Could it be the reverse fanboy effect? The fans of the original didn't like it as much as the average movie-goer (from what I've read), so it actually went up? #82 overall in the Top 250.

I think it's pretty stupid when a movie can make a list like that after 1 day.

I don't. Every movie is judged using the same formula. It is not unfair in any way. Time will tell where it ends up, but it has every right to be there as everything else. Probably more than some.

It's more deserving than The Fucking Prestige.

If its good enough, why not? I don't think its top 100, but maybe 250. I'd actually rather watch it again than The Dark Knight and practically every other film from the past couple of years, but I have seen TDK more times...

If you think that's bad, take a look at Yahoo's greatest rated films list: http://movies.yahoo.com/mvc/top10?lid=1

Kind of funny that I was on there rating films for the first time in a very long time and I come across that right now.

I always look at most list like that with a question mark. Hence why we need our own!

My main problems with The Prestige:

-Hugh Jackman is a damned idiot in the film and the whole time, it gets you to root for the villain (Christian Bale).
-Scarlett Johansson has little purpose in the film despite the advertising making her seem like she is one of the main characters. The much more beautiful and talented Rebecca Hall has a bigger purpose in the film but the advertising glossed over her completely.
-The whole "magic is fake" plotline. You can't do a film about magic where you try to disprove magic. That like making a Ghostbusters movie where ghosts are nonexistant.
-The CGI was not very convincing and the $80 million budget obviously doesn't show onscreen.
-Not enough David Bowie. David Bowie fucking owns!
-The Illusionist came out first (in the US, that is) and did a much better job of telling a story on a smaller budget and with better characters. Also, they actually made the magic seem real.

Valid points, I was upset with the "Magic if fake" concept after the first time I watched it. I watched it again, not looking forward to it, and I really liked it. But this was my reason for a movie making a top 100 so fast, with me anyway, a 2nd viewing is the most important.

The Prestige gets better and better with each viewing..

Boosh, i don't think all of your complaints with the movie are valid.. 1, christian bale isn't "the villain".. 2, how long can you criticize a movie for its advertising campaign--at a certain point, can't you just judge the movie for its own merit? 3, if you want a movie where "magic is real," there are plenty of movies like that.. this just isn't one of em, sorry.. 4, bad cgi is distracting, but i don't think it makes or breaks a movie (and i actually thought the prestige looked great visually).. 5, okay--i agree with 5.. 6, who cares if another movie is "better"? that argument can be made for every single movie ever made (except one, obviously).. and, for the record, the illusionist is NOT better than the prestige..

I liked The Illusionist more. A lot more. Pretty much for the exact reasons that Boussh mentioned.

Hate me now?

I liked both, own both. Both for completely different reasons, magic is the only thing they have in common. But it's funny how they always get talked about together.

Yes but I highly doubt that I would like both. I don't hate you shryke. We definitely have more in common in taste than Buscemi and I, but by no means are we identical, so it gives me no further motivation to watch it. Too many people have said it sucked.

I love a movie that completely blows me away with its ending the first time I watch it. The Prestige did that. And upon subsequent viewings, it still holds up even knowing the ending, which is a challenge.

I think that you would like Illusionist too. I think they have more in common than just the magic aspect. They are similar enough that I dont see how you can like one but hate the other. Though they are different enough to have two totally different movies.

Well clearly Buscemi loved one and hated the other, and I tend to hate everything he loves, and love everything he hates... but maybe I'll check it out sooner or later.

Re: Star Trek and Future Tracking (Updated with MTC)

Post by Shrykespeare on Sun May 10, 2009 11:28 pm

Box Office Mojo estimates:

Top 5:
1. Star Trek
2. Wolverine
3. Ghosts
4. Obsessed
5. 17 Again
(6. Next Day Air)

PTA:
5. Star Trek
4. Wolverine
3. Little Ashes
2. Adoration
1. Limits of Control

So it looks like Wolverine (down 68%) is going to be this season's Watchmen, and Rudo y Cursi is definitely not going to be another Sin Nombre. (Dammit...)
