Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Tough break for Robert Downey Jr. in the Supporting Actor category, but this one's a slam dunk for Heath.
Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Interesting that John Brolin wasn't even nominated in that category, despite beating out Heath just recently.
I LOVE the fact that Tom Cruise was nominated for Tropic Thunder, as he was the only thing that made that film mildly amusing for me.
My predictions:
Motion Picture (Drama) - Slumdog Millionaire
Actress (Drama) - Meryl Streep, Doubt
Actor (Drama) - Sean Penn, Milk
Motion Picture (Comedy) - Mamma Mia!
Actress (Comedy) - Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky
Actor (Comedy) - Javier Bardem, VCB
Animated Film - Wall-E
Foreign Language - I've Loved You So Long
Supporting Actress - Kate Winslet, The Reader
Supporting Acdtor - Heath Ledger, Dark Knight
Director - Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Screenplay, Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire
Original Score - Hans Zimmer, Frost/Nixon
Original Song - The Wrestler, Bruce Springsteen
Winslet and Streep are nominated in both Lead and Supporting Actress, and I don't feel comfortable picking either of them to win both, so I went back and forth on who should win what. Doubt was probably a stronger performance, and Winslet's role in the Reader is tailor-made for awards.
Sean Penn and Heath Ledger are obvious choices, as is Wall-E.
Slumdog Millionaire is just too damn good (or so I've heard) to walk away empty-handed, so I'm betting it will surprise a lot of people by copping Best Drama and Best Director, as well as Best Screenplay.
The weakest category, by far, was Best Supporting Actor (Comedy). Farrell and Gleeson will cancel each other out, Last Chance Harvey honestly doesn't look like a winner for D.Hoffman, and Franco's role in Pineapple Express, while wacky and out there, isn't the type to win critics over, so Bardem wins by default.
Orignal Score and Song are complete guesses, but awards-givers love Springsteen (remember Philadelphia) and they adore Hans Zimmer, who's been scoring award-winning films for decades.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Yeah, the only one who could MAYBE give Mr. Ledger a run at it is Philip Seymour Hoffman. And also, James Franco seems kind of like an out-of-nowhere pick, to me. Not totally undeserved now that I think about it, but wow, hadn't contemplated that possibility. As a preliminary guesswork (and it's just guesswork), here's what I say; admittedly this is an amalgamation of both who I think WILL win and who I kind of WANT to.
Drama: Frost/Nixon or Revolutionary Road
Actress, Drama: Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Actor, Drama: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Best Comedy/Musical: actually going to go with a sleeper here, and say either Burn After Reading or In Bruges
Actress, Comedy: Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky (ick)
Actor, Comedy: I agree with the statement that Farrell and Gleeson cancel each other out. So, yeah, Javier Bardem. Franco's a close 2nd.
Animated: Wall-E, duh.
Foreign: Either Gomorrah or Waltz with Bashir, leaning towards the former.
Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz, VCB
Supporting Actor: Gotta go with Ledger, easily.
Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Screenplay: Peter Morgan, Frost/Nixon
Score: Alexandre Desplat, Benjamin Button
Original song: I dig that Peter Gabriel song, so I'm going to go with that. P.S., that song from Bolt is kinda god-awful.

Are you serious shryke? I cant believe someone can get nominated for grabbing their crotch and dancing to 'Low'.
I would like to make predictions too but i haven't seen most of these. lots of them are starting to expand, so hopefully i'll get to see them soon.

Remember that the Hollywood Foreign Press likes a lot of things that we may not.
Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
That's true. But it's also easy to bribe them for nominations. Who can forget the Pia Zadora incident?

Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
I am ecstatic to see Cruise in for Tropic Thunder and Franco for Pineapple Express. They were the two best performances by anyone in a comedy all year, as well as two of the best in any film, nevermind just comedies.
Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
They're only being recognized because both are playing against type, that's all. I mean, I loved James Franco and Pineapple Express, but he didn't exactly re-define the slacker stoner role...and Tom Cruise was funny in Tropic Thunder up until his last scene. You know which one I'm talking about. I didn't think he was in it enough to garner a nomination, considering he does have a film opening in which he is the star...that says something about Valkyrie's chances. Looks like I'm gonna be disappointed december 26th.
Besides that, none of the nominations really surprised me. It looks like the golden globes. It's got an amalgam of all different kinds of films and performances. Should be some interesting results.

I agree entirely. He was in the movie maybe 15 minutes max. And in that time he was good, but nothing mind blowing. It was more of a "oh my GOD, look at Tom Cruise. That is SOOOO not like his usual role, he is f##$%g brilliant in this." A wasted nomination if you ask me.

I could not disagree more. He was f##$%g brilliant in it. He made the movie and it was my second favorite of the year.It was more of a "oh my GOD, look at Tom Cruise. That is SOOOO not like his usual role, he is f##$%g brilliant in this."
Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Although...now that I think about it, it's kinda weird that all 5 Best Picture noms in the drama category also have their Directors being recognized...and Gran Torino only grabbing one for score? Oh, well. It'll pick up quite a few at the oscars, so whatever.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
I like how you copied my pronunciation of f##$%g to the letter. I'm not denying it that it was good, but I think it was massively overhyped, and RDJ was much better in that movie alone. When I think of best comedic performances this year I think of Colin Farrell in In Bruges, Sam Rockwell in Choke, Dylan Moran in Run Fat Boy Run, Adam Goldberg in 2 Days In Paris and pretty much every member of the cast of The Darjeeling Limited. All of those performances were better than Cruise's, in my opinion of course.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Nothing has made me laugh even close to as hard as Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. So I can't say anyone pulled off a comedic role better. And yes, I copied the letters

Probably not. The film only made $6,000 in eight theatres on opening day.

It must have been in one theatre on Wednesday and Thursday then eight starting today. But still I believe it will get massacred by the holy trinity of Gran Torino, Doubt and Frost/Nixon this weekend.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Wow, that song by Clint Eastwood got nominated? As anyone else heard that atrocity...?
Tom Cruise was not funny in Tropic Thunder. The pure novelty of him playing the part made it cool for about 5 minutes, but by the time he started dancing, it was way too much. He did do some funny shit in between though. "G5!!!"
Surprised that Milk got totally ignored. I mean, the Sean Penn nod was inevitable, but how can it not get one single other nomination?
And where is Seven Pounds? I think the lack of marketing has buried this one before it even gets started. It's gonna need TERRIFIC WoM to get anywhere close to Will Smith's $100 mark.

Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Face it, there aren't very many good songs today. Especially since everything is either fourth-generation gangsta rap, emo or bubblegum pop.
But Peter Gabriel is probably going to win and they probably wanted four other acceptable choices (the rap song for Tropic Thunder would have been a good choice but you can't say "I like the pussy" on American television).

Re: Golden Globe Nominations Discussion
Eh, if South Park was nominated for an Oscar (and yes, it wasn't a very profane song, but still), then I think the song from Tropic Thunder could have been mentioned. But the problem may be that it wasn't very long... are there any requirements on length for Golden Globe consideration?
