July Pickem (HY #1/6)

Post by W on Mon Jun 22, 2009 4:42 pm

This is basically the same as all the other times except:

1. Everything above the line counts for both the July league total and the overall total.
2. Everything below the line is further out than when the July league ends and will only count towards the overall total.
3. I know I'm forgetting something. I'll let you know later. :)
4. Anything you want me to add, I'll think about it.

A. Overall T5 winner, Overall PTA winner, Highest IMDB for an opening each weekend

Quick question that could change one of my answers...are we considering Shutter Island a horror flick?

Re: July Pickem (HY #1/6)

Post by W on Tue Jun 23, 2009 3:52 pm

I have yet to see a trailer for it because of my slow connection (hopefully the Verizon people come out soon as I'm calling them in the morning). IMDB lists it as a Drama/Thriller, so my inclination is that Shutter Island doesn't count as a horror film. I'm really only looking for H2, Saw, Final Destination, The Road, etc films. Avatar doesn't count as "animated" either...

And as with every month, you can send in/edit your picks until the day the first film of the month comes out (in this case it is the 1st).

FYI: Don't forget those Oscar bait films for the IMDB top 250! There were five last year from July-December (Gran Torino, The Wrestler, Slumdog, Benjamin Button, Changeling). There were also 4 others from Jan-June (Wall-E, TDK, In Bruges, LTROI) but those wouldn't have counted, just trivia I guess. More trivia, there were only 3 the first half of this year (so far, I guess) which were Up, Star Trek, and The Hangover.

And I'm giving all of the predictions below the line until Feb 1 so they can get some wide-release time.

Its fine, you just can't edit/send in picks after the after the first film opens (the first). You have plenty of time. I don't usually get mine in until the last minute either.

I would have to say that if we are considering The Road as horror than Shutter Island would be considered horror as well...JMO though.

Well, then, maybe "The Road" shouldn't count. I just looked the genre up on IMDB and it lists it as Drama/Sci-Fi/Thriller. Sci-fi? What's sci about it? No aliens, no monsters, no futuristic technology... With all the darkness and things that go on, you'd think it'd be listed as Drama/Horror/Thriller...

Anyways, that'll be the rule for this one, if it says horror under "Genre" on its IMDB main page, then its in. So, The Road doesnt count either.

Also, Alvin and The Chipmunks shouldn't count as animation. Other than the Chipmunks, it's all live-action.

I feel the same way, but it has to count since we're using its IMDB main page as the source...
