Just listened to that Ataris song Synestro. Going back to a discussion from a few days ago, that is a much better version than Don's original. I liked it.

That's about how far I got in it too. It was so bad I didn't want to be the only one to watch some of it.

What the hell ever happened to Jamie-Lynn Sigler? I mean after leaving The Sopranos, she's hasn't been in anything noteworthy. Same with Drea De Matteo.

Erm, yes, back to some semblance of quality...

I'm not a big fan of overly sentimental, syrupy songs, but this one really strikes a chord with me. And I am a sucker for a rock song that incorporates bagpipes into itself in just the right way.

Several decades ago, there was an Australian group called the Little River Band, who were huge down under, but only achieved "fair" success outside their homeland, which is a shame. After the group broke up, the lead singer made an attempt at a solo career, but, again, never developed a fanbase outside of Australia. He put out a song in 1990 that I just loved, and I have all but forgotten until that prepubescent dweeb David Archuleta performed a cover of it on last year's American Idol.

The man's name is John Farnham, and he is, apparently still, a national treasure in Australia. Just look at the reception he gets at this performance in 2003 at the Sydney Opera House! This is my video pick for Sunday, December 7th.

Okay, another great French song for you guys. This one's in French, but I found a version with english subtitles so you can understand the great lyrics.
The clip, all animation, is beautiful.

This is one Chien will appreciate- a music video directed by Wong Kar Wai. It's DJ Shadow's Six Days, his last great song. Some very strong visuals

Hmmm, strange, it's still in Youtube put the video above says it can't be used. Copyright issues? Just visit here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZKeSNZhm18

Used to like those SNL Digital Shorts, but they got gradually worse. Besides, they're blatently ripping off Flight of the Conchords, who did a mock Pet Shop Boys video in their series (Inner City Pressure), but it was much funnier.

(Note to Chien: try the embed code instead of the address, it might work better.)

Never cared for Nada Surf much. They fall into that section of alternative music with King Missile and Bloodhound Gang and Butthole Surfers that I just don't really dig. I know a lot of music is supposed to be angst-y, but some of it is just stupid (to me).

And they don't get much more depressing than this (but God help me, I actually like this one):

No, no, no, no, no. No offence intended Shryke but he is looked upon as a joke down here by anyone under the age of 40, and a national treasure only to those over the age of 50 who don't know any better. I haven't checked out the video but are there lots of walking frames, grey hair etc everywhere? He has retired so many times now, and the last few were final permanent retirements, but he keeps letting us down and touring again.
But then again I like Nada Surf, Butthole Surfers and King Missile (well, maybe not King Missile) so...........

Now Jim Carroll is much better. Are you sure you didn't intend to use this introductory line 'Erm, yes, back to some semblance of quality...' to the Jim Carroll song. Do you know what I like about this song? Every time I hear it I laugh and feel moved both at the same time. A rare accomplishment indeed.

Re: THE MUSIC OF THE FANTAVERSE - THE EXTENDED TOUR

Post by Synestro on Mon Dec 08, 2008 6:56 pm

The absolute worst cover song ever in the history of music commits blasphemy to a (if not "the") rock n roll anthem. I am referring to Don McLeans American Pie. Madonna thought it would be good to put a bubble gum pop spin on while she shakes her titties in front of the American flag. I was surprised to find that some people had never listened to this travesty, and a friend of mine just last night told me that if I had told him that Glass Tiger had done a cover of Stairway to Heaven it would seem more acceptable. At any rate, I don't care what any of you throw out there, this is the worst cover ever.

ODG!!!! I thought the whole point of this was to share good stuff that we liked with each other not subject us to dreck like the previous 2 posts. Wow, those two wanted to make me take real long needles with big, sharp points and plunge them right into my eyes.

I like Weird Al's version of American Pie! Not really comparable to the original, though... I do think it was really inventive.

Well, damn. My (extraordinarly large) bad, leestu. Shows you how far out of the loop I am. No offense.

I would love to get an opinion on the Jim Carroll song by some our younger patrons, like transformers. I think it would be cool to get the take of someone still a teenager on this song that was written before they were born.
