G.I. Joe doesn't suck?

Ok so as shocking as this may be G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is currently sitting at 91% on rotten tomatoes with only 1 rotten review out of 11 (RT claims there are 2 rotten reviews and a 82% rating but I only see 1). This is a movie I was expecting to end up with something under 20%. This was even rumored to be one of the worst movies of the summer...maybe even ever. The reviews are so encouraging im beginning to think it could pull off a suprise just like Transformers. The reviews are pretty fantastic so far so lets see how well it can hold this rating.

Meanwhile Julie and Julia is only posting a 64% fresh rating after 11 reviews. Streep is said to be in top form but dont expect this to be the next Devil Wears Prada.

Also District 9 is sitting at 100% after 8 reviews some of them calling it one of the best films this summer.

Maybe the dumping period of summer hasnt began just yet

fanboy whores or not they are still solid reviews. In fact fan boys are probably the ones who would attack the movie the most. Given its pre release buzz this is a good sign

I'm guessing the anticipation was so low for the movie that when it actually turned out to be a little fun (besides the woeful acting) they were so shocked they disregarded its failings (the absolutely diabolical acting).

Let's just say.... I don't think Marlon Wayans and Sienna Miller will be doing anything special come Oscar night 2010.

Because this is Oscar bait? How many top summer blockbusters get nominated for Oscars? If its a "fun" enough movie, it'll take off financially. If not, it'll barely get to $100 M

I'm not suggesting this type of movie is Oscar bait, just that the standard of acting is not its high point. Don't get me wrong, its a fun ride and that's to be admired, especially considering the downer everyone seemed to be on leading up to the release, and its much better than the behemoth which has taken over this summer. I see it performing similar to Wanted, which is a lot better than a few were predicting a month ago I'm sure.

I wonder how much good word of mouth it will receive though? Even though it's turned out to be quite fun, I know a lot of guys who have already got a bad taste in their mouths just from the trailers, thinking this is the new Street Fighter/ Mortal Combat movie. I don't know how much persuading it will take to get some of them to change their minds. I certainly couldn't change the other half and my brother in law's minds...

Well a lot of the ones on Rotten Tomatoes are niche publications, and definitely appeal more to the fanboy world than the general public. There's very few broader mainstream reviews up (in fact I think press preview screenings are being with-held, which is never a good sign). The only broad (ish) one I've seen is Empire, who gave it 2/5.
GI Joe still seems to me to be a film that will get an impressive opening (40 mil) due to curiosity/nostalgia/ Transformers associations/ action/ Sienna Miller in skin tight costume, but plummet from bad WOM

im sure that it will probably have G.I Joe doing about 40million, but i have a feeling this is going to be either a huge hit or a huge flop.

I listened to a radio spot for G.I. Joe earlier and the only review mentioned was the AICN review. Not good.

Also, they used a Kid Rock song in the ad. Honestly, I don't know which is worse.
