Buscemi's Ten Most Anticipated Movie Of 2009's First Trimester Empty Buscemi's Ten Most Anticipated Movie Of 2009's First Trimester

Post by Buscemi Tue Dec 09, 2008 3:48 am

This is an answer thread to Shryke's post about his most anticipated. I disagreed on a few of his but I decided that the best thing would be to take my own whack (ha ha, whack) at this. And let's get started with Part 1.

10.The Unborn (January 9th)
Jewish Exorcist? I'm so there! Plus the cast (including Gary Oldman as a rabbi) is a major hook for me. Let's hope that David S. Goyer finally proves that he can direct as well as he can write.

9.Earth (April 22nd)
I've been wanting to see this one ever since I read about its worldwide success. And being a sucker for animal documentaries and nature films (such as March Of The Penguins, Meerkat Manor, The Adventures Of Milo and Otis, The Bear and Two Brothers), I really love watching the animals do their thing. Plus, I really enjoyed the trailer with James Earl Jones's narration and the animals that we get to see in the film.

8.Friday the 13th (February 13th)
Though he is hit-and-miss on screen, you can't help but love Jason Voorhees. And on February 13th, we get to see his long-awaited return. Though I have been disappointed with some of the remakes/reboots of classic horror characters (such The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the second half of Halloween) you can guarantee that seeing the legend again on screen will be worth it, good or not. Plus, Danielle Panabaker (from Sky High) is in it so I'll really be awaiting this one.

7.Sunshine Cleaning (March 13th)
Had they released this film last year, it would have been its Little Miss Sunshine. It is a black comedy about a family business that cleans up the blood of crime scenes. Sound familiar? Though Tarantino produced a similar film, this film will likely hold up on its own with its ensemble cast (led by Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and Academy Award winner Alan Arkin) and its direction (by Christine Jeffs). Hopefully Overture doesn't sit on it any longer because I can't wait.

6.Notorious (January 16th)
This is another music biopic about an artist from the streets but it's no vanity project (cough, Get Rich or Die Tryin'). And the music is actually good for a change. I was unsure about the film until I saw the teaser and I was floored by its editing and music. Can the film itself live up to the advertising? We shall find out on January 16th.

Buscemi's Ten Most Anticipated Movie Of 2009's First Trimester Empty Re: Buscemi's Ten Most Anticipated Movie Of 2009's First Trimester

Post by Buscemi Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:41 am

Part 2

5.Monsters vs. Aliens (March 27th)
The film could be in fact DreamWorks' most interesting idea ever. It's in 3-D, the characters and idea appeal to adults (I'm convinced that B.O.B. is based upon Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and the cast is well-assembled (featuring such names as Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, Will Arnett and Stephen Colbert as The President). Let's hope that it's more in line with Shrek and Kung Fu Panda than with Shark Tale.

4.Taken (January 30th)
Though long-delayed, I am still very interested in Luc Besson's attempt at a Bourne-esque action film. Liam Neeson looks to be in top form here and you can't go wrong with a Luc Besson idea but it's more likely that people will import the DVD rather than watch it in the theatre. But for now I'll let the fellow Moguls who've seen it fill in the details.

3.Coraline (February 6th)
I really enjoyed reading Neil Gaiman's book in junior high and I loved Henry Selick's animation in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou when I first saw it (yes, I know he did The Nightmare Before Christmas but I'm trying to keep my chronology closer to time). When I read that the two would be teaming up for a film version, I was psyched. And after four years of waiting, it is finally coming out. And in 3-D, no less. Please don't disappoint me, Mr. Selick and Mr. Gaiman. And especially don't disappoint me Universal, because I don't want you delaying it again.

2.The Wolfman (April 3rd)
The Wolf Man is one of the classic Universal Monsters and the most famous one not to have seen a reboot. Until now. Benicio Del Toro plays Lyle Talbot in this new version of the story from the writer of Seven and the director of The Rocketeer, Jumanji and the upcoming Captain America (originally Mark Romanek was attached and had he stayed, the film would probably be at Number One). I have not seen a trailer yet but just from seeing some of the talent involved (including Rick Baker in charge of creating the title character), it should be a good film.

1.Watchmen (March 6th)
I'm not worried about the lawsuit or the new ending or the chunks of story being cut, I just want to finally see the greatest graphic novel of all-time come alive on screen. Everyone else can fill in the blanks.

That's my list and I'm sticking to it.

I can't wait for Sunshine Cleaning too. It looks like one of those quirky indie movies that ends up winning everyone over, although I don't know how it's release date relates to how good it is. But, I guess indies might be an exception to that rule.

The Watchmen looks great as well. I've been thinking about picking up the book and reading it. I might just see it anyway cause I love a good action movie.

Watchmen, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Sunshine Cleaning top my list. I would liken Taken more towards Man on Fire than Bourne, which I feel is too high a pedistal. I really liked Man on Fire, and I promise you other than a few "conveniences" in the film, Taken is pretty damn good. My wife enjoyed it too.

I am SO pumped for Coraline - I can't decided if I want to reread the book before I see it or let myself be surprised, it's been a while since I have read it.

Watchmen goes without saying.

The others, I will probably be seeing, but I am not overly excited for them

I've been debating on this too...My brother has read it a couple of times and keeps telling me how amazing it is! Although with all the talk I keep hearing about the studio changing things, it would probably just piss me off...

A lot of those movies are also on my list on what to watch. Here are few that are not on both:

Observe and Report - Seth Rogen plays against his "fat dork" type. Should be fun.

Adventureland: Superbad's director's new movie with Bella a.k.a. Kristen Stewart.

I will see Adventureland but I'm afraid that it's going to be more Garden State than Superbad. And I think that we've had too many Garden State clones.

And now an Honorable Mention for my list:

O'Horten (February 20th)

Factotum was one of my favorite films of 2006. Now the director of that film returns to his native Norway for this comedy about a train conductor forced into retirement but soon learns to enjoy his final days. It may be an arthouse version of The Bucket List.

But I agree with the rest of your list, lotta good stuff there. I would only add Bride Wars (hey....shut up).

Looks like O'Horten will be in my Top Ten now.

The second trimester should be coming soon (so should Chapter 1 of Decoy).

Post by Keyser Soze Fri Dec 12, 2008 10:41 pm

I'm not sure there are 10 movies in the first Trimester that I'll be seeing. If there are, it'll only be because Watchmen would be on the list multiple times.

1. Watchmen. Read it when it first came out and at least once a year since then. Have two original sketches by the aritst and owned a page of the original art until this past year.

2. Adventureland. It was filmed at the amusement park I've been going to since I was 10 years old.

3. Duplicity/The International. I've had a man crush on Clive Owen since Croupier

4. Monsters Vs. Aliens. What really needs to be said with a title like that.

5. I Love You Man. Assuming it doesn't get pushed back

6. Sunshine Cleaning. Sounds like a great premise

7. Coraline. Read the book when it first came out, and I would support anything Neil Gaiman is involved with

8 - 10 Watchmen, Watchmen, Watchmen!!!!!!!!

I can understand, Ghost Dog. You've got more to choose from and things don't get overshadowed, delayed or shelved (and you don't have a Harvey Weinstein fucking things up).

If I had to choose 10 films from the first trimester of the US calendar, here are the 10 I'd choose :

- Fanboys (but will it finally be released ?)
- New York I love You (there were some true gems in Paris I love You, I'm sure there'll be some in that one too)
- Youth in Revolt (Arteta + awesome cast)
- Watchmen (obviously)
- The Horsemen (very intriguing looking thriller with the gorgeous Zhang Ziyi and the solid Quaid
- Sunshine Cleaning (I'm afan of Steve Zahn, anything he's in...)
- I Love You Man (this looks funny as hell)
- Knowing (I've been waiting for this film for so many years, at last it arrives !!)
- This Side of the Truth (Ricky Gervais' directing debut !!)
- Adventureland (Mottola does not wait 10 more years for a new film, yes !)

I'm so-so on Naomi Watts, but Clive Owen is baller so I'll still see it. I feel this same way, though, about Duplicity. I can't stand Julia Roberts, but the movie still looks alright.
