Sony Is REALLY Pushing 2012!

Post by BanksIsDaFuture on Sun Sep 27, 2009 1:55 pm

Apparently, Sony is doing something unprecedented in their efforts to get people to see the latest explode-athon, 2012. They will be conducting a "roadblock" ad on 450 TV stations nationwide on Oct. 1st. What that means is that anybody watching TV between 10:50 and 11:PM Thursday night will be forced to watch a two minute clip of 2012, no matter what! This is has been done before, but only on one station and it's immediate affiliates (sp?). For example, Universal would do it with Couples Retreat on NBC (since they're both owned by GM) and the lesser NBC channels, like Bravo and whatnot. But across almost all networks at the same time? Craziness...

Unrelated but - I've got access to a shit-ton of Whip It! tee shirts and was wondering if you guys wanted some. They've got sizes S-XL, they're pretty cool but they're free so can't beat that. Just trying to spread the wealth... Very Happy

That is absurd. Sony apparently really wants 2012 to do well.

I got you guys the shirts, if you want to PM me your addresses, that would be fine.

As far as S&H, if it's more than a dollar or two, don't worry about it. But I'll let you know when I send them.

Yea, i've all of sudden seen lots of advertising around for 2012. Posters with red painted words over them 'we were warned' 'how will you survive' etc. Its kinda cool actually, but it makes it seem more horror-ish than it probably is.

How will this bode for The Road, which opens two weeks later? Will two films about the apocalypse co-exist or will one of them get killed?

The Road doesn't have a whole lot going for it IMO...whereas 2012 has blockbuster written all over it.
Of course, the road will likely be a much better film.

No, now I don't see The Road performing well. It moved into the absolute worst spot it could have where it will be drowned by much more mainstream films. In October, it would have had a good chance. Also it would have a decent chance if it opened limited and is actually good.

This next part is more about a conversation in the chatroom with Buscemi a couple of weeks ago.

With that said, The Road is not about the apocalypse and if you had read the book let someone explain this to you, then you wouldn't come off as ignorant. Not just this point, but several others. I'm just not a fan of when people come off as ignorant a-holes who know nothing of what they're talking about and try to trash something that you actually do know something about. I don't know if this film is going to be true to the book, but if it does, it will be good. If its made about the apocalypse (which wasn't in the book), it will probably be not so great. If its made about a father-son relationship in an anarchic

wasteland, it should be a good one.

Exactly why it won't perform well...today's audience doesn't want to see what happens AFTER the apocalypse...They want to see the apocalypse itself.

The spot its in is horrible for it. If it were released in October or if its quality is good enough for a late December limited release I think it could do $30-50 M. As is... They killed it. Though I'll still be there.
