Guilty Pleasures

Post by Keyser Soze on Wed Jan 14, 2009 9:26 pm

It's a Saturday afternoon, it's pouring outside, and you've got the flu. You're flipping through the 2,487,125 channels that we now have access to, and you come across that one movie that you just can't help yourself from watching over and over again. You've seen it 10,000 times, can recite almost every line of dialogue by heart but dammit, you watch every time it's on. Even if there are only 15 minutes to go in the flick, you'll sit there and soak in each and every glorious moment until the credits roll. These aren't always movies we're proud to admit that we like, but oh how we love to watch them.

There are hundreds of great movies that I love to watch when given the opportunity, but Guily Pleasures are different. They can be bad, they can be cheesy, but something in it just pushes that button inside you that makes you drop everything and watch.

For me they are:

Fandango
Where Eagles Dare
Turk 182 (Don't know how I forgot this one)
Wizards (Ralph Bakshi animation)
Vertigo
Network
Red Dawn
Things to do in Denver When you're Dead
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Fletch
The Magnificent Seven
The Great Escape
More recently, Smokin' Aces

What are yours??????

Wow, Keyser I've only seen two movies on your list but I do watch those too whenever they are on (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Smokin Aces).

But some of mine include:

Mean Girls
Demolition Man
Wild Wild West
Clue
Meet The Parents
Transformers (I think I've watched this on HBO and Cinemax more than any other movie in my life)
Office Space
Batman Forever

ODG, you're asking me to remember something that happened more recently than breakfast? I'm like Swedge in that if I have to remember something than something has to be removed from the brain. In fact, Christina asked me to remember to stop by the dry cleaners this morning on my way home from work, and just to do that, I had to forget the whole second grade.

I actually think it was on some local channel a few years ago.

Wait a minute, Vertigo and Office Space in a guilty pleasures thread.... They are both in my top 100 list. That cannot be right.

I have a hard time feeling guilty about any of my cinematic likes or dislikes (the things I haven't seen are much more guilt inducing actually), I *DO* like cheesy girly movies so I will watch even really bad ones quite often, but so do most girls. Probably the closest to a guilty pleasure is that I will watch basically ANYTHING, even utter crap, that is shown on LOGO (the les-bi-gay network).

ha, i feel ya.. i just asked because, when i first saw Wizards, i had to hunt it down.. it was rare as hell at the time (this was loooong before netflix, obviously).. it certainly wasn't being shown on any tv channels in my area..

I dunno, that sounds like a full-fledged, certifiable Guilty Pleasure, if you ask me.

So you're saying that a Guilty Pleasure can't be a good movie? I gave my definition of what I thought a Guilty Pleasure was in my initial post. What is yours?

Yeah, I have a problem with that. I mean, if a film is something I enjoy, whether others consider it cliched or corny or not, I don't really care. If I like a film I can usually come up with a good justification of why it's good, so I don't really feel guilty. For example, I think Mean Girls is actually a good movie, a 21st Century Heathers, and I don't feel guilty admitting it.

I suppose the closest I come is that the other day I watched Into the Blue just so I could leer at Jessice Alba.
I wonder, though, is Star Wars (the oiginal trilogy) a guilty pleasure? I mean, the acting is wooden, the dialogue is mostly awful, and it's just a cross between a western, a samurai movie, and a sci-fi. But its too ingrained in my past for me to fully step back.

Man you are full of them today. Smile

Mine would be the following. Although as UDM says, I don't feel guilty about most of them but probably should.

Conan the Barbarian
Bloodsport
The Lost Boys
Daredevil
Freedom Writers
Punisher (the original with Ivan Drago/Dolph Lundgren)
Rocky IV (hehe, Dolph was my idol when I was 10-12)
The Dreamers (naked Eva Green pre-Casino Royale leering here, 6)
Nightbreed (one of my favorite horror movies even before I "got it")

Six,

Guilty Pleasure is just a term I coined for movies that I can't not watch. Doesn't mean that you should feel guilty for liking them. I mean there are nigh on thousands of movies that I love and many of them are available on those bazillion channels that we get at any time during a given day, but I don't stop and watch them every time they're on. A perfect example to me is Batman Begins. Really, really like this movie, and it's pretty muc on TBS or TNT at least once a week, but do I stop and watch it every time it's on? No. Don't know why but I don't. The movies I listed above, I do. Just wanted to know what movies fit that criteria for others. Call 'em whatever you like.

Freddy Got Fingered
UHF
Judge Dredd
Starship Troopers

The Black Cauldron
Career Opportunities (the most underappreciated John Hughes film and the first time I remembered seeing Jennifer Connelly in a film)
Gone In 60 Seconds (1974)
Transformers: The Movie
Short Circuit
Stay Tuned (one of my favorites when I was five)
Problem Child and Problem Child 2 (my family loves to quote the first one)
Hudson Hawk
Look Who's Talking
etc.

The cheese in the original (such as the Transformers dancing to Dare To Be Stupid) only make the film better. One of those 1980's films that I'd love to experience in a theatre but is near impossible due to print availability (other examples being Manhunter and the Death Wish sequels).

I think this is because Batman Begins is boring as hell. I loved it the first time I watched it, but I think it's one of those movies that cannot be viewed more than once without wanting to shove a spiked baseball bat up your ass - just to make it interesting.

Adding Nothing But Trouble to my list.

Oh okay, my understanding of a guilty pleasure is a film you KNOW is bad, real bad, but when it's on TV you'll probably tune in. Like some goofy 80's comedy (Police Academy!) or one of those awful dance movies just to drool over the lead actress's body (yes, I actually have seen Honey). Vertigo could never be a guilt pleasure because there's no guilt- it's simply one of the greatest films ever made.

I wouldn't tune into Batman Begins either- I've seen it twice and that's enough for me. I'm not a huge fan, because of Nolan's confused world of serious tone yet ridiculous plot. They seemed at odds with each other.
