100 Essential Movies that EVERY American Should See

Movies are cultural--get over it. It's impossible to make a list of movies that everybody in the WORLD "should" see. It just doesn't make sense. These are the 100 movies that, in my opinion, are critical in understanding, appreciating, (and participating in) modern American culture. This is NOT my "favorite" 100 movies. And it's not the 100 "most important" movies. And, this part was difficult for me, but this is not 100 movies that everyone with an interest in the history of film should see... These are 100 movies that EVERY person living in America needs to see. I even included several films that I personally dislike--but that I found necessary to be included on the list. Even more painfully, I left off many of my absolute favorite films (including 8 1/2, Buffalo '66, Barton Fink, Bottle Rocket, Ed Wood, and Barry Lyndon) to make room for movies more appropriate to the list. My heart hurts. Anyway, here goes:
