Anyone know much about DVRs?
I looked into getting a DVR from my cable company and it is $20/month for one room. I only want it for one room, but I find it ridiculous to pay $240/year for DVR service. Does anyone know if I can get a subscription free DVR? I'd like one with a hard-drive. If possible, I'd also like one with a DVD recorder in it, but it must have a hard drive. I know nothing about this kind of stuff and thought maybe someone here would.

I think $20/mo is about right for DVR. It's totally worth it though.

Tivo used to have a one time payment, lifetime subscription option, but they have since done away with that

we're paying $10/mo for ours... totally worth it, imo... the idea of being obligated to plan your personal schedule around what's on TV has always seemed a bit silly to me... but then i was always missing my favorite shows

If you guys have it in your area, I'd suggest AT&T cable/internet. You only pay for one DVR box but you have the capabilities on every TV in the house. You can pause the TV in one room and resume it in another. It's pretty cool stuff and it's way cheaper than my old Time Warner bill.
