The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
*Please note that this is not a game!
What does the Fanatverse think about this little film? I'm not feeling it so much. I think it is equally as out of place as the Rated R Walk Hard comedy. I think this film will put Sin City 2 production in doubt.
3 OW/11 Total

As a duly noted comic book geek and huge fan of Will Eisner, I will defintely be seeing this film. Will the general public go for it? Most likely, no. It's not a character they're familiar with, it doesn't have enough of a star power lead to get them to come out and see it, and the trailers certainly won't make anyone sit up and say, "I've got to see that movie". On the other hand, with Frank Miller's track record, I really don't see this film's success one way or the other impacting the studios decision on whether to produce Sin City 2.

It's got to do better than Punisher: War Zone. I mean, this one actually looks like a real movie instead of something for the video market!

Its being marketed fairly well. It can't bomb as Hard as Walk Hard did.
Re: The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
I think that a better comparison would be The Spirit and AVP-Requiem. I think that The Spirit (and its PG13 rating) should land somewhere past Walk Hard's 18M and closer AVP-R's 42, but under 40M. Nothing new opening the following weekend and the freshest thing resembling action would be TDTESS.

You know, I still don't understand why Walk Hard flopped. It had the components of a hit and it just died. I mean, even Meet The Spartans did better at the box office!

Totally agree synestro. And Buscemi, Walk Hard was killed by its competition. Meet the Spartans didn't have any. Except Rambo, which wasn't much competition anyway.

I think it'll do better than 3 OW/ 11T, but i do think it'll finish behind all the new releases and probably even behind yes man and seven pounds

I don't think that it matters how well or how poorly The Spirit does; People will still come out for Sin City 2

I think The Spirit will do decent. Maybe 10-14 OW and about 30-40 Total. Not great but not bad for an unknown hero who hasn't been seen in a few decades.
Re: The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
Of course it'll beat Dewey Cox. $50m no problem. A cast packed with that much oestrogen is gonna get the guys flocking, and add the BMF into the mix and Frank Miller at the helm, it doesn't matter how cheesy the movie may look (the comic was very cheesy at times) it looks kick ass. I'm there opening night, and I'm sure the comic brethern will follow too.

Wait...I didn't realize people actually had doubts about this movie doing well. All the target demographic for this movie needs to tell them that they absolutely MUST see this movie is in the trailer. Hot girls. Sam Jackson. "From the creators of Sin City". This will be a hit. I'm saying it beats Walk Hard's total in its opening weekend, which actually shouldn't be too hard.
The main reason Walk Hard flopped is simple. The average movie-going public is stupid, and I know a whole bunch of people who didn't go see it because they thought Dewey Cox was a real musician that they had never heard of. Despite the familiar prescence of every comedic actor in hollywood and an Apatow mention.

Re: The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
The Spirit is going to bomb. Badly. It has almost nothing going for it at all. The trailers are incredibly cheesy, filled with terrible one-liners. As well, the reviews coming in are trashing it. Throw in the fact that the Christmas break is already jam-packed with movies, and I can't see this one making more than $20 million (and that's total, not opening weekend). None of the actresses are big enough names to draw in business, and even Samuel L Jackson never draws in big box office numbers.
I don't know a single person that is going to see this in theatres. While I personally think the film looks like crud, even when putting my biases aside, I cannot see it doing well. It'll peform very slightly over Walk Hard.

Re: The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
The movie was reviewed in our local paper today not by one of the usual movie reviewers, but by the one writer they always go to whenever there is a story involving anything pop culture or comic book related. This guy could not have given the Spirit a worse review had he tried. He said it failed on every level, and it had nothing to do with whether or not Miller was faithful to the character. From the story, to the dialogue to the visuals, he said there was just nothing positive to say. I usually don't make my decision on whether to see a movie based on a review, but since this guy is coming at it from the same direction I would be and not just some uninformed reviewer disecting its cinematic merits, I'm thinking I'm going to have pass on this one until it hits DVD or PPV.
Re: The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
Well, it really looks like this movie has bombed. I hoped it would perform a little better than it has, maybe making $20m over the 4 days, but I guess you can't beat a bad word of mouth. Maybe studios will think again before handing a project to a non director just because of his name. I'll still go see this when it is released over here, but I really wanted this to be great, to totally match my expectations raised through the brilliance of the comics. From what I have heard so far it doesn't even get close, and the BO has reflected this.

Yeah but it will still beat Walk Hard by a landslide.
Re: The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
I knew it. It will only slightly surpass Walk Hard. They should have kept it in it's original Janurary release date, where it could have made a bit more extra cash without all the competition.

I agree. It would have done much better in January or even the late summer.

Re: The Spirit: Over/Under Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story's Domestic Gross
The release date for 'The Spirit' was poor but, having seen it, I'm not sure that any date would have made a big difference in the end. I probably would have kept the December release, but pushed it much earlier to, say, the December 5 weekend. Yes it would have competed against 'The Punisher 2: Still Punishin',' but it would have had the whole month ahead of it instead of breadcrumbs in January.

With an estimated 82% drop this weekend, The Spirit is just about done. It's current domestic total is estimated at nearly 19M. All in all, it might end up at probably 21 or so if it is successful in the dollar theaters. Anyways, with a 5.2 IMDB, I hope that there were very few picking up this one to win leagues.
