No More Bonus Material on DVD Rentals? Empty No More Bonus Material on DVD Rentals?

Post by silversurfer19 Fri Mar 06, 2009 4:17 am

New just in from 20th Century Fox:

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, is hoping to increase DVD sales by launching a DVD program that creates two classes of discs. One is a premium retail version that contains added-values such as digital copy; the second is a stripped-down version for rentals.

According to a letter sent by Fox senior VP of sales Don Jeffries, the strategy starts with March 31st releases of "Marley and Me" and Best Picture Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire."

"Slumdog's" rental DVD, for instance, carries only the movie and trailers. The retail version also has special features including deleted scenes and commentaries. And while the rental Blu-ray does have the bonus features, only the retail Blu-ray adds digital copy.

Other titles initially covered by the new strategy are "Day the Earth Stood Still," due in stores April 7; "The Wrestler" and "Notorious" on April 21; and "Bride Wars" on April 28.

"We have developed product variations to feed different consumer consumption models and behaviors," the statement said. "For rental customers, we're delivering a theatrical experience in the home while promoting upcoming releases; for retail [or sell-through] customers, we're offering a premium product that expands the entertainment experience of that particular property to further enhance ownership."

Now I'm not a movie rental guy, so this won't affect me in the slightest, but I know a few of you on here do rent a lot. Will this affect your decision to rent or will you be more inclined to buy now? Is this a good idea business strategy wise and will other distributors follow suit?

Wow, such a random move. But then again, when's the last time Fox actually made a smart business decision? (Well yeah, going after Watchmen after it was already made was smart, but unethical.)

I don't think this will help Fox or the already struggling rental business.

But it doesn't really affect me since I almost never rent movies.

I'm kind of surprised that this didn't happen sooner since usually, people don't rent movies for the extras.

Meanwhile, how is the digital copy added value? I find it a distraction since I myself (and many others) don't buy the DVD to put a lower-definition copy on our iPods. It's just another attempt at the failed UMD format but with a lesser cost.

Yeah but I can understand why they would want to get rid of Digital Copies form rentals. It's like getting a film at 75% off. It doesn't seem like a good idea. Anyways, I don't find renting films a very efficient use of money or time. It is starting to sound like the studios are thinking the same thing. They are cutting costs and the consumer is the only one who feels it. Like I don't understand why not shipping the Bonus Content is saving that much money, and while it is not vital for a film, it does produce a sense of ownership for me at least, since a lot of the content is personal or the 'why' behind the film.

I don't think this will affect me much if at all. As you all know, I am a huge netflix junky. I have been a member of netflix since 2001. I haven't been to an actual video rental store in about 3 years (not counting the local library for free movies) so I get my movies directly from netflix. I will only care about the special features about 20 % of the time and usually if I like a movie enough to watch the special features, I own it.

Even for movies I own and I am interested in the bonus material, I rarely ever watch it. I still haven't watched the 2nd Disc of The Aviator even though the story behind Howard Hughes is very interesting and I have owned the Clerks X version for about 4 years and have never watched anything other than the movie even though there are 3 or 4 discs in that box set.

I just have so many movies to watch that I would move on to the next movie rather than spend an hour or so on behind the scenes or directors commentary.

And digital copies are pretty much useless. If I own the movie and I want a digital copy, I will rip it rather than spend the 1.99 to download a digital copy. Besides, who wants to watch a movie on a 3 inch iPod screen??? Hell I barely can stand watching porno on it. I do, but barely. LOL

Apparently, Fox already started doing this earlier this year. I rented copies of The Rocker and Babylon A.D. recently (both films sucked, by the way) and the DVD's had no extras. The retail versions meanwhile are special editions.

I hope more companies will release DVD's with no bonus features to sell them and charge a lower price like 6-10 dollars. I would love it. I rarely watch special features anyway.

I usually only watch the special features on movies I really like (i.e. I would score a 9-10 on imdb). This won't affect me b/c I usually buy those movies anyway. Everything else I rent and never watch the special features. BTW, after the extended versions of Lord of the Rings came out, all other special features have seemed lame.
