The New and Un-Improved Rant Thread

Post by W on Fri Apr 10, 2009 8:35 am

Ok, so someone suggested a rant forum, but this seems easier. Rant in here about people, movies, everyday life, or anything else.

I'll start out, though its really something that annoys my wife since I don't eat meat well done: We go to a restaurant (Cracker Barrel today) and she orders meat (ham) well done and has to add the phrase "on both sides" or they will only cook one side and assume you don't look at the other side. So, she gets it and one side is black (which is ok for her) but the other side is completely raw (though its cured, so it's actually "cooked" beforehand). She sent it back and got a blacker side, but the other side is still the same.

Ok, one from me. We go to Bob Evans (I hate it, but its free--for me) and see that they have iced coffees. I love iced mochas, but they only have French Vanilla and Hazelnut. So, I ask if they could make one using chocolate sauce instead of the other; Its just coffee, milk, ice, and chocolate--all of which they have. She checks and says they can't make it then brings me a coke. I doesn't take a degree, though a lot of the people that work there are on their way down that road since its just down the road from ISU. What happens when they get their business or teaching degree? Do they automatically get some common sense?

I literally have at least 50-100 resta-rants.

You wanna know what pissed me off.. I'm playing online poker.. I'm second highest chips on a 9 player table. It is a 4800 player tourney with a 7,500 grand prize for first place. It payed over $1000 for the first ten spots.

Anyway, we are down to the last 200 and i get AQ suited, i am the 4 away from the guy with the big blind. Two people call, two people fold. I raise to 4 times the big blind, everyone folds except one person.

The flop comes, it's Ad, Qc, 9h. None from my suit (i had Spades). Basically, i've hit top two pair on the flop, the straight looks out of the question, and there's no sign of a flush. So i check, waiting to see what the other guy will do. He decides to bet half his pot, i re-raise and put myself all in (he was chip leader).

He opens his cards and he has a fucking 3,6 suited Hearts. I thought YAY this is mine..

Turn - 5h
River - Jh

I felt like killing the fucker. Who goes all in with a flop like that with a fucking 3,6 suited? It's not like he was even on a fucking flush draw, he needed a runner runner flush.

Fuck him, and fuck all the fish around the world.

/rant.

I hate it when people say massive as mahoosive. In fact, I hate it when people add syllables to words altogether.

I have a billion poker rants as well... Basically all of them start out "I'm doing well and I'm absolutely in the lead" then they suck out.

Re: The New and Un-Improved Rant Thread

Post by NSpan on Wed Apr 22, 2009 4:44 am

just read Shryke's latest column.. insightful, as always.. one small thing irked me though.. and my quibble isn't even with Shryke or his column itself (which is why i'll put this here in the "rant" section instead of as a reply to his thread).. it's more with how box office results are portrayed in the media in general.. anyway, here it is:

Shrykespeare wrote:Last year there were plenty of huge hits (Iron Man, Indiana Jones, Hancock, Wall-E), plenty of surprise hits (Sex and the City, Mamma Mia!, The Strangers), and quite a few major disasters (Speed Racer, Prince Caspian, The Love Guru, Meet Dave, The Clone Wars).
obviously, expectations play a big part in what movies we consider successes or failures.. and the original Chronicles of Narnia certainly set the bar high for a sequel, but let's look at the domestic numbers on these "disasters":

Speed Racer: $43M
Prince Caspian: $141M
The Love Guru: $32M
Meet Dave: $11M
Clone Wars: $35M

which one doesn't fit?

heck, it made $419M worldwide.. it's not quite (two of the "huge hits" listed:) Wall-E's $534M or Iron Man's $582M international grosses--but it's not that far off either.. heck, it surpassed two of the "surprise hits" listed: Sex and the City ($415M worldwide) and The Strangers ($81M worldwide)..

expectations aside, we could look at it in terms of budget vs. worldwide gross:

Speed Racer: $120M Budget / $93M Worldwide Gross
Prince Caspian: $200M Budget / $419M Worldwide Gross
The Love Guru: $62M Budget / $40M Worldwide Gross
Meet Dave: $60M Budget / $50M Worldwide Gross
(Box Office Mojo doesn't list budget info on Clone Wars)

out of these "disasters," all of them failed to make their money back... except Prince Caspian--which doubled its money.

i know this argument mirrors what i've been saying about Watchmen recently... and I know I said something similar when Prince Caspian
was still a relevant topic.. but, i gotta say it again: not every movie is a major, mind-boggling success or a cringe-worthy jaw-dropping
bomb.. there's a whole spectrum of box office "success".. obviously, hyperbolic statements make good headlines, but i think our little
Fantaverse is above that.. on top of the fact that the world of "entertainment news" is surprisingly competitive--forcing its
"reporters" to scrape a bit extra for newsworthy events--a lot of the reporting is shaped by vested interests.. the portrayal of any given
movie's box office results is often skewed to make things look better or worse depending on who is writing the article.. but, for the sake
of our little movie game, the sensationalism isn't necessary.. let's just talk hard numbers.. and if we're talking about success/failure in terms of the in-game pricing, i even won a league (or two) with Caspian on my slate.. and, heck, i won a Super League with Watchmen on my slate.. i can't imagine the same could be said for Speed Racer.......................unless it was a Bankrupts League

comparing Caspian (or Watchmen) to Speed Racer is like comparing Desert Storm to WWII in terms of casualties..

Agreed with all your stuff you said there! Not to mention I really liked Prince Caspian, It was in top 15 of my favorite of 2008, maybe even Top 10. Which is why I was really irked that Disney dropped the franchise, and dont even get me started on Fox picking it up. It seems like everything that Fox touches turns to dust

Unless it's called Star Wars or Titanic.

People still don't understand The Clone Wars. It was never meant nor expected to be a traditional Star Wars film. It was a lead-in child's cartoon show. A glorified television show if you will. I doubt it lost money in the long run considering it was used to test out the show.

I'm ashamed to say that I liked The Clone Wars. Even saw it on opening day.

I liked that little Huttlet. I want a Huttlet.

Post by Donte77 on Wed Apr 22, 2009 10:57 pm

Hey I have a work related rant which is related to my belief that 90% of the world's population need to be snuffed out.

This guy orders some product from us and then decides he doesn't want it. It is within our return policy time frame so we create a return authorization (or RMA) for the guy. We tell him his RMA number is X. This guy then writes RMA # X on the product and hands it to his postal carrier. The carrier looks at him like he is crazy and the guy doesn't know why. Apparently this guy thought that an RMA number magically whisked the product back to us on wings of pixie dust. He didn't put the stuff in a box, didn't have an address for the return, just wrote the number on the product and assumed the postal carrier would handle it.

So my question is;

How in the fuck do people this fucking stupid survive into adulthood?!?! Shouldn't this dumb fuck have fallen off the roof or drowned in the bathtub before he was old enough to breed his defective genes back into the pool?

This is the type of person that I want to ride motorcycles, except that he needs to ride them very fast in traffic without a helmet.

And yes I do handle customer service, why do you ask?

My rant: Watching the news here in St. Louis and they're talking about putting a smoking ban in the city limits. Where will it end. I don't smoke, used to, haven't for years. But I hate that everyone is targeting smokers as the anti-christ and it's our job to get them to stop smoking. What do we do for people with DWI, nothing, they are allowed to drive to a bar, get shit faced and drive home. Yet a smoker can't even take a 15 minute break from work and enjoy a smooth smoke because it's offending to many people. Ahhhhh.....when will people stop trying to control what other people do and think. Again I'm not a smoker but give them a break, we just raised there prices to over $5.00 per pack. Let that set in before we start telling them all the places they can't smoke.

I'm somewhat of a smoking ban expert, at least in the East, I don't really know the crazy stuff they do in California. My wife is allergic to smoke (red, watery eyes, headache, etc) and she passed that on to my daughter. Smoking bans usually ban it in certain places. In Florida and Georgia you can't smoke in restaurants. Here, you can't smoke in restaurants UNLESS they have a seperate room with a door that closes. You can still smoke on your break, in your car, at your house, etc, but you have to go outside if you're in a public place. The only thing excluded are places where kids aren't allowed. So, a bar can do whatever the Hell they want, but a bowling alley can't. Bars inside a bowling alley can be smoked it.

I don't see why its much of a problem. Our Pizza Hut was a 25 x 25 foot room and 12.5 by 25 feet of it was smoking with nothing dividing the two, so people would sit next to you since they're in the smoking area and you aren't you feel like you sucked on an exhaust pipe before you were done. Personally, I believe you should be able to do whatever the hell you want to as long as it doesn't harm others. That hurt others, so it was fixed. Some don't like it, but the number of people that do like it far outnumbers those that don't. My take on it.

Re: The New and Un-Improved Rant Thread

Post by packpaljs on Thu Apr 23, 2009 8:25 am

My beef isn't so much that it's against smokers, it's that it's only against smokers. I mean some places are smoke free venues, others offer both, but as you pointed out they do a terrible job of seperating the two, and some places, like the bars you mention have no bans.

The ban they are talking about in St. Louis is no public place in the city limits of St. Louis with be allowed to have smoking, bar, bowling alley, ball park, etc. No where, not special sectors, nothing. So I do sympathize with those who are allergic or who get sick by it. I mean I can't eat if someone is smoking by me, so I can sort of relate, but I blame the restaurant for not having a proper facility instead of the smoker who was hooked on this product and now being ostracized, it just seems we are picking on 1 sector of society and they have no spokesperson looking out for them. And as much as us non-smokers hate them, they are still part of society.

I don't see any city's banning alcohol to anyone who drives to a bar. You can drive to a bar, get drunk, drive to a liquor store, get more booze and then go home. And only the chance that you get pulled over do you get busted. Then all you have to do is take a class, pay a fine and it's a slap on the wrist. Or at least here it's that way, my be stricter in other parts of the country.

Maybe the smokers should have thought about this before they picked up the cigarette. Its not a right to smoke. Its not in the Constitution. The lawmakers can tell them to go wherever they want. and you know what, if it gets less kids to smoke, somehow, someway, and it saves lives, then it is a good thing.

a smoking ban passed in Austin for restaurants and bars about two years ago.. i voted against it at the time--but, now that we're stuck with it, i sure do enjoy it.. if a new vote comes up, i'd vote against the ban on principle.. but, as a non-smoker, going to concerts in small clubs without having to gag on other peoples' smoke all night has been nice.. i think the performers appreciate it, too.. smoking is allowed outside and on patios, of course--and most places around here had patios anyway.. it's also become much easier for me to get a drink at the inside bar now that the smokers are stuck outside.. (a bit selfish, yes.. but true).. the best part, though, (at least for all my smoker friends) is that most of the city hasn't taken enforcement all that seriously.. you won't see people smoking in nicer places--but the dive bars and less trendy clubs simply turn a blind eye to it..

well, Geez, the problem i have with bans like these are that it amounts to the government telling business owners what can and can't go on in their establishments.. and i'm not talkin' shady business here; smoking cigarettes is perfectly legal.. if i owned a bar, for example, and i felt like smoking a cigarette in my own bar--i'd be mighty pissed (and rightfully so) if someone told me i had to put it out

there's never been a law saying that business owners can't tell their customers not to smoke.. there have been plenty of places that had "no smoking" rules in place before the ban.. what was wrong with that system?

Because obviously the governments doesn't like smoking, and they want to do something about it. They know that trying to outlaw it would never fly, so they are slowly doing anything they can to prevent it without the full scale ban.

I agree smoking is wrong, but again it goes to the fact that they are being targeted over other more detrimental things.

I'm for all smoking bans, I don't smoke and I've got nothing against it except when it's bothering people who don't smoke. If someone can't go out to a club/bar/etc without catching 2nd hand cancer, that's a problem.

And here I think they have designated areas for smokers on patios or completely seperate rooms or whatnot. And I don't see the problem with that.

from someone who gets bad headaches from smoke, I say good. honestly I think it's ok if people smoke outside and i can even see the argument for owners allowing smoking in their own restaurants. On the other hand smoking is bad for you, and if its more of a hassle for you to smoke, then maybe you'll finally quit or never start.

NJ just recently passed a smoking ban about three or four years ago. The big thing is that the casino workers in Atlantic City were complaining about aqcuiring mostly minor health problems from second-hand smoke in the work environment, and they had all types of rallies and shit and eventually got this bill passed that says no one is allowed to smoke in any public establishment in the entire state whatsoever, EXCEPT in...Atlantic City! I'm not a smoker, I was when the ban passed but shortly after quit for other reasons the ban was just a coincidence, and I'm another person who feels that everyone should be allowed to live out their life the way they feel suits them best without hurting others and allow others to do the same, but what really pisses me off in our particular case of the smoking ban is that our brilliant fucking government pissed off not only every smoker in the entire state, but the very people who the ban was originally drafted to help appease. So, not only does NJ have the nerve to tell us we can't smoke, they basically said fuck you to the well-being of the casino workers who BY LAW are ENTITLED to a healthy work environment. And to make it worse they just raised the prices AGAIN, cigarettes here are...$8.00 a pack. Yup. That's the LOWEST price allowed by our state government. Who the fuck even voted for Corzine? God, smoker or not, I can't wait for our next gubernatorial elections...I'll be so happy when that fucking asshole is gone.

I saw something on ESPN today that kind of fits into the discussion. In skating rinks, if the zamboni (is that what its called?) has certain problems, it'll spew dangerous chemicals into the air. The federal government said "X amount in the air is dangerous," but there's not law against it. Needless to say, some rinks will not pay to fix up their machines. Kids were getting sick enough that they had to check into the hospital.

Should there be a law against this? Well, if you give the owners the right to pollute people's lungs, they will do just that. If you tell them no, they'll fix it or go out of business.

Like the economics class example: If there's not a law saying you can't mow your grass at 2 in the morning, the person mowing has the power in a barter system. If there is a law, you have the power. I would rather have the non-smokers have that power. They can smoke, if it's worth $100 fine.

Re: The New and Un-Improved Rant Thread

I have a pretty big problem with smoking in general. Having every person in your family dying of lung cancer or emphysema from smoking will do that to a guy. I see the argument for smoker's rights, I just don't care. There are noise laws, speeding laws, obscenity laws, etc and they only apply to a certain segment of the population so why shouldn't there be laws to protect people from a cancer causing agent delivered by second hand smoke.
If there is a law that prevents anyone under the age of 21 to buy or see pornography or drink alcohol then why shouldn't there be laws to keep people from commiting assault on my body.
True story time.
I was at a park watching a fireworks display. The place was packed and this lady sitting maybe 18 inches from me was smoking upwind of me and my gf. I politely asked her not to smoke or aim it elsewhere since my gf at the time had asthma. She gave me a look and said, "I'm outside so sorry but I can smoke outside." So the next time she blew smoke at me, I hawked up a loogie and spit on her leg. She freaked out and started cussing at me and I calmly told here that, "Since we were outdoors, I can spit as well. And since I am only hawking up the toxins you are spewing at me we are even." She got up and stormed away, still cursing loudly.
It was beautiful.
The moral of the story is that whether smoker's think they are being unfairly targeted, they need to see that they have been unfairly targeting their poisons at non-smokers for decades. Payback sucks.
