Shrykespeare's Slightly-Better-Than-Banks's 1000th Post Thread!
Well, it didn't take me nearly as long to hit the 1,000-post mark here at it did back on old FM, and now that the milestone has been crossed, I'm not really sure what I can say that I haven't already said many times before.
I will say this... now that my finances seem to have taken a turn for the (much much) better, and what with airline prices being sold at a record-low for this millennium, I am not above doing some traveling. If anyone out there would like me to come visit their fair city in late 2009 or 2010 (sorry, Chien, I'll probably have to stay within the US), and would like to show me the local sights (read: the nearest movie theater followed by a sports bar/steakhouse), let me know. I'm not asking you to pay my way or put me up, but I think it's time I met some of the guys that have brought so much to my life.
If I had unlimited amounts of money, I would buy all of you a plane ticket, and invite you all to some big shindig in a really swanky hotel or convention center, where we could all sit around, drink our favorite beverage, and banter back and forth about the past, present and future of show business (at least until the SWAT team has to be called in when geezer and Buscemi get into a dustup about the truly misunderstood genius that is Megan Fox). (Note: I'm just kidding. Kind of.) Oh well, I can dream, can't I?
In a perfect world, this game, where cinema geeks reign supreme, would be cooler than fantasy sports, more sought-after than the Ark of the Covenant and more gratifying than autoerotic asphyxia... er, online poker. Yeah, that's what I meant to say. We would all be revered as gods among men, with hot babes aplenty clamoring to massage us with oils of olives and nibble at the pointed bits at the top of our ears, but alas, that day may never come. But as long as there is a Fantaverse, I will always be a part of it. Until my bones are brittle and my hair goes down the same drain as my teenage rock-star fantasies, I will be here.
I thank every higher power that may or may not exist every single day for each and every one of you.
Thanks again, to all of you.
Peace.
Let the roast, complete with unsettlingly-appopriate illustrations, begin!

What is he thinking posting before you?!?! j/k
Its almost been 8 months, that's 1,250 a year. So you're going at a much faster rate than at the "we do not speak their name though they advertise on our new website" site. Also, you have to do more here (well, you don't HAVE to, but we wouldn't be here if you didn't) and each time you put up updates you get 10 posts plus your tips count as a post and your replies to your tips count as a post. So that explains it somewhat (have to do more + more things count as posts)... Even with that factored in, practically everyone is more involved here because of you (and the fact that we can do more stuff here than we could in the old country).
If you want to see the sites of Terre Haute some time, I'd be happy to show you the sites. But not next weekend because the Jonas Brothers are in town. Being a full-time dad now with no car (at the moment), right now probably isn't a great time, but later in the year, beginning of next year may be fine. We can visit THS's theater...

I couldn't put the money together in time this year, but next year it's Rocklahoma, woo hoo! Donte and I are putting on the Devil's Horns for four days of heavy metal thunder, right Donte? Maybe we can get Tranny to sacrifice his first year of tuition and come along too.
However as I know your musical tastes are a little more subdued, let me say instead that there will always be an open invitation for you to come to Nova Scotia. The only sand we've got is on the beach, we've got the highest tides in the world, we've got a glorious road trip full of photo-ops in the Cabot Trail and Cape Breton and I live 15 minutes from an 18 theatre megaplex that is surrounded by steakhouses. What more could a man ask for? And like I said, no expiry on the invite.
Thanks for being the glue that keeps us all together here.

Re: Shrykespeare's Slightly-Better-Than-Banks's 1000th Post Thread!
I'm still a kid who lives with his parents, so I don't have any money to visit.
As for Springfield, it's a pretty boring place unless you like 70 Wal-Marts, 100 McDonald's and 50 Taco Bells in one area. I actually live in the suburb of Nixa, which is even more boring than Springfield unless you like more Wal-Marts, McDonald's and Taco Bells.
Here are the Pros and Cons of Springfield:
Pros
-a minor league baseball stadium
-five theatres (three multiplexes, one art house with two screens and a second run eightplex)
-Artwalk every first Friday of the month
-the ongoing work to resurrect downtown Springfield
-Andy's Frozen Custard
Cons
-too many dumb and crazy people around
-too many McDonald's and Taco Bells around and not enough places that are actually good
-the minions from James River Assembly and the places trying to be them
-a million country radio stations and only one devoted to the other genres
-very little to do on the North Side
-corrupt politics
-no major IMAX theatres
-no great museums or planetariums (since the Pentecostals and Southern Baptists that run the town frown upon learning or arts)

Re: Shrykespeare's Slightly-Better-Than-Banks's 1000th Post Thread!
Terre Haute has a lot of those things but some differences:
- The worst college football team ever instead of a minor league stadium.
- Square Donuts instead of Andy's frozen custard.
- Possibly the most restaurants per capita of anywhere since we have the intersection of 41 and 70.
- Decent history (Dillenger, William Henry Harrison, Underground Railroad, Eugene V. Debs, Larry Bird).
- 4 theaters (2 are run down).
- A smell in the south of town that is extremely horrible and is one of the causes of the Smoky Mountains (I read it on a plaque in the Smokies).
- corrupt politics (our old mayor is suing our new mayor).
- Many McDonalds and Taco Bells (and Arby's and Burger Kings, and etc).
- One country station, one rock station, and one crock (country + rock) station.
- very little to do on the north side.
- no IMAX theaters.
- 2 bigger colleges (Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, Indiana State) and 2 smaller ones (Saint Mary of the Woods, Ivy Tech)

Back in the 1980's, there were some MSU grads who became successful actors. Nowadays, the most famous person to have spent time in the area is Ryan Howard (though he is from St. Louis, he went to college at Missouri State).

Wouldn't mind getting him in a Cardinals uniform. :) Maybe he'll take a paycut to join his hometown team? lol

Yeah I think that is unlikely as long as a guy you may have heard of named Albert is patrolling first base for the Cards
You are always welcome to trek up to Massachusetts. We have the Basketball Hall of Fame about 10 minutes from my house and 6 Flags is about 20 minutes away. And Boston is less than 90 miles away. Could do a two for one and get Tranny in on this madness as well.

always possible i also live with my parents clearly lol. But i would love to meet anybody thats wants to come through Swampscott its kind of a shitty town filled with rich douchebags [i am not a rich douchebag just to clarify] but other people seem to think its alright its only 20 min North of Boston and there are plenty of surronding cities with things to do its next to Salem. Congrats on the post Shryke and you are one of the leaders of this community and your a legned dude.
Roodey i would love to do to Rocklahoma next year if you and Donte i'll see if i can make the trek. That would a great time meeting you guys and going to a big ass metal show. There are a lot of other fest out there as well so maybe me can make it happen

Hey I forgot about my thread. Maybe I should actually answer some questions in there...
You can come to Columbus if you want. You can get into my theater for free, I could get you some posters or standee's and we can visit the first Wendy's ever built. Exciting, I know.

Shryke , Old man, any time you would like to trek on up to Pittsburgh, me and the Mrs. would be happy to show you around. We currently have the Lombardi Trophy and the Stanley Cup residing here, the nicest Tripple A baseball stadium in America (Also known as the place where the Pirates play), the Andy Warhol Museum, more movie theaters than you shake a light saber at (Including multiple Imax's and drive-ins). We also occasionally get some great 80's Alternative bands (Which I know you love) that come through here. The Mrs. and I just went to see The Church recently, and your hometown favorite the Gin Blossoms are playing a street fair here in 2 weeks. We have the best wings in the country at a place called The Quaker Steak and Lube as well as the best sandwich in the world at a place called Primanti Bros.
Southwest has some dirt cheap flights from your neck of the woods to here. I know because we've taken them to where you are before. So come on up any time (Call ahead for reservations), and we'll be happy to have you

I see the Primanti Bros shop all the time on Travel Channel food shows. Their reputation certainly upholds that statement, although I probably wouldn't eat there.

Hamilton, NJ is my stomping ground. It's less than an hour from Philly and NYC, has some decent nightlife, great historical sites, and is officially the restaurant capital of the united states. I know it like the back of my hand, and there's a tour with your name on it if you're interested in seeing New York's retarded little brother.

If you ever come anywhere near Arkansas, I am there. I am about 80 miles from Buscemi so it could be a combo.
Yes, Roodey, we need to see a hair metal extravaganza next year.
IP, we always stay in Jersey when we have our winter motorcycle show in NYC. North Bergan to be exact. What a dump and I have wandered drunkenly through the streets at night. Fun times.

Wow, you've given me so many options! I don't know where I'll venture to first... probably Austin, as it is not only geographically nearest to my home, but is also where Rick/Nico/Swedgin! lives, and I have wanted to meet him face-to-face for three years now. And now that I know that NSpan lives in that same area, we could have some Texas BBQ.
But I thank you all for your well-wishes, and I am making note of all of it.

You guys, I've decided I'm going to take the plunge. If things go the way I hope, I may venture down to Austin some time in October. NSpan has graciously agreed to show me around, and with any luck, Swedge will answer his phone long enough for me to invite him to the party, assuming he can make the three-hour-or-so journey from the greater Dallas area.
If my/our plans become more concrete, perhaps some of you Midwesterners can join us for the first-ever Fantaverse reunion. Hopefully the Texas heat won't be quite so bad in mid-autumn as it is now.
Watch this space as plans develop.
