trying to get across his own point, whatever that may be. This will be an interesting addition to the never-ending remake debate, as I guarantee you that if you watch the two films back to back, they'll be nothing like each other.
