It's funny, I know a lot of people have complained about the quality of movies this year. But I don't think its been that bad. My top 10 list consists entirely of movies which I have rated 8/10 or above, and movies such as Star Trek which also received an 8 and Inglorious Basterds which I gave a 7.5 didn't make my top 10. So all in all it hasn't been that bad. Some of the blockbusters have underwhelmed, but its been balanced by some excellent smaller movies.

I'm a massive Raimi fan and this ticked every box of what a classic Raimi movie should be. Absolutely brilliant, hilarious and terrifying throughout.

I agree completely! Such an awesome film. Everybody I mention this film to either haven't heard of it, or just ignored it amongst all the blockbuster hype, until I mention that it's basically Evil Day 4 (as in quality b-grade humour with legitimate scares), then they all want to see it. It's such a great movie, haven't laughed or been jumped like that in a movie in forever (and doing those two things seconds apart only made the movie that much better).

Check out Dead Snow if you can, a Norwegian movie which was played at the NZ International Film Fest . It is definitely in the Raimi genre of comedy horror. The whole audience laughed their asses off all the way through.

Surfer, you have to take 3 of those films out of consideration when we say that movies this year haven't been that great, because over here they came out last year, so we don't really count them. Just a thought.

Just watched it, and I agree with you on both counts. 8.5/10, was really great except for some moments which I assume had something to do with the many re-shoots. The Kevin Smith cameo was awesome as well. Very Happy

I'm not going by US release dates, I'm going by what I have seen in the cinema. In the same respect, I could probably ask a few of you to remove Taken because it was released last year in most countries other than the US.

Even then though, my favourite movies which have been released in the US this year are still a pretty sizeable number. Certainly more than last year anyway. I could add Star Trek, Inglorious Basterds, Broken Embraces, I Love You Man , Sunshine Cleaning and In The Loop without a hesitation, while I fully expect to be blown away by Moon and Ponyo when I get to see them. Not to mention the vast number of movies I am still very excited about which are still to be released this year too.

I would also point out the fact that, the majority of the films we collectively found to be excellent in 2008 came out in the 2nd half of the year. So my opinion is that the year has yet to shake out as far as quality goes.

I thought the same thing. I looked at my 2008 list again and in my top 12 (10's and 9's rated) there are exactly half (6) that came out in the last third of the year. Of those other six, I caught 4 of them on DVD later... So, at this point last year, the only films that I rated in the 9 or 10 catagory were The Dark Knight and Wall-E. With 6 9-10 rated films so far this year, I think its turning out decent, though I haven't found a 10 yet.
