If I had a child, I would bet it's life that Watchmen will not get near $75 million in it's OW.

I'm starting to doubt whether it'll even get past $30.

From Deadline Hollywood Daily:

'Watchmen' Midnight Shows Selling Out

Watchmen doesn’t open until Friday, but Fandango is already seeing the film snap up 61% of the online ticket site’s sales. Dozens of Thursday midnight showtimes for the film are already sold out from New York City to Dallas to San Diego.

Over the weekend, Fandango surveyed moviegoers planning to screen Watchmen
-- 60% have read the Watchmen graphic novel
-- 85% say the online clips and trailers made them more excited to see the movie
-- 57% plan to see Watchmen with a group of friends
-- 71% are planning a get together before or after the movie
-- 85% had seen director Zack Snyder’s previous movie 300 on the big screen
-- 73% are male
-- 65% are aged 18 to 34

My guess for Watchmen is 47-53 Mil OW. 75 is ridiculous.

From Slash Film

MovieTickets.com just issued a press release claiming that Watchmen is outpacing 300 in advance ticket sales at 4-to-1 right now. But 300 sold more than 80 percent of its advance tickets on the Wednesday and Thursday prior to its release, so it’s too early for Zack Snyder and crew to celebrate. Also interesting is that IMAX ticket sales currently account for one-third of all ticket sales for Watchmen. This is shocking because only 124 IMAX screens will be showing Watchmen. 300 grossed $70.9 million in its first weekend, and went on to make over $210 million domestically, of which, $20 million was made via 62 domestic IMAX theaters. A couple dozen Thursday midnight shows are already sold out in New York and California.

Going by ComingSoon's the Weekend Warrior and BOM Derby, 70m seems to be just about right. Will be very interesting to see how this plays out, and even more interesting in the coming weeks.

I'm beginning to think 300 is to Hannah Montana 3D as Watchmen is to Jonas Brothers 3D because the first two had way more hype but the others were tracking better and were in more theaters.

However, I do not believe this DHD report as it is not selling out anywhere and they tricked us last weekend with the "Jonas Brothers sellouts". But in 3500+ theaters, tracking at 75 million, big buzz, great marketing, including a trailer in front of The Dark Knight that was very well-received, the economic recession, and the current dead box office and lack of competition all makes it look like a $70 million opening.

And yes, I would bet my child it does not get under $40 million this weekend.

I really don't know where this $70 OW figure is coming from, I still highly doubt this'll play anything like 300.

But on the off chance that it does hit that, it'll be because of fanboys going multiple times. And it'll drop like a rock afterwards. Especially since the rest of March is looking particularly strong. It's similar to January in that it has something for everyone - and we all know how that turned out.

It looks like it will be in the most amount of theaters ever for an R-rated movie (I think the number 1 is the Matrix with just over 3600), and people were going to the movies a lot, but nobody went last week.

Also, the deadened box office (and since JB is only on one screen) will make the big theaters have to give it so many screens that it will look like they are expecting it to make $100 million.

Sky City Cinemas NZ is holding 251 screening of Watchmen just over the weekend, which is a massive proportion of the market. Some cinemas are holding multiple screenings at the same time just to accommodate it. Most of our IMAX screenings are virtually sold out for the midnight and weekend evening sessions. I'm thinking its gonna be pretty big over here.

Deadline Hollywood Daily posted those numbers regarding US IMAX sellouts and the proportion of its audience etc. I found out my info just by clicking on the leading NZ cinema website and checking the how many seats had sold out so far on its seating chart.

Yeah, I've never heard of a seating chart for the movie theater either. First come first serve for seats, which leads to lineups for new hot releases.

Yea, Busch we are from near the same area and I've never seen reserved seating anywhere around here. The only IMAX in the city (Ronnie's) is definitely first come first serve. Even at Moolah, the single screen theatre with beanbags, leather chairs and couches, it is still first come first serve seating.

Speaking about Ronnie's, they've sold out the midnight show and the first Friday evening show on the IMAX screen.

And I've been to that IMAX screen twice (for Beowulf and Shine A Light) and it is first-come, first-serve.
