Something I always wanted to bring to FM . . . .

Post by JackO on Wed Nov 26, 2008 7:08 am

The Blank Movie will get X amount of dollars club!

It's a pretty simple concept really. Someone makes a predict, like I think Delgo over 100 Million. Then they make a topic about it. People join if they agree; or debate and discuss, if they don't. The only thing on the line is pride. They can be be as crazy or as reasonable as you want. From opening weekends to opening days, to calling bombs to PTAs, these threads are a lot of fun for idle banter. Anyways, it'll probably get better as we expand. So, what does the 'verse think? albino

The Wrestler will do a minimum of $50M at the Box Office. It is a steal at $4 in the BO league. Too Pricey in Ult.
Marley and Me will BOMB
Waltz with Bashir is the PTA pick for Ultimates.
Take 'Taken' in both leagues, its an awesome flick.
Tyler Perry will redeem his BO shine with Madea Goes to Jail.

This thread is really similar to 'Monkey Shines'.

Waltz With Bashir is similar to The Orphanage from last year. Both are on the heels of recent foreign hits of a certain sub-genre (Waltz With Bashir is animated and following Persepolis while The Orphanage was horror and followed Pan's Labyrinth). The Orphanage grossed well short on Pan's total, so I'll say that Waltz With Bashir will be a box office disappointment though it may get an Oscar nomination.

Taken will probably be a box office disappointment due to the constant delays and the fact that it will likely be out on DVD in France, the UK, Australia and other places by the time in opens in the US causing people to be more interested in importing the DVD than paying $8.00 to see it in theatres. I agree that it will be a good movie it's just that it won't be a box office hit.

So, I'll say that Taken will make $15 million total.

My comments on Bashir were PTA oriented not Box Office. Sony Classics did an excellent job with Persopolis and with the high marks Bashir has already received I'm sure they are going to follow the same release model as they did with Persopolis, which last year translated into 21 PTA, it did better than There Will be Blood due to the modest screen counts throughout January and into February.

And you may be right about Taken's Box Office chances. Last spring 88 Minutes faced the same problem and it scored under $20M. However, the IMDb user rating is at a 7.9 with over 16000 votes with some potential top 5 and $20M still makes it a value in Ultimates for only $5. Honestly, I've seen it and it plays out like a watered down Man on Fire, but still excellent for a PG13 thriller, which that MPAA rating helps it B.O. chances.

The difference between Waltz With Bashir now and Persepolis then is competition. Not only does Bashir have Revolutionary Road, but it also has Defiance, Good, Che, and Last Chance Harvey. I think going in with the expectations of 20 PTA is bit much.

Technically, the way it turned out it is, but what I had in mind was something different. Here, I'll create what I wanted to do!

Yeah, i figured you wanted a BoxOfficeMojo thing where they do in/out of clubs. It's a great idea for here, we'll see where people stand on such issues.

This sounds intriguing. Have you created what you initially had in mind Jacko?

Wow, this was one thing I liked about FM. People in WorldofKJ and BOM Forums are sick of all the clubs, and we didn't have any.
