Keyser Soze's 1000th post

Post by Keyser Soze on Mon Aug 31, 2009 7:09 pm

Wow, 1,000 posts. Hard to believe that one year ago at this time I didn't even know the message boards existed over at the site that continues to remain nameless. I only heard about them when one day on the front page they made mention of how many posts there were in the message boards pertaining to a little upcoming movie called Twilight. Since I knew that my wife was fanatical about Twilight, I figured I'd check out what was being said especially since I had it on all of my slates. Lo and behold, not only did I find that there was a message board relating to prety much every topic imaginable. I didn't do much contributing in those final days of the old place, but I sure am glad that I found the boards or I'm not sure I would have ever found about this place.

This is really only the second bulletin board (For lack of a better term) type place that I have ever belonged to, the first being one that pertained to original comic art, and let me tell you I have participated a lot more here than I ever did there. Why? Because I think the caliber of people that we have here makes this place someplace special. Do I know everyone that well or get along with everyone all the time or even agree with everyone's opinions all the time, No, and for that I'm glad.(OK, maybe not so much the part about not knowing everyone that well). If we all got along or shared the same opinions about everything, it would be a pretty boring place, but the one thing I have found is that there are different folks here who I do share the same opinions and likes with about so many different things.

Shryke - I'm pretty sure had we grown up near each other, we definitely would have been hanging out. The fact that our ages are so similar and our tastes in movies and music (Two of things that Rob Gordon in High Fidelity considered to be uber important in life) tells me we definitely would have been hanging out, and if Leestu wasn't half a planet away, I've got to believe we would have run into each other at many, many concerts.

Surf and Roode - You guys would be my comic book brethern. Nice to know I'm not the only out there who shares a liking of some good motion pictures and quality funny books.

Donte and Geez- Not sure we would have hung out much, but damn I'd love to sit down and pound some beers with you guys one night (Probably about all this old man could handle).

Boosh - For as much as we disagree, I can't deny that I see a hell of lot of my younger self in you.

W and Barca - First off, thanks to both of you for providing this place in the first place. I wouldn't be typing post # 1,000 right now if not for all of the hard work and dedication you guys put into starting and maintaining this wonderful site.

Six - I don't always agree with your opinions on certain movies, but I know your reasons are always well thought out and very insightful, and for some reason, I always feel a little better when our opinions do agree.

I really don't mean to leave anyone out of this love fest, and I'm sure there are some I've forgotten like Banks, UDM and Transformers, but that doesn't mean that I don't read your posts and enjoy them too.

I can't tell you guys how much I love playing the Box Office game and some day I hope to actually win a monthly game or a Super Contest, but as long as I can be competitive, it will continue to be fun for me (No matter how much it annoys the wife or draws giggles from friends who say, "You play a fantasy movie game???" I want to say thanks to everyone of you who take the time to write posts that help me make my selections every month. You certainly are under no obligation to write them, but this is just to let you know that there is at least one person out there who truly appreciates all of the help he can get even if he hasn't seemed to use that info too well.

Looking forward to my next 1,000 posts (Even if no one else might be Very Happy )

I never expected to hear that from you, Keyzer. And for that, I thank you.

By the way, what was life like in 1982?

Life back in 1982 was pretty damn sweet. Disco was dead, and orignal punk was turning into 80's alternative which to me is still the best genre there is. The world was a bit less complicated as the Cold War was coming to a close and there seemed to be a lot more optimism for the future than there is now. The recession of the 70's was becoming a distant memory and it was the start of the go-go 80's. Some great movies were showing up every Summer, and I still had 3 more years of college before I had to face the real world

I wish I had lived in the 1980's. The politics seemed a little iffy but everything else seemed fantastic.

Also, the cinemas were a genre fan's dream that summer.

Congrats mate. Thanks for the kind words, and i'm sure you are one of the posters who alot of people look forward to the next 1000 posts from.

Although, I can't fucking believe i'm gonna be the last one to cross the 1000 post mark from the 'regulars' eventhough I had a head-start on everyone. Shocked

Yes, the politics were a bit iffy, but they really were a necessity of the times. You can find all of the bad you want about Reagan, but he did bring the Cold War to an end, and had you had to live through it in the 60's and 70's, you would know what a great thing that was to do. Also, I'm pretty sure if you ask the folks of the former Eastern Bloc countries, they'll tell you what a great thing it was too.

Thanks Barca, and I'm sure if we ever found ourselves in a bar, we'd have plenty to discuss whether it be movies or the EPL Vs. the Spanish First Division. (Can you tell I'm still bitter about your win over Chelsea last Spring?) On the other hand, I am pulling for a big Barca win tonight Vs. Sporting Gijon(That match is on ESPN's Streak game)

You realize that you were in college when I was born? When you were playing records and 8-tracks, did you ever think that music would shrink in size until it was basically just a blip on a computer? Well, as long as you feel younger than you are...

And another staple of the 80's:

Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down a road and back again
Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off, won't you stand up and take a bow

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
Thank you for being a friend

Also, Reagan helped pull us out of an economic downturn with Reaganomics. Before then, taxes were so high that it wasn't worth it to work after you made a certain amount of money, so people didn't. I fear that's happening again, but I hope not.

Anyways, politics in any era are iffy. Bush was iffy, Clinton was iffy, Bush Sr. was iffy, Reagan was iffy, Carter was so much of an idealist that his administration turned out to be iffy. I don't think I have to tell you that Ford and Nixon were iffy. Hell, even Lincoln was iffy as he curttailed personal freedoms...

Good is as much a judgment call as anything else.

Yeah, they really were. Not sure why, but it seemed like back then it more about making a good movie rather than making a good trailer in order to have a good OW.

And, yes I did. I have now seen all 4 Terminator movies in the theater. First movies I have any recollection of seeing in the theater were Willy Wonka and a Bond double feature of You Only Live Twice and Goldfinger. First movie I can actually remember having to stand in a line for was ET. If you can believe it, there was no line when I went to see Star Wars, Jaws or even Raiders.

I saw The Terminator in a theatre back in 2008. It was a print from the original release with a THX/mono sound format.

Did you ever see Blade Runner or RoboCop in a theatre?

Saw them both. There probably isn't a science fiction movie released from 1974 on that I haven't seen in the theater. My dad was a true sci-fi fanatic having read practically every (And I'm not exagerating here) science fiction book ever written up until his death in 1992. Most of them were paperbacks, but there were quite a few first edition hard backs which I still have including Dune and 2001.
