Obama and Clinton (Mr. and Mrs.) make me want to puke (so does Bush Jr.). I like the bumper sticker that reads "If God wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates!"

Buscemi clearly knows everything about the world, because he's had such life experiences and such. Ya know, an 18 year old home schooled kid who does nothing but watch movies and surf the internet knows exactly how life was in the 50s, as well as why kids are getting pregnant at a rapid rate. Maybe if you actually stopped and looked at the world from outside of your own warped head, you'd realize that a simple little movie is not going to throw off the fabric of american society. You may think that movies are everything in the world, because it seems to be what consumes 95% of your time. But to 99.9% of the world, we actually think about the real world, and don't just put everything in our own fantasy land. Do you ever wonder why everyone else thinks that your ideas are bat shit insane, yet you still steadfastly stand by them? I know majority opinion doesn't always make things right, but why don't you ever just consider that you might be a little crazy to think that ellen page made every teen girl want a baby. Did Luke Skywalker make every teenage boy become an astronaut and kill aliens and use the force? Did The Dark Knight make everyone start dressing up like Batman and fighting crime? Does Grand Theft Auto make everyone in the world walk the streets killing people? I'm pretty sure that people have minds and use their life experiences to make their decisions more than what they saw in a film, but if you want to keep living in your own little fantasy land, be my guest.

That's a bad example because although I didn't become an astronaut, I sure would like to use the force powers to choke the shit out of people like Darth Vader does. Smile

But I am a bit bat shit crazy myself. hahaha

Did you not watch the movie? The whole point of playing the harmonica was to use it as a sort of calling card for his revenge plan, a symbol of what Frank did to him and his brother.

I'm no fan of Bronson either but for me Once Upon a Time in the West is hands down the greatest western I've ever seen. Maybe because it's the western to end all westerns, as Leone claimed (despite making another a few years later!). MY problem with a lot of westerns is the same with a lot of action films: you just don't care about the protagonists. Even The Good the Bad and the Ugly feels over-rated to me, a good film but far from great, overlong and slightly hollow. But Once Upon a Time... is brimming with great characters, Jill who becomes the future of the USA, Cheyenne the bandit who laughs in the face of his fate as part of a dying breed. Hell, even the crippled money-man gives us a glimpse of his hope and dreams before his pathetic fate. You rarely see characters as rich as this in a western.

Re: what are you watching RIGHT NOW.... or somewheres about close to "right now" PART 2

Post by Keyser Soze on Wed Aug 19, 2009 5:28 am

Every now and then I get reminded of why I don't mention this site to too many "outside world" folks. "So, what are you movie guys talking about today?" "Well, we're having a dual discussion on the merits of sterilizing humans and the quality of Once Upon a Time in the West"

To tackle the first subject, let me try and add ther perspective of someone who has been alive long enough to see some of the changes in the societal aspects of divorce (Also having been through one myself). There clearly were not as many divorces back in the 50's as there are today, and that was for a couple of reasons: 1. The cost - Divorce was a costly expense back then which is why the majority of folks that were having divorces were wealthy. Middle and lower income folks stayed together. 2. The stigma - There was a bad social stigma attached to being a divorcee especially for a female. 3. The Children. Back in the day, parents, regardless of how miserable they were, stayed together "For the kids"

With the arrival of the 60's, people started to become more and more independant feeling that they did not have to have a partner to be complete. Add this to a change in the divorce laws in the 70's in many states to "No fault divorce", and the divorce rate began to climb. For those of you that do not know what that is, no fault divorce basically means that you do not have to have a reason to get divorced. You don't have to catch the other person cheating, or prove that they have been abusing you. You just have to go into court and file for divorce, and there is nothing that the other person can do to stop it. It can happen as qucickly as 90 days or as long as 3 years. Basically, the two of you can have a fight over what you had for dinner last night, and one of you can go into a court tomorrow and file divorce papers. You can then put down the wonderful term of "Irreconcilable Differences" as your reason, and the wheels have been put in motion. The divorce can be final on the 90th day if the other person signs the papers, or it will happen on the 3rd anniversary of your filing whether they sign or not.

When I was originally trying to save my first marriage, I was very bitter about the fact that it was that easy to get divorced, but now that time has passed, I realize that too many people would not be able to get ouf bad marriages if it was made to be harder to get one.

And anyone out there who actually thinks that more kids are going to go out and get pregnant because othe movie Juno really needs to have their head examined. You sound no different than the folks that had Warner Brothers cartoons pulled off the network because little kids were going to think it was okay to do all of the things the Coyote did and not get hurt. Guess what? We watched all of those cartoons, and not only did I never strap a rocket powered jet pack to my back, I was pretty sure if I fell off that cliff, I wasn't going to get up and walk away from it (I would have hit that little river that Wile E always seemed to miss).

My ex sister-in-law used to have the best theory on having children. She used to always tell me that we should sterilize all children at age 13, and then you should have to pass a test to get it undone. She would say, "Hell, you have to pass a test to drive a car, fly a plane, you have get a license to get married, but any nitwit can bring a life into this world"

Thirdly - Once Upon a Time in the West is the best fucking Western ever made. No questions, no discussions, End of Story!!!!

Well, I'd say the majority of people aren't influenced heavily by movies. But some people still are, you can't discount the few copycat Joker crimes that happened after The Dark Knight came out, for instance.

But anyway, are any of you guys trying to get tickets for Avatar Day?

I imagine that they will run the trailer before Inglourious Basterds so I will see it then.

Yeah, I think it will be on Inglourious Basterds (as will the first Inception teaser!).

But - IMAX 3D!

The nearest IMAX 3-D theatre is three hours from me. So I'll have to settle for the regular 2-D.

It might also be with X Games 3-D but I have no interest in paying $9.50 to see a movie about the X Games (unless it's that one they did for IMAX).

I just found out that Avatar Day will not be showing a trailer, it'll be the entire first reel of the movie.

That would be tough to follow for a normal non-movie geek wouldn't it?

I have said the EXACT same thing. (not sure if that is a good thing or not but whatever right?!) In fact I think Becs and I had this discussion some time ago also on The Site That Shall Not Be Named. Sterilize before puberty and then get a license to be fertile when you prove you are worth the oxygen and your genes are not defective. Bicycle and motorcycle helmets, seat belts, gun safeties, guard rails, life vests, etc are all safety measures that keeps nature from dwindling down the weak and unfit. LOL So they get to propagate their genes and make the species weaker as a whole. Lions eat the weak and the young bulls, not the strong fast smart ones. The strong fast smart ones then survive and breed. This keeps the herd strong and balanced. Humanity has no predators other than our natural stupidity (See: Guns, Bungee Jumping, Racing Vehicles, Talking on the Cell while Driving and Drinking a Latte or the standard Drunk Driving) so our stupid keep breeding.

Keyser Soze wrote:Thirdly - Once Upon a Time in the West is the best fucking Western ever made. No questions, no discussions, End of Story!!!!

Agreed. Best Western Ever.
