It's still a headscratcher to me of how Outlander got 81 theatres while Killshot only got 5 theatres. Yes The Weinstein Company distributed both films but Killshot's got an Academy Award nominee in it! But also Killshot was heavily edited and reshot before opening and barely resembles the book as a result. (In testing, they promoted to people who really liked Collateral and Traffic. The people who really liked those movies are obviously not the audience for an Elmore Leonard adaptation.)

If anyone actually gets to see 'Outlander,' it was filmed just down the road from where I live. A friend of mine was running the Starbucks in the hotel where John Hurt was staying and got meet him every morning. The funny thing is that he had grown his hair out and just looked raggedy. People would come into the store and take wide turns to get around him. This apparently amused Hurt because he could enjoy his morning in peace, *lol* I don't know where any of the others stayed but (to borrow from numbersix) Jim cava...cazav...cafegv.. Jesus bought some books from my store while he was in town.

From Deadline Holywood Daily:
No. 1 is still too close to call for the weekend between Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans with predictions of $21.5 each by the time totals are tallied Monday. "Fortunately, it's Sony vs Sony so we won't have an Industry controversy," one rival studio exec told me tonight. "It feels like Mall Cop wins by a whisker." But the PG-rated Kevin James laffer maintained an amazing hold Saturday for $10 million and possibly a $21.7M weekend, down no more than 33% from a week ago. While the vampire threequel took in $8.3 million Saturday for what may be a $21.3M FSS.

Here are the Top 5:
1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop (Columbia/Sony) $21.7M Wkd
2. UnderWorld 3 (Screen Gems/Sony) $21.3 Wkd
3. Gran Torino (Warner Bros) $15M Wkd
4. Hotel For Dogs (Paramount) $12M Wkd
5. Slumdog Millionaire (Fox Searchlight) $10M Wkd

From Box Office Mojo:

1. Paul Blart - $21.5M
2. Underworld - $20.7M
3. Gran Torino - $16.0M
4. Hotel For Dogs - $12.36M
5. Slumdog - $10.55M (its FIRST Top 5 point!)

PTA:

1. Slumdog - $7,477
2. Underworld - $7,036
3. Paul Blart - $6,838
4. Wrestler - $6,537
5. Bashir - $6,120

Killshot was a bust with $10,060 collected and a PTA of $2012.

No word on Of Time and the City or Donkey Punch.

Damn you Blart. Wish I had picked it in at least one league....

On the bright side, Bashir is finally picking up a PTA point after a month of finishing 6th!!

How many PTA points has Slumdog picked up? It, The Wrestler and Gran Torino must be battling for first place in the PTA category - however, I have no doubt that will be the best pick when it comes to total performance.

I found this over at WorldofKj written by O:
This January will finish with about $975 m (a rough estimate).

This would be bigger than every December except December 2007.

This would be the 11th biggest month of all time.

This would be bigger than every September, October, February, March, April.

This would be bigger than every other January, August, and yes even bigger than ANY MAY!

This would rank bigger than all but two June's (June 2008/June 2004).

It would also be 15.9% bigger than last January, the biggest one ever.

If you take out July's, this month could be the 4th biggest ever.

Most incredible is the fact that this is with weak daily numbers, while the summer season has the benefit of strong weekdays.

Also I'd like to point out that that is a fantastic hold for Hotel for Dogs, and great holds for Blart and Gran Torino. Not bad for MVB, but horrible for Notorious as it only made $1 million more this weekend than it did last Sunday.

TDK made $170,000 in re-release according to Variety.

Benjamin Button had a solid rise. And if Slumdog Millionaire expands again next weekend, it could be #1.

If January 26-31 made the same amount as it did last year, that would put January at $1,001 million. January 2008 had a Saturday and Sunday left, and we have a Friday and Saturday left as far as weekends go, so its still possible.

I haven't got the stats on me but I think it is very tight between the three, with Slumdog probably just in the lead after this weekend. If it goes wider next week and performs well (ie more top 5), I'm sure it will be the best pic of the three, especially with all the Oscar buzz.

19+5= 24 PTA Points for Slumdog
18+2 = 20 PTA for The Wrestler
19+0= 19 PTApoints for Gran Torino

if estimates hold

I wish I had picked Slumdog in at least one league. I guess I just didn't recognise the potential. At least I snatched up Gran Torino which is performing very well. And I'm glad I ditched Inkheart from a couple of my slates this week. That would have been a big blow to my leagues.

I said this in my "Weekend Winners" back on FM... this is why picking PTA winners in January is such a bitch. Sigh. Yonkers Joe? Of Time and the City? A film to be named later? What was I thinking?

That is why I didn't choose any January PTA films on any slates. Slumdog is absolutely this years Juno, only with more PTA and less dollars... so far. Anyone that gambled on it is patting themselves on the back right now. Too bad I only had it until December.

Well, your opinion of Juno is well known, but I was referring to it strictly by its value in this game.

Damn, Kevin James must be the King of Hollywood right now. Who expected this kind of performance from Paul Blart? Good for him though, he's a hiliarious guy. Great in King of Queens and his standup isn't half-bad (I prefer the raunchier stuff myself).

He's definitely gonna have a truckload of comedy scripts coming his way the next couple of months (probably including the inevitable Paul Blart sequel).

So did anyone take Paul Blart, My Bloody Valentine and Underworld, and NOT take Bride Wars in the Super Leagues? If they did, hand them a first round IM. They are going to get it. That is, unless more people did this than IM's will be given out.

The Class was supposed to come out next week, but I guess the original French language version (with no subtitles) came out a week early, because Entre Les Murs is playing near me (I live in Quebec though). I wonder if the french version will be tracked.

The answer to your question, geeze, is no. No one picked those three combinations of movies, in either Ultimate or Box Office, without picking Bride Wars. IMs are still wide open.

BTW, pencil in codeslinger as the winner of the final FM-started Regulars league (the Scarface one).

That's good to know Shryke. That means I still got a shot. Paul Blart is a must-own film if you want to be even considered at this point, in either format.

How many of us did pick Paul Blart? I felt good about having it, but it means a lot less if 85% of the field hopped on the band wagon.
