Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
Yeah, I know, it's a morbid topic, especially coming so closely on the hells of Christmas and New Year's. Humor me.
I think the answers to questions like this reveal a lot about the respondent (though, perhaps, not so much as the questions, themselves, reveal about their posers).
Ordering / sequence matters.
For me, it's...
[1] "Castles Made of Sand" (Jimi Hendrix)
[2] "Brothers in Arms" (Dire Straits)
[3] "Release" (Pearl Jam)
[4] "Shenandoah" (Mormon Tabernacle Choir, from the Nixon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
[5] "Disenchanted" (For Squirrels)

3) Novio- Moby
4) In the Air Tonight- Phil Collins
5) The Show Must Go On- Three Dog Night

Re: Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
For me:
1. "Flying in a Blue Dream" by Joe Satriani
2. "Secret World" by Peter Gabriel
3. "Ben's Song" by Sarah McLachlan
4. "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode (my all-time favorite song)
I might throw something snarky or ironic in there, like something by Alice in Chains (Man in the Box, Dem Bones, Down in a Hole), or even Alice Cooper (School's Out!). Don't know yet.

Shrykester, it's actually sort of amazing to me how similar some of our tastes are. Satch, Gabe and Depeche are three faves, and "Enjoy the Silence" is a terrific track.
There's a song by Orgy, off Candyass I think, which goes, "...don't get lost / before I get found." Know that one? Seems like it might slip comfortably into your Number Five position.
I'm actually surprised no one's yet mentioned "Amazing Grace"...
Scotty would later be court-martialed for playing religious music in a demonstrably secular and tolerant Starfleet vessel

Re: Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
I feel like this is something I should have thought more about, but I really haven't. Regardless here are my picks:
The Beetles - Let It Be
Josh Groban - To Where You Are (or Remember when it rained, both very good)
Enya - May it be
Queen - Who wants to live forever
Antony & the Johnsons - Bird Girl
Alternates: MCR - Cancer, Keane - Atlantic
Edit: also, I want an invite to 6's funeral, it sounds like a bizarre one..

Re: Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
Wow, what an excellent topic right out of High Fidelity:
My choices:
1. (Unfortunately no video on You Tube) "Who wants to go to heaven" by Gene Loves Jezebel
2. Heaven - Psychadellic Furs
3. More than This - Roxy Music
4. Decided REM would be too cheesy so they've been replaced by
Tears - Chameleons UK
5. Going Underground - The Jam

Not a topic I've ever really given much thought to. I'll think about it and get back to you.

Re: Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
I think I would like Mogwai's Rock Action album playing but if I have to pick a few songs specifically they would be.
Low Man's Lyric - Metallica
Where is My Mind - The Pixies
2 Rights Make 1 Wrong - Mogwai
On the Turning Away - Pink Floyd
Such Great Heights - Iron and Wine
That sounds like a good playlist.
If I were in a dark humor mood, how about???
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Rubberband Man - The Spinners
The Roof is on Fire - The Bloodhound Gang (since I will be burned on a pyre or cremated)
Wonderlust King - Gogol Bordello
More Adventurous - Rilo Kiley (especially the line "I'd sacrifice money and heaven all for love.")

Re: Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
Coincidentally my wife and I were having a discussion along similar lines the other day. I have a habit of playing my music as loud as I can when driving, and the other day I was driving for a while, stopping at traffic lights etc, next to a hearse. This got us talking about wether our loud music was inappropriate. The end result was that we decided that at my funeral we will have loud music blaring from the hearse.
So for the song playing from the hearse as we arrive at the cemetery I choose Heaven Is A Halfpipe by OPM to represent my sense of fun and belief in tolerance.
To start the proceedings I would like Come As You Are by Nirvana playing whilst people are being seated.
Then during the ceremony Everybody Hurts by REM,
followed by Into My Arms by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
To finish I want the introduction to Miss Murder by AFI playing as the coffin goes into the crematorium oven thing (whatever it is called). If you don't know what I mean by 'the introduction to' Miss Murder it is the first 1.40 that features the line "Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep". It is played in the start of this video :-
Great question Swedgin.

Re: Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
Great to see all the responses, this is one of those "Who would you invite for a dinner party?" questions that always seems to get the conversation really moving.
I have three Honorable Mentions, btw:
"Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd (actually my favorite rock song of all time);
"Available Light" by Rush (a song by my favorite rock GROUP of all time); and
"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Eric Idle, from Monty Python's The Life of Brian.
"Summer Breeze" by Type O Negative ain't far off, either.
ETA: I oughtn't forget "White, Discussion" by Live. So, I reckon I've made out a Top Ten List of Funeral Songs, now. ...Shocking, ain't it?
Just remember that the last laugh is on you

Re: Five Songs You'd Like Played at Your Funeral
Alright, I've given it some thought and guess I'd go in two directions. My friends and family know I've got a wicked sense of humour and I hope they'd appreciate one final joke. I'd get them warmed up with a bit of a joke playlist first:
Winger - Easy Come Easy Go
Motorhead - Killed By Death
Guns n Roses - Don't Damn me
Cinderella -Don't Know what you got 'til it's gone
Europe -Final Countdown (as I'm being lowered into the dirt)
and maybe Lee Aaron and a badly out of context 'Whatcha do to ma body'
Honourable mention to Harem Scarem's 'Slowly Slipping Away,' Great White's 'Big Goodbye,' and the Blue Oyster Cult's 'Take Me Away.'
If I was being more serious though, I'd want songs that conforted my loved ones, and also maybe spoke to the things that I was about, felt, loved, dreamed, and on and on.
Sentimental jerk that I am, they'd know where I was coming from if I played:
Blue Rodeo - Hasn't Hit Me Yet
Andy Williams (yes, Andy Williams) - Home Lovin Man (go on, give it a listen)
Whitesnake - All I want, All I need
Queensryche - Silent Lucidity
The Beatles - Hey Jude
