Film Time Capsule Empty Film Time Capsule

Post by IPKI$$ Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:08 pm

So, I've had this idea for awhile now and I wanted to get some other opinions on it. I want to make a Time Capsule of 100 (or so) films that should be required viewing for any movie fan. This isn't exactly the same as 'classic', or what have you. But, I want to eventually go out and actually obtain a copy of 100 essential films and put them in a time capsule to be unearthed by a later generation.

Let me explain what I consider essential. Any film that has had an indelible impact on not only cinema but also society. They don't necessarily have to be considered good or bad by the majority of people, they just have to have had a lasting effect on modern movies and culture.
For example, I hate The Shawshank Redemption, BUT I do recognize and appreciate it as an important story of friendship and loyalty that should be watched even if only once by anyone who's never seen it.
On the other side, I love Anchorman and saw it 3 times in theatres the week it came out, but by no means do I think anyone's life is incomplete for not having seen it.

So, what I'm proposing is that at least 10 interested participants, including myself, weigh in with their lists of 100 films that should be considered required for anyone, and the most frequent films will be purchased by me and entered in said time capsule.

2 stipulations though.

1. They shouldn't be TOO obscure as I'm going to have to track them down.
2. They should be as universally accessible as possible. If you need too much background information to understand a film, it loses it's magic.

Let me know what you guys think!

Also, any trilogies or series or whatever should be included altogether and not individually. Unless, there are certain notable entries. Examples- Casino Royale, not James Bond Movies & The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, not Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Glad to hear some enthusiasm. Just to reiterate, this won't be a ranking system or anything just an assortment of movies.

That's kinda the point. I'm almost done my list and I found myself saying, "man I hate that movie!" quite a few times. I think we'll get a really good list that way.

You only need one movie on this list!

HACKERS of course.

But no really, it should be in there somewhere, I need to get around to doing my own personal top 100 since my old one was lost forever on the old fantaverse, so I'll try to do both together.
